VADER!

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 5 November 2004 10:57 (twenty years ago)

i wanted to be excited by that :-(

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:40 (twenty years ago)

its some what exciting.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:42 (twenty years ago)

trailer for part I, fantastic, actual film rubbish. so maybe it's a good sign. i was hoping to see a "partial" vader, but perhaps they are keeping back that visual for later for full promo impact.

i'll still see the bluddy thing

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago)

i'm very excited.

i think it reveals too much though; i'd rather know nothing at all by the time i walk into the cinema than have my appetite severly dampened by trailers. yoda fighting again? a (quite long) shot of the 'new' vader suit? shots of both kashyyk and the lavapits? way too much information. i would have preferred a teaser.

ave satani (lemike), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:47 (twenty years ago)

you do see a partial vader, that scary dude at the end who looks like the emperor...its vader.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 5 November 2004 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Mirrors

some screen grabs here

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 5 November 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago)

no Boba Fett?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 5 November 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago)

You can't really see it in this shot, but this thing looke halfway between a naboo fighter and a TIE fighter. Ooooh.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 5 November 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Ah well. The battle scenes on Coruscant should be good. Are the Kashyyk bits gonna be like the Endor bits in RotJ but taller?

robster (robster), Friday, 5 November 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago)

What, I just got up. Is this ESPN Classic?

Oh, shit.

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 November 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

is it just me or is there a shot in there of a smaller ship SPRAYING WATER onto a larger ship to TRY AND PUT OUT A FIRE?

STAR WARS: LADDER 49

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 November 2004 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Watch out for the backdraft, dude.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 November 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Darth Vader no longer looks scary, he is way too 1977 with those big goofy buttons on his chestplate. I wondered, as a child, what the hell those buttons were for, it may have been overoptimistic to expect my parents would have a definitive answer. Also Hayden Christiansen with big goofy eviltastic colored contacts in his eyes is totally silly looking, was it not considered at any point that he's WAY TOO EFFETE to be frightening in the least?

Ornaldo Bloomps could kick his ass FCOL.

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 November 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago)

hopefully at least this one won't have 45 minutes of heartbreaking midget group hugs for an epilogue

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 5 November 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

I saw this trailer last night at the movies when I was there for The Incredibles (which is grebt, btw). It is incredibly goofy, but I did like the wookies.

*jealous*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 November 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago)

It's too bad that Lucas has by now completely beaten down any interest I had in his movies, since it looks like this will probably be the best one of the prequels.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 November 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago)

LUCAS HAD DONE IT THIS TIME
HE CREATES THE BIGGEST SW MOVIE EVER

This is incredible

-ANakin or should i say Darth Vader and his eyes

Date Posted: 10/10/03 2:52pm Subject: RE: The Droid General-Who is he, and how signifigant is he to episode 3?!

White and yellow lightsaber blades?? Lucas has said that there are only Red, Blue and Green lightsabers and made an exception in Sam Jackson's case. It doesn't make much sense to suddenly create two new colors for the last movie of a 6 part story.

Plus, we're in the early phase of post production. The colors probably haven't been determined yet. AND they could change his colors 20 different times between now and May 2005.

I'm all for every color of the rainbow as a blade, but I just don't see it happening.

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 November 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Where are you getting this stuff from? It is comedy gold.

OMG

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I reckon Boba Fett will be taken in by one of the Hutt's, and we'll see him learning the ways of evil.

but it looks like old Anakin and that Android sith bloke will off all the Jedi's.

Episode 2 should have been a road movie, about the drunken adventures of obi-kwon and anakin.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, but Hayden/Bradon from the Amazing Race has always been a bit Queer Eye for the Jedi.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 5 November 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago)

"obianikdart" has made my fucking day about 3 times so far:

"I agree that the eyes will only be in the trailer version.. You can't go from yellow eyes to blue eyes when he fights obiwan. "

Uh no the eyes are in the movie , Sidious has to have them normal and then when hes swinging the blade his eyes are differnt colors the same yellow as anakin .

he just cleaned up the conference room when Obi Wan walks in , STOP saying that its not in the movie becasue it is .
HIS EYES ARE YELLOW AND WILL BE IN THE MOVIE .

TOMBOT, Friday, 5 November 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago)

In that he keeps his parents IN the basement, I agree. They must be aging well enough down there.

TAHTS WON THING I NEVER GET ABIT STAR WARS -- NOONE NEVER GOS TO THE TOILET??????!?!?!!?!?????????

Actually when I was a kid I assumed that Darth Vader's little clam-shaped solitude chamber was a sci-fi restroom where he could take vicious dark side craps of evil. A friend of mine had the toy and I used to close it on Darth and start making fart sounds with my hands.

If Yoda actually farts in this movie, I'll assume that I was actually correct all these years.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I just watched the trailer, and I don't see how anyone could still find some senitmental magic in this franchise. All my childhood appreciation has been lost forever. TOMBOT otm re: Vader having no ominous presence whatsoever.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Surpressing the pee and the poo = jedi mind trick.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:48 (twenty years ago)

So with all that Sith business, I can forgive Yoda for a temporary lapse.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I think there would have been more enthusiasm if Dark Helmet had appeared. I have to assume theaters would respond more enthusiastically to a SPACEBALLS: REVENGE OF THE SILLY trailer. I know I would.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying it would do better moneywise, just the trailer.

thirteen years pass...

rewatched ROTS again. the only prequel I like, despite its flaws. I still have problems with Anakin's move to the dark side.

For all intents and purposes, it should have begun with his genocide of the Tusken Raiders in AOTC, but Lucas papered over that and Padme was all like "oh snookums, it's ok, we all have a bad day and kill an entire race when our mom is murdered", and it was a non-factor. (personally, to me, the GROSSEST part of AOTC).

if they'd put that in THIS movie shortly before Palpatine started feeding him bullshit, and left out the "dying in childbirth" shit altogether, it would have been better. Not that 'trying to see the future via the Force" has no precedent, because obv Luke did it too, but it's a weak motivation.

but rage at murder of mother, unconscionable act against Tusken Raiders, imbalance, and then Palpatine coming in saying "your buddies on the council don't trust you and btw are trying to overthrow me", perhaps with some deepfake evidence thrown in, vs him keeping Sheevy Wonder alive so he could teach him how to save Padme in childbirth and then randomly believing that the Jedi were evil when five minutes ago he didn't believe that....meh.

but idk I still really like this one, it's definitely ominous af now though given the state of the world and its backsliding into autocracy.

I have been reading prequel-era EU material since the start of the pandemic (no, not exclusively, gosh, but AMA!) so I'm all up in that dystopia and...yeah, so many discomfiting parallels with our world today.

Lucas gave those folks some cool blocks with which to worldbuild but the dozens of novels and comics and TV episodes set between films just have to do their best to make sense of things like Anakin's inconsistent slide into the dark side.

I don't think it's """""canon"""" but I have come across some musings that his entire relaysh w/Padme may involve Force suggestion (his own or Uncle Palpy's). Which, y'know, Occam's razor and all that.
