10/7/2004: Kerry's Vanished Draft Proposal

The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine is a wonderful tool; 30 billion web pages archived from 1996 to a few months ago.

Here’s what John Kerry’s web site says today about his proposal to enlist 200,000 young Americans for “national service:” John Kerry for President - National Service.

Engage 200,000 Americans A Year In “Service For College”

John Kerry and John Edwards will offer a simple deal to hundreds of thousands of America’s young people: if you will serve for two years in one of America’s toughest and most important jobs, we will cover four years of tuition at a typical public university.

And here is the Wayback Machine’s cache of John Kerry’s web site from earlier this year, outlining a mandatory service plan for high school students: John Kerry for President - A New Era of National Service. (Hat tip: Matt.)

As President, John Kerry will have the courage to lead and call on all Americans to make our nation stronger. Whether it is protecting America from the threats of terrorism or addressing the problems we have at home, America’s new challenges will not be met by the same old answers of big government or big tax cuts for the wealthy. John Kerry will call on all Americans - tapping into the idealism and ingenuity of Americans and putting it to work on building a safer, stronger, and more secure nation. Americans already make an enormous difference in their communities, volunteering, in Boys and Girls Clubs or homeless shelters. Many Americans do full time service. John Kerry believes that in these times, we need to bolster these efforts with a nationwide commitment to national service. Whether it is a Summer of Service for our teenagers, helping young people serve their country in return for college, or the Older Americans in Service program, John Kerry’s plan will call on every American of every age and every background to serve. John Kerry will set a goal of one million Americans a year in national service within the next decade.

John Kerry Outlines Plan to Require Service for High School Students

Part of 100 days Plan to Enlist One Million Americans in National Service A Year

On September 11th, 2001, America experienced the most terrible and deadly attack in its history. John Kerry believes we need to think big and do better and get more young Americans serving the nation.

As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.

This has been posted around the net.

The current text comes from http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/national_service/

Strange I can't find a record of the url of the earlier 'draft plan' anywhere. archive.org doesn't have a cache of http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/national_service/, so I guess it must have been somewhere else...

i don't know if i should just leave this as unanswered, which is entirely what it deserves, or point out that this just links to a right wing blog which links to a page that doesnt exist on the wayback machine.

bunch of other right wing bloggers say it doesnt matter that the 'original' isnt there, because he's mentioned it in a bunch of his early speeches, and then they take a speech extract and embolden the words "community service" as proof

redfez also posted that fake 'yes, bush can' article here. so i dont know about his political affiliations, but he seems to like posting fake political 'news' on messageboards.

Maybe he doesn't realise. Bless!

I hate the way "volunteerism" is used as a band-aid for social problems that are at the root problems of economic inequality. I would rather have national health care than a teenage volunteer dishing grits to the homeless.

planting trees != military service

i find this thread's existence quite sad and pathetic.

Mitch, mitch, mitch... coincidentally, that rhymes with "bitch, bitch, bitch."

The title of this post WAS:

"Kerry's cached DRAFT PLAN!??!?! (with an arrow pointing to the left) this is bullshit, right?"

However, the little arrow did not show up because it contained an HTML bracket.

Let's see if it will show up in a post:

I stand corrected. There *is* a cached page on johnkerry.com with the above text.

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/natservice/

Sometime between February and April, the '100 days plan' bit was dropped (unless it's in that non-archived pdf):

However, as others have pointed out, nowhere is mandatory military service mentioned.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago)

nope.

Let me try again using the preformat tag....

redfez, Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago)

ILX doesn't like the chevrons being used, redfez. You have to dig out the html codes for them if you really need to use them.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Alba.

Anyway, the ?!?!?! in the title doesn't necessarily imply that I think it is bullshit, so I understand how you would be ruffled, mitch. In the future, I'll make sure not to create any more arrows using HTML brackets.

redfez, Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

REDfez: don't remember you reappearing on the other thread, so i wrongly assumed you were spamming boards with this kinda stuff. i may well have left that thread before you returned, i admit. i thought the multiple exclamation points and question marks in the title were just typical LOOK HERE net troll tactics, not an embedded critique. coupled with the absence of the little arrow and its accompanying text, i think my position is not only understandable, but somewhat justified. apologies, nonetheless, i suppose.

so this is very slightly more 'valid' than i thought. eh.

xxxxxpost. no hard feelings, fez.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

i am on edge today.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

No problem, I kind of like it when people get nasty, anyway. I don't take it personally and I think it's kind of funny. Honestly, I just figure someone here knows the answer to this stuff, so that is the only reason I bring it to everyone's attention. I would be very surprised if I actually brought ground-breaking news to ILX.

As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.

This is very badly worded. It's obviously stupid to have the words 'mandatory' and 'national service' in the same sentence. No wonder it was dropped.
