Public farewell for DJ John Peel

I'm tempted to travel down to pay my respects. But I never knew the guy other than through his broadcasts, it's too far and most importantly, after a crap week I doubt I could cope.

It's a lovely place. Plus you get a chance to visit Britain's smallest pub.

I imagine his family might show up

I considered it, but I can't take another day off work at the moment. I wouldn't worry that you never knew him - it's open to anyone.

Just remembered that Paul Foot died not that long ago too - really has been a bad year all round!

i went in the end

Played Roy Orbison ('running scared') and Wolfman Jack ('going down slow') as part of the service. Two hymns ('lord of all hopefullness' and 'abide with me'), a couple of pieces by Sheila's choral society. gambo waffled on two long, brother alan was touching, the childrens' piece had everybody laughing, very nearly held it together until the very end when his theme music played, followed by him answering a couple of interview questions (the one about how he can't think of anything that'd make his life better). and then, the killer. the Kop choir singing 'you'll never walk alone' straight into 'Teenage Kicks'.

got to ipswich about an hour afterwards and the local papers already had pictures of the funeral in there (which is impressive).

I thought Britain's smallest pub was in Southport? Or maybe it just says it is.

There is a pub in Bury St Edmunds that is just a bar with a bit of space round it. It claims to be the smallest.

I'm glad it was a nice day.

We were in wagamamas last night, and I was telling Chris about the funeral (having looked at the photos etc. online at work) and I got more upset than when I first heard about his death. Anyone watching us must have wondered what the hell we were talking about, cos I ended up tearing up, and having to search for a tissue.

I was very surprised when Mr Miller informed us today that radio 4 are continuing with Home Truths. It's not that great a formula, it was John that made it what it was.
