Is that during a free museum day?
if so, hit up the AIC and MCA

even if not, they're worth seeing if you're into that kind of thing.

I went to the Middle Eastern Bakery and Grocery today for the first time. I can't believe I haven't been there in the 3 months I've been here.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 6 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Although, this garlic hummus lingers quite a bit.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 6 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you been to Taste of Lebanon across the street? Gotta get a falafel and hummus wrap there. Gotta.

Kenan (kenan), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds awesome right about now, Jeff and xpost Kenan!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm off now to eat at 1492 Tapas. I hear good things. Reports forthcoming.

Kenan (kenan), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm a chi-town ex-patriot. i really miss the city. in a used book store last night i read 'chicago' by studs terkel and it brought me to tears (but i'm a sap anyway). can't wait to go home...

nora (nora), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Chicago is one of my favourite US cities (that I visited while backpacking - oddly (apparently) my favourite US city - favourite city ful stop, in fact - is Pittsburgh.) It has a very nice 'feel' to it.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to the D0uble D00r tonight to see H0t snakes! :-D It was awesome. I walked there from my apartment. They played with R3d 3yed Legends - great show. And I had Honker's Al3 - another great thing from Chicago...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Sunday, 7 November 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna take a pic of myself now, post H0t Snakes show, but n/a didn't want me messing with his camera ddrunk. Also, becauwse I don't have pants on, but also I wouldn't take a pic of myself below the waist anyways.

But yeah, chicago rules.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Sunday, 7 November 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Drunk and pantsless is one of my favorite ways to be. Congratulations!

Those are gorgeous, Kenan! What building interior is that?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That, my dear, is the naturally lit lobby of the Rookery, 209 S. LaSalle, designed by one Frank Lloyd Wright. It really is stunning.

Kenan (kenan), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is the Middle Eastern Bakery & Grocery?

Also, does anyone know where I can get spinach pierogi?

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan, That looks much more welcoming than his studio house, which I toured with my dad on my birthday.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Middle Eastern Bakery: on Foster between Clark and Ashland. you can't miss it, since Foster between Clark and Ashland is about 1/3 of a block. I don't know about pierogi. I buy 'em frozen and fry them myself.

xpost -- I haven't done the Oak Park house tour yet. I hear they're all surprisingly small. Actually, the lobby of the Rookery is surprisingly small as well, once you're in it, but there's no way to take a picture of it that won't make it look spacious. That's part of the genius.

Kenan (kenan), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Hollywood Beach is great in the summer, when you can watch Ice Man and Maverick play volleyball.

Kenan (kenan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Things I need pictures of, to make myself cry:

Apartment - 15o1 n. b3ll / North between Bell and Damen / Division - Jinx, Leo's, etc. / Montrose - east of Ashland? Minimall with Subway, etc; house across street / area around Wilson, Sunnyside / Nightclub - Berlin / U of C admin building and green roof across Ellis / Rogers Park: Pannini Pannini (on Pratt) if still in business / down Sheffield from the Mongolian barbeque place / streets around Empty Bottle, Sonotheque / used car lots on Western

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

They have spiffed up Leo's in the last couple of months: new menus, new tables, they took down all the dusty old postcards, etc. I can't tell if this means it sucks now. Probably.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna move to chicago.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Also in that North+Bell region: the strangely classy Polish hot-dog place on the north side of North (but obviously east of Western).

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You should. We can go see more crappy experimental Super-8 films and awesome masked political bands!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss saying that I lived "south of North and east of Western." Saying that is as fun as saying "I come from the land of the burning ice and the frozen fire."

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I NEED A CHICAGO VACATION.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd lik to learn more about art. Perhaps MARK can tell me.

Some ILXers have met my brother, but he doesn't know anything about art.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why, but I always pictured you as the lonely only child of older parents, adam.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

errrr, THANKS!

No I am an older brother of one brother, Nicholas, who is 23 years old. My parents are both in their early-to-mid fifties.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I was an only child sometimes...it looks like fun.

So I am leaving the office pretty soon, not to return for a few days. I will surely check in on ILX before I leave plus I have Jaymc's number. This is exciting!

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yes, you've got my number, but do you know my street? And if I meet you, would you know we were meant to meet?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Are those Belle And Sebastian lyrics?

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to recall you saying that you have a buzzer on the inside of your apartment or something.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, this is Adam, by the way. Dial Rat For Terror is just a humorous Larry Cohen reference. We had a thread about him yesterday.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys, dude.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah!

I'm sorry, I'm not very hip to young people's rock music.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

why does ilx no longer tell me which threads i've read or which ones have been posted to after i've read them?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Andrew had to disable that temporarily.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Andrew had to disable that function temporarily because it was making everything run reeeeallllly slowly yesterday.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. well it sort of makes ilx too much of a pain to use...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never even used that feature before!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the only way i can tell what threads i've been reading. and since i basically haven't posted to or started any new threads in a month or two....

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i'm enjoying the oral sex thread at the moment. it's a good thing i'm not working.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm at home now...and my secret santa package arrived! (I KNOW WHO YOU ARE) I haven't opened it yet...

