My proposal for healing America - Heartland tourism!

Seriously dudes,

anyone planning their vacation should consider Missouri or Kansas as a destination! Go, spend your tourist money, don't be a dick, talk to people, build relationships, learn about America and help the ailing farmland/post-industrail economic infrastructure.

Sounds good, right?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Why not Utah?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Utah's actually pretty damned beautiful, well worth anyone's time for a trip.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I know! I'm not kidding!

I love Wyoming too! and I hear Montana is amazing!

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

U-U-U-UTAH SAINTS

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

In all seriousness, I am really sick of the default mode of Heartland-hating that seems so prevalent on both coasts. I just finished working for a jury consultancy that practiced nationwide and I got sick of tjeir patronizing attitude to people every time we had a mock trial in Oklahoma or Missouri.

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I am a red-state tourister! The Carolinas have the warmest, kindest people I have ever met, easy. I wanna go to Thomaston, GA after I graduate.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Yes! The Carolinas, Utah and Georgia are great! I need to get to some of the Southwest red states too! I hope this will happen soon!

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago)

and have hott gay sex with all the ppl you meet

H (Heruy), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago)

st louis is an ultrablue city in a red state but you're still welcome to sleep in the spare room.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Is that where that big arch is? Cool!

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago)

come to kentucky! fall is our prettiest season! you can see some very interesting caves. and drink lots of bourbon.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:20 (twenty years ago)

GIT TH' HELL OFF MY PROP'TY

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I live ten blocks from the arch! maybe I will go there today and give it a hug.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I am really sick of the default mode of Heartland-hating that seems so prevalent on both coasts

I'm more than ready to love the Heartland. I'm sick of how they vote and double standards about who gets to hate.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I guess I should have been more specific and said the rural heartland.

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

I've been to North Carolina. It was very nice indeed. But so were the other states I went to, mostly blue, I think.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Is everyone in GA insane cute, or is that just an okcupid illusion? (teenypresence = stike one for the yeavote obv)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm more than ready to love the rural heartland. I certainly like how it looks.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Suzy won't let me take her to Nebraska.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I love Nebraska! I was in the most amazing storm there once!

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Heck yeah. Come to St. Louis. Especially you touring bands.

mike a, Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

okay, that it is it! i am really tired of the "everyone in the south/midwest is stupid/conservative/religious nut. there are plenty of people in the heartland who are-shock-not bigots. bush didn't win those red states with 100% of the vote. for example, ky went about 60%/40%. that is only %9 more than the national average. so lay off. it is hard enough to be in the minority of liberal voters in these states, you all pretending that we don't exist makes it worse.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:30 (twenty years ago)

With Bush out of office, could Texas go blue? I'd happily volunteer for that duty -- never been there, so it looms large in my mythology.

briania (briania), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

But that is what I am saying.

xpost

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Emily OTM; go to CNN.com and look at the county breakdowns.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Texas is great. Definitely worth a visit. There's no chance, however, that it will go blue any time soon.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Well, Ann Richards' governorship wasn't so very long ago, there are several major metropolitan areas, huge hispanic vote, and at least the remnants of the old LBJ machine -- get Willie and ZZ Top on board and there's got to be at least some kind of shot, right?

briania (briania), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

No amount of visits from the coasts (which would be viewed as condescending by a lot of mid-Westerners/Southerners) are gonna change things here, adam.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I think Democrats ought to stop assuming "minorty = votes for us!" otherwise things like the betrayed shock reaction to this election are just going to keep happening.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I'm being too pessimistic, but I just can't imagine it happening unless the democrat were almost indistinguishable from the average Texas republican.

x-post

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I see that it could be read as condescending, I was thinking of that (equally stupid) thread about non-Americans boycotting the US, actually.

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago)

And Dan's right. The hispanic vote in Texas is perceived as "up for grabs" by the republican party.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago)

In other words, I meant international tourism. And I was also being kinda silly.

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I don't think any constituency can be assumed in this era.

briania (briania), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

check out the lady elected sherrif in dallas

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

and have hott gay sex with all the ppl you meet

In public, even if you aren't gay.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

"tourism" isn't going to help anything. If we want to change the attitudes in these areas, we have to move there.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

oops. not sure what the hell happened to that link. anyway, apparently she was not only hispanic, but also a democrat and a lesbian. dallas seems to be progressing. i think the article said that she was the first democrat since 1970 or so.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps we could usher in some sort of anti-urban movement for this generation? or is that a bit...you know?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

That's not gonna help either. Living in St Louis was an eye-opener.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

(Alex, did you get my email?)

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Woops, I just did.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

come to kentucky! fall is our prettiest season! you can see some very interesting caves. and drink lots of bourbon.

Yay! Actually I'm strongly thinking about visiting Kentucky for the Derby next May if y'all wanna put up with me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

See, and I even went and did this, but it was the Canadian heartland. It was great.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Um, I like the blue heartland just fine. You know, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, where I spend most of the time.

I am planning on going to Kansas City for a weekend, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 November 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

It's a nice idea, but I think it's unlikely to happen on account of them all voting for GWB.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Thursday, 4 November 2004 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps we could usher in some sort of anti-urban movement for this generation? or is that a bit...you know?

oddly just last night I was thinking that perhaps the next big organized leftist movement would be to encourage urban liberals to relocate to rural areas in the hope of "seeding" areas and hoping for a "domino effect". but I also may have had a fever. I don't see how this would really work; lots of liberals did move to rural areas of Colorado in the 70's to raise their kids in hippie, back-to-nature settings, and it doesn't seem to have massively changed the attitude there.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 4 November 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Haha well last night I was arguing with my friends that what was needed now was a profoundly radical anti-capitalist neo-socialist offshoot of Christianity a la Rastafarianism. Given the rapid third-worldization of the US though, it somehow doesn't seem as crazy now as I would thought an idea I had while drunk would have.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 4 November 2004 18:09 (twenty years ago)

The hit NBC sit-com of 2005!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 November 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago)

"Scrapple?"

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 4 November 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Scrapple.

"a slice of fried pork-mush"

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 November 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

ned-that would be great! maybe you could see a fight between chris rock and anna nicole smith like there was at the last derby!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 4 November 2004 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Wowzer!
