Dear Providence, RI: Thanks for the free drinks last night

So last night I went down to Providence and had spent most of the $20 I'd allotted myself for booze for the night and I pop my last two dollars into a RI state lotto machine, scratch off my ticket and WIN $20!

I basically had a free night of boozing, c/o Rhode Island.

What a great state!

What a cool place-name for that to happen, too.

I'm going to be staying at the Old Court B&B on Benefit Sreet on 11/11 and at the Westin on Exchange Street from 11/14 to 11/17. Some recommended local attractions from the B&B:
The Old Court is ideally situated for anyone visiting Providence. A three minute walk puts you in the center of Downtown Providence or in the middle of the campuses of Brown University and Rhode Island School Of Design. Benefit Street itself is a major point of interest, featuring one of the greatest collections of Colonial and Victorian houses in the country. You can spend days wandering the East Side admiring great architecture, art galleries or shopping at local the specialty stores.
Any other suggestions? Thank you, dear Providence.

Well, Trinity Reperatory Company is doing the Henry IV & V plays this month (I'm going to be there on the thirteenth for Henry V, but I don't know if they're going to have tickets available on show days or not.

There really are great buildings on the east side.

You could go record shopping (Armageddon Shop on Broadway has lots of used vinyl as well as CDs and cassettes. specializing in noise, metal, hardcore punk and indie, the still have tons of dollar records/classic rock/etc.) Also there's Tom's Tracks on Thayer Street, but that kinda sucks. The rad shop In Your Ear closed in the last year or so. If you're looking for classical, jazz or "old person" music, there's a store on Wickenden Street worth checking out, though I don't remember the name of it right now.

On the same street as Armageddon, on the west side, is Julian's, which is a really great restaurant/bar. Go there for breakfast or brunch sometime. It's really, really really good stuff--often with a spanish influence. Sometimes they'll have a DJ playing jams, and there's usually nice art on the walls. Other good food: Brickway on Wickenden Street (breakfast, sammiches, etc), India (Pine street, I think? A location downtown, not far from the Westin) or god, I dunno.. there are a ton of good restaurants in Providence, but I'm usually not able to afford lavish dining. For good Mexican, there's Tortilla Flats on Hope street.

Go to the RISD museum--there's usually something worth a look, if you're into art at all. Similarly, there may be galleries and things going on that weekend.

Rock show listings at lotsofnoise.com, but it doesn't look very interesting that weekend.

GO TO 80S NIGHT AT CLUB HELL!

LOL!

No, really.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Sunday, 7 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It would probably hit too close to home -- the LOL aspect. Thanks, Ian, especially for the record shopping advice. I wish I went to the theater more. 4:48 psychosis is playing here and I'm missing it!

For good Mexican, there's Tortilla Flats on Hope street.
pardon my newbie status in prov, BUT, the best mexican i've ever had in my life exists way up on Atwells at a place called Girbladis. simple food that is cheap as shit. 4 tacos = 7 bucks. shredded beef, onion, cilantro, homemade tortillas. so so so good.

brock (brock), Monday, 8 November 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

for drinks, COME VISIT ME AT TURTLE SOUP ON SATURDAYS....cheap pilsner urquell on tap (4.50 for a 20 oz!) and three dollar shots. come one come all.

youn, Saturday, 13 November 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
I'm going to Providence again.

youn, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

lucky duck! how was your last trip then?
in your ear has closed? wow, i'm behind the times...

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

will you be there on a saturday? cos sometimes they have waterfire, which is lovely!

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to Providence in about 2 weeks. Boy is now at URI, actually, so I expect I'm going to see a lot of Providence, since it's not so far away from his place. (As if anything in RI is really far away from anything else...)

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

sweet, sweet small state
have a dells lemonade for me

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Lyra, I'm jealous: URI is my hometown.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Go to Captain Jacks and look for the black-haired waitress. She's my sister.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Is Captain Jacks in Kingston? And is that even the right town name for URI?
I'm sadly more familiar with Newport than Providence so I'm considering being a dork & getting a small Providence guidebook. If I just let Boy show me around I'll see nothing but Irish bars.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure there's enough to warrant a guidebook. you could probably walk the entire downtown area in like... 20 mins. if that. there's the state house, waterfront, brown uni area, and federal hill. i suggest you start up at brown, wander the pretty old streets around there, grab some lunch on thayer street (and shop!), then head downhill to the river, walkk along that, look at the state house then head up to federal hill for a nice italian dinner!

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Captain Jacks is in Matunuck, which is part of South Kingstown. South Kingstown is the larger town in which Kingston is one of the villages.

(And Providence has changed a lot, recently ... a book might be really helpful).

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't know jack about south county. All the people saying "haha as if anything in RI is far apart" FAIL to realize that the state is divided by water.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and the tolls to cross Newport / Jamestown are outlandish and prohibative most of the time.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Laura puts in that you cannot get any special rates for commuters, residents, frequent crossers, etc.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

The campus of Brown University is great. I like the tea shop on Thayer St. near the bookstore and the open area in front of CIT with the public sculptures and things.

youn, Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

I like all the different kinds of leaves.

youn, Friday, 12 August 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I hate the CIT and the SciLi area. UGZ

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Friday, 12 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Be sure to go to Prospect Park on College Hill for *the* definitive picturesque view of the city. Also, the older parts of Swan Point Cemetary are very beautiful with old mausoleums, stauary, gravestones, etc.

elmo (allocryptic), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I went to the grad student bar and had anchor steam and sierra nevada and discovered that I like anchor steam better. It is terrific. I think I will get up early and go to Prospect Park tomorrow morning. I don't know if it is safe to walk there at night. It probably is. Then I might.

youn, Friday, 12 August 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I got really really drunk in Prospect Park before going to my high school reunion. It was me, my friend S., and this group of homeless dudes and there warn't nuffin 2 worry about.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 12 August 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

I have had sex in Prospect Park! (POSTING FROM GREYHOUND BUS)

Also, I have pulled at Brown grad student bar. YAY
