Wait, so does Alaska have one county or zero counties??

My co-worker and I wanted to see the county-by-county breakdown of Alaskan votes, seeing if Anchorage or Juneau were more neutral than the other counties, and I loaded up the CNN map and got this!:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/AK/P/00/index.html

The hell?

Biggest landmass state in the country, too.

OK, did some research... there are plenty of "boroughs" and "census areas", but no "counties", per se... but surely they have some vague boundaries... I guess the CNN folks just didn't have time to bother separating them out thinking it was pointless?

Cuz Louisiana doesn't have "counties", they have "parishes", but they were certainly marked on the site.

Denali Borough!
I wonder how many emo inuits live there?

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, I know of a couple whose lives were destroyed because they entered the "wrong bar" in Skagway (black man, white woman couple).. essentially, the guy was hassled by the locals and called racial epiphets, so he was pushed, and he actually defended himself... as a result, he was put in jail on very suspicious terms, and she had to go home back to DC without him and launch a mini campaign/publicity stunt to let people know of the unwarranted cruelty put upon her boyfriend, and work very hard to get him out of jail. I'm sure he's out by now, I hope.

I don't know the specifics of what went down in the bar.. but it's disheartening, to say the least.

anyway, thank you, lawrence.

(Wow, life in the Aleutians West must be... exciting)

nyuk nyuk.

So is the name of the largest mountain in the U.S. officially called Mt. Denali now? Has the McKinley namesake been officially retired now?

twiki's ho and dr. theo slapping ass, Friday, 5 November 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Aleutians West has the only part of American territory straight up that was claimed by the Japanese in WWII.

It's also a hotbed of the Russian Orthodox Church -- but so is a good chunk of the state in general.

Wow, put one down for civil rights!

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 5 November 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering the same thing. But the NYTimes version of that purple county breakdown map had at least one blue section in Alaska.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 5 November 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

And I have to say that Yukon-Koyukuk looks a smidge bigger than San Bernadino county.

Land area isn't really a factor in divying up a state into counties. Lookit Arizona, California, etc..

You're referring to Bridget Cross, formerly of Unrest?

And Alaska has some major land mass, but what sort of population distribution does it have?

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 6 November 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

aren't most of the major population centres on the coast?

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

most of alaska's major population centers are DNE

wtf, it's hella not populated

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

Could I find an ILX thread of someone bitching about how there are too few counties in Alaska? Yes, yes I could.
