Saw one from somewhere in which a large-muscled lovable-lug-type black man shaves with a particular sort of razor, puts on a suit and tie, picks up his briefcase, walks into the bedroom of his very young, sleeping daughter, puts his cheek against hers, and gives her a kiss. She says: "Bye, mom."

Adam and Joe are on the Virgin mobile advert! However I don't particularly like the rest of the Virgin brand (my god, another one for the worst advert thread: their post office thing!) so hrmph chiz. I also admit to larffing at the Post Office thread with Elton John getting some PUPPIES in brown wrapping paper oh whot joy! I also like the advert for the Winnie the Pooh sleep soother and think more adverts should be shot from a babies eye point of view eg the Pampers ad. Also, who can forget the classic I'M A BIG KID LOOK WHAT I CAN DO! I CAN WEAR BIG KIDS PANTS TOO! tra la la Huggies pullups, I was almost tempted to get a pair myself.

Does '..of the moment' preclude the Guiness adverts? I'll nominate 'Surfer' anyway. I know its the obvious choice (No. 1 of all time etc) but it is great. Jonathan Glazer said he made a whole feature film on only slightly more money than that 30-second ad cost! I also read a Creative Review article on how it was made and it was awe-inspiring. The work that went into it...

The curent trend to have several subtly different versions of the same ad (Nivea, the one where the bloke sings "Can't take my eyes off you" down the phone and wakes up with a donkey in his room, etc.) - classic or dud? Sort of classic, but they could do so much more with it. Looking forward to seeing it done really well.

The best Guiness ad is the dreaming competition. It reminds me of my grandad who was 90 this year. He can't see a fig anymore, yet he still has the best dreams evah. um, and also the timeless Garden Claw- although said Claw is actually rendered useless now, because MiniClaw is best for potted plants (and clawing people's faces off), and the Garden Claw Gold is adjustable, for the taller or shorter gardener. I guess GC original is for the skanks who can't afford an adjustable claw. Hmm.

Oh, and that Steam Clean one (can't remember the actual product) where the glass is so clean Mr Moustachio Man walks into the door when he forgets his briefcase, oh the hilarity. It's not just for glass, though, it can be used on ovens, kitchen surfaces etc, it's great. No really it is.

Surfer ad = greatly hated by me, I think largely becuz of "the fat-hearted drummer hit the beat with all his might" etc, which inflames the anti-hornby in me for some reason, and say YAY for mathematicians w.drum machines etc etc

Ad I quite like has two cartoon tots eating "junk" straight from a rubbish bin, then they stop and have some hovis.

there's another one for boot's cosmetics that rips off a bjork video something rotten but still manages to be entertaining. again, good choice of music and clever visuals and no real hard sell.

Advanced Hair Studio! A bizarre and extremely long infomercial which only ever appears in the wee hours of the morning, presumably to target some kind of demographic of balding insomniacs. Various sporting stars of yesteryear extoll the virtues of a dubious-looking hair regrowth process. My favourite is the guy who demonstrates the strength of his "new" hair by doing lots of vigorous sporty things like heading a football, sailing a yacht etc, and at one point letting a guy grab hold of his fringe and yank it in a truly wince-inducing way.

You know, I still like the Harvey Keitel "Direct Line" Mr Wolf ads, but he come over too avuncular to be truly threatening when he says "It's time to put you to sleep", just before he produces a flask of cocoa.

Maybe for the next ad phase, they should get Javier Vardim to recreate his character from "No country for old men", then the bods looking for cheaper insurance would look genuinely terrified when he said "hmm, heads or tails?"