Anyway, I just remembered one thing - if we see a "Lincoln Park Trixie", would you be so kind as to point said Trixie out for me? Great!

Jaymc, I printed out your high school journal blog and read it on the train home. Hilarious! You were like a young Capote.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

!!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc had a blog in high school?!?!?!?!?!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he was always so ahead of the curve!

No, this is the next best thing! I'd link it but I don't want to get in trouble - you can get to it through his regular blog.

Also...does that mean that Oops knows all of these people (in Jaymc's high school blog)?

It's hard to tell if you were are ironist or not in your formative years, Jaymc. Some of your footnotes suggest that you yourself aren't even sure how sincere most of this is (?). I especially like the part about the Jewish girl, but I guess I would.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm most curious about this part - (if I may)

" But of course, good Genevieve Webs+er was also accounted for, and she is a sparkling conversationalist, as we chatted about movies and other such things. I really like that girl, to be sure. I honestly do. I was staring at her tonight and thikning she looked like child actress Christina Ricci, but maybe just because of the forehead. Otherwise, she looks like a bat. That's what Adam says, and I agree. I thought Tatyana M. Ali on last night's "Fresh Prince" looked rather Christina Ricci-esque. Genevieve, now at least she's white."

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(emphasis mine)

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm all for a books on tape version.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Read by Peter O'Toole.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 December 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i really miss having the gall and inspiration to write down my impressions (however nasty) of everyone i knew.... i mean, by no means do i want to be 16 again, but there are certain things i'd be too selfconscious to do now that might be worth doing.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

absolutely.

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 December 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the "now at least she's white" part means "hey isn't it crazy that I thought this black actress resembled Christina Ricci -- it's sort of crazy that my friend Genevieve looks like C. Ricci, too, but it least it makes more sense, since she's white."

As for the looking-like-a-bat, my friend Adam would always come up with different animals that people we knew resembled. Some would be oddly specific, like "snow owl." Perhaps a future footnote will explain this.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, this is weird: today, someone at the GiantRobot.com forum started a thread about my high school blog. I have no idea who it is; I only found out through my referrals.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

WOOO ADAM AND BURRITOS IN LESS THAN THREE HOURS!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i'll be there too!

*everyone frowns, decides to stay home*

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss Chicago. There is nothing to do here. Nothing. I can't even find things worth irresponsibly wasting money on.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 24 December 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

are you in kansas city?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 24 December 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Last night was fun, you guys. Adam is safe in Indiana now and I am eating snacks at my parents' house.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 December 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone know the name of that shoe store on that star shaped corner of, um, damen/milwaukee/something else? its right by an el-stop, not far from mod, and right by that concert venue place. they had a pair of shoes i really liked that were like $375 at the time, and thinking that the other stuff there was on the affordable side, that maybe no one bought them and my size is left and it'll be on crazy sale for my sister to get for me.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 December 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Fluevog?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

no, thats not it. i think it was right on the corner and had two entrances. one on the diagonal street, and one on the north/south street, and they connected.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

City Soles?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ah yes, thats it. looked up city soles in the phonebook, called, and they have the shoes left and theyre on sale. yay! but the sales guy has to call me back because hes with a customer. i hope theyre like 75% off.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That's City Soles alright. Every pair of shoes I own is from there. They're overfashionable: they keep these showy Italian numbers in for like a month, and nobody buys them, and so every now and then it's just Ridiculous Sale Time over there, where you hem and haw for ten seconds and soon enough they're like "fine, we'll give you all three pairs for $100, just take the damn things." I've never once bought a single pair of shoes there -- always two or three at a time.

Former ILXor Tiiiiiim (aka Optimus Primate) used to work there!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i saw these awesome black leather costume national half-shoe/half-boot things there in early october for $375, but they were sitting there all alone on the shelf like "oh look, amidst all the kenneth cole and sauconys, we have BIG TIME EUROPEAN LABELS TOO OH YES!". but i didnt buy them because even though they were really really hot, it didnt like their usual clientele would be that interested in them, or its price. so yay, i hope they have my size.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually should go back to chicago in january. my parents were upset that i didn't come home for the holidays. maybe if i wait until then, the shoes will be even cheaper. anyone know of anything fun happenning in january to schedule my visit around? some big concert or party or something?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 24 December 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

are you in kansas city?

No, a place in Central Kansas called Lincoln. One of the hundreds of tiny farming towns out here. Kansas City would be a dream compared to this. We went to the mall yesterday, which is 45 minutes away, a center of activity, and more depressing than any mall I've ever been into. Hot tip: stay away from Sam Goody. Far away.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 24 December 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My kingdom for a Virgin Megastore!

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 24 December 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"virgin megastore" sounds like one of those faux-english names you'd find in a non-anglophone country, doesn't it? like a sex shop on the rue st denis...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 24 December 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Buh?

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 25 December 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc-how was Paprikash? I am taking my mom to Chicago on the 28 & 29th and really want to take her there. But if it was rubbish we won't go.
I hope there are pictures from adam and Mrs. adam's visit. (hint)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Saturday, 25 December 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)
