Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Friday, 5 November 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i prefer canada's weather (logically enough, given my nom d'ILXor not to mention the fact that i HATE heat), i speak english and can brush up on my french to make it passable. on the other hand, i prefer mexican food, aztecs and mayas were cooler than the cree and the huron, and every mexican i've ever gotten to know well has been 100% cool (while i've known a few canadian asshats).

a dilemma!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

not to mention that if i ran the world, i'd give TX, NM, CO, AZ, and NV BACK to mexico (we keep CA, though) -- if they're still pissed off about 1848, they can have 'em (and the headaches those states cause the rest of the country).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Eisbär, I pray to God you never ever have even remotely the capacity to run the world. Seeing that Texas is slowly but eventually moving toward a path where it will rejoin at least the northern half of Mexico is my worst fucking nightmare come true and if Texas were to become even a satellite region of Mexico I would very sadly make the preparations to leave the state that has been my home for so very long.

Please. Mexico is a fucking nightmare. Every single police officer is corrupt. The government is a disaster. The military and paramilitary committs as many kidnappings and other similar crimes as do the "common thug". Everything seems covered in a thin layer of dust and soot. My grandparents worked fucking hard to settle and become citizens in the United States, so their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren could have more of an opportunity for a better life than they'd have had had our family stayed in Mexico. I am not fucking giving up my fucking U.S. fucking citizenship because that would be a fucking HUGE step backwards. Do NOT wish the worst of nightmares for either Texas or New Mexico or Colorado or Arizona or Nevada or any other fucking state in the fucking United States.

Oh, and Eisbär? Fuck you for thinking of us as only "headaches" for "the rest of the country". Fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you FUCK YOU.

Accept No Substitutes (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

*sighs* Okay. Passion time over. Breathing in and out and re-reading. I'm still not returning back the sentiments of most of what I have said, though obv the last bit is a bit on the harsh side (understatement? yeah, think so), so will be returning THAT bit. Really, though. Do you think that EVERYONE in every single one of those states is your fucking enemy? Do you think every single one of those people just LIVE to cause you aggravation? NO THEY DON'T.

Accept No Substitutes (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in Texas and I'm all for giving us back to Mexico.

I'd choose Canada because I speak English and a tiny bit of French, I've put up with heat for long enough (according to the Peters Projection map, I'm parallel with Algeria!) and I hate Mexican food.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

but Mexico would be way cheaper and maybe the weather isn't so bad (read:hot) in some coastal regions or the mountains

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Dee, your passion is great. indeed, this map is one of the few things giving me hope today.

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Milo, you don't know what kind of drastic step back that move would be, though. You don't know about the struggle undertaken by everyone who emigrated here from Mexico because they wanted to escape that nightmare. You can't even begin to understand what it'd be like to see this place that was considered a comparable Paradise to what was across the Rio Grande. You can't see how disastrous it would all be. Really... oh shit, I'm actually sobbing right now, I'm that upset.

Mexico represents total and complete failure. It's a nothing, a big black slate of ugliness and despair. To even *think* about the place I've called home for almost all my life becoming a part of all of that is... well, I'm already mourning that day. I'm American, damn it! I will DIE an American! I would kill myself if even there were rumors of a proposed rejoining with Mexico. I would seriously go down to a gun store, purchase a gun and some ammunition, and shoot myself in the head. I am so very serious about that. And I would kill my mother too, to save her from the nightmare of having to see our home take that giant step backwards.

Accept No Substitutes (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 5 November 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Kingfish, thanks for posting that map. I recognized my county immediately and saw that it was accurately depicted as being half for Bush and half for Kerry, which was already reported in the local news media. I see that Travis County (which is the home of Austin) went almost all for Kerry, but I'm wondering which county in North Texas also almost went completely all for Kerry, as well. It looks to me like it's pretty close to the DFW metroplex. I wonder which area that is.

And... yeah, all the border area either went all or half for Kerry. Which was expected, pretty much, even in Del Rio, which is a fairly prosperous community (due in part to the military presence there).

Accept No Substitutes (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 5 November 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

hint: i can't go a week without a burrito

You are a wise and good man. (And rah for Dee, cause all the dumping on the 'bad' states has been a crock.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 November 2004 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Except for Utah.

Kenan (kenan), Friday, 5 November 2004 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(Breathing again some more, getting more energy into the old brain, realizing just how terrible saying "Fuck you" to ANYONE here is, taking that back, etc., etc., etc.)

(Thanks Ned. You are being WAY too kind here, I think.)

Anyway. Really, though. Don't discount anyone at all. I mean, if I could explain to you all the thoughts and ideas that have been going through my head over the past week or so, because of the thoughts and ideas I had to process in order to decide whom to vote for in the presidential race, you could see just how much of a personal political revolution has gone on inside me in just that one week. Because of this election race, I feel like many of my ideas and beliefs have changed, so much so that I am in fact crossing off Al Franken from my personal "irritants" list and have started to truly LISTEN to the angry criticisms longtime Bush detractors have hurled against our president, something I never imagined I'd do when I was being a huge Bush apologist and supporter. I still support Bush in certain areas and decisions, but am now willing to see him go down because of those very same decisions. (The Iraq war is a very good example of this.)

If it can happen to me, it can happen to SO MANY others out there.

Accept No Substitutes (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 5 November 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Dee about not returning Texas to Mexico. After all, I like Mexico.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 November 2004 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go to Canada. Heck, It's a three minute walk from here.

I think they have their act together as a nation. Plus it's where the hockey gods live. It's Olympia in that respect.

I'm not too sure you can get poutine in Mexico.

Speaking of Bush: Is it just me or did he actually sound relaxed during today's press conference? I only caught the first half.

Many friends/family have urged Canada as the choice destination. (I'm not going anywhere. I'm gonna stay and fight). But Mexico is more appealing because: I hate being cold and I like to sleep (siesta!).
All above posts from Accept No Substitutes are very moving and illustrate a perspective we, or I, don't always give much thought to. Thanks for being passionate and expressing, emotionally, some conflicting things that have been going on for you.
