Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 4 November 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Nice one. I ordered it and am waiting for delivery.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 4 November 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I am being good and waiting for Christmas when I can waste my time in a far more guilt-free manner.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 4 November 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

it's very good so far, I was a little unsure of the new interface from the demo, but after a couple of hours it gets very uintuitive, also the searches are much better than the demo promised. Ajax are really good in it too, apart from a paucity of decent strikers.

also - player pictures!!!

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 5 November 2004 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Woah! What kind of visuals are there during the games? Still from-above 2-D blobs? What are cool new things you can do? Does it maie you want to make more effort with tactics and stuff, or just (what I normally do) buy and sell players, use thye same formation all the time and just let it roll?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

ha ha the Soccer AM badgers are a team in it, complete with mugshots.

Players have "preferred moves" which they will try and pull off more, only to be seen in the editor though.

The 2-d engine is a lot clearer too, and passes seem more like what they would be really, with better passers of teh ball playing clever through balls etc.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Smashing! How much have you played it so far? Any tips (not hints or anything, or decent players, as I doubt you've started your game in the Conf South)? I am starting tonight, as the Dons (obviously).

Oh, and is there any point using the editor before I start, other than perhaps to insert myself as AFCW's midfield general? Can you use the editor when you're aleady in a game?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't think so, I'm steering clear for now as it's a slippery slope once you get into the editing I had most of my chums in my last one I played with Chesterfield (who were also playing at "New Saltergate" - an all seater covered bowl which holds 30k)

I signed a very good forward from Brazil (playing as Ajax- my favourite footie manager team) for one mil - alfons alves or summat - 4 goals in season opener!

I may start a lower league game too.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Okay, so, are there any other people playing this who've just been keeping quiet up till now?

I need some help. I know that, using the editor, I can swap AFC Wimbledon into the Conference South (they are not available to manage when you start the game). But I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it.

Has anyone managed to do this, or can anyone figure it out for me? I'm stumped and frustrated as I want to start a new game as the Super Dons but I can't, boo.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:47 (twenty years ago)

haha, what Chris didn't tell you was that he tried to use the editor and managed to waste two hours of his life, cos it didn't work. (though of course it was a useful two hours cos he learnt about the editor as he wplayed around with it, of course...)

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:43 (twenty years ago)

in what way didn't it work? I did manage to successfully create a player (myself, with superpowers obv), but not swap the teams around which was urgent & key. What was Chris trying to do?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:52 (twenty years ago)

no idea, I just know he was in a bad mood when I got in, and that was why!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Hmph. Get him on this thread and we can talk about it!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:55 (twenty years ago)

his line manager is keen to let him know that just cos he's handed in his notice it doesn't mean he can wind down, and has thrown loads of work at him, so don't expect him too soon.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:06 (twenty years ago)

hello

yes, I was asked to save the db when I finished, and as server.db existed already I saved it as server2, d'oh (I realise now that the backup will be called something different) and so when I went back to load it, it fell over. So I re-installed. Fortunately I didn't lose my saved games

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:22 (twenty years ago)

couldn't you go back, rename it server.db re-writing the existing one, and all your changes will be there?

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:28 (twenty years ago)

possibly, I was thinking about that on the way in this mroning (I had finished my magazine)

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, it's not as intuitive as I'd like, it seems. I'll have another fiddle tonight. But Chris, if you can figure out how to swap teams I'd love to know how you do it!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago)

So. My game crashes on the 30th November 2004. The editor crashes before I can even open a database, so I can't even start a new game if I want to be the Dons. What a load of fucking shit.

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Sunday, 21 November 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago)

life is so rubbish.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 21 November 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Chirs and others - I offered to do an update for SI of the AFCW squad to include in the new patch, but it's occurred to me that on the 1st July 2004 (the day the game begins), we hadn't signed a couple of players who were were going to sign a few weeks later who aren't in the game database at all but who, in real life, are fucking great. Similarly, we've let go 5 or 6 players this season who were still there on 1st July.

What do you think I should do?

He's allergic to lettuce (Mark C), Friday, 26 November 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago)

well, you can do players with future transfer deals, so set them up and have them going in or out on the set date that it actually happened, should be quite easy, I did it in 03/04 and it worked fine. I'll give you a hand with it if you want.

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

That's kind of you - can you go to the SI forums and check my post, see if there's anything else you'd suggest? I can try and find out more about the incomplete entries - as for the attributes etc., I'm not quite sure what to do!

Anally retentive stats weirdo (Mark C), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I can do this all myself on my game (when the patch is released), but it might be nice for the game-makers to have up to date info.

He's allergic to lettuce (Mark C), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:29 (twenty years ago)

attributes is a personal judgement thing, basically look at what they call the generic ratings - 15s all round is considered premiership, so technically you shouldn't be giving yr players many 15s (maybe you have a super speedy winger so could give him pace and accelaration that high, but if his first touch/control were as good as a 15 then he'd be playing at a higher level, so you're looking around the 8/10 mark at most for them)

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 26 November 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

True enough. My better players have maybe 6 or 7 attributes in double figures. What would make me really sad is if godlike midfield genius Rob Ursell was only given generic conf south stats. We're still waiting to hear (IRL) if Chester are going to sign him after his trial :(
