John (jdahlem), Monday, 8 November 2004 01:53 (twenty years ago)

this thread sucks and makes some pretty godawful assumptions.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand this thread. If it isn't ironic or half-joking, it's appalling, and if it is why are people upset about people making joke answers?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago)

Because there are about 700 serious discussions threads right now that look exactly liek this, with more words, right now, Kevin :\

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago)

My sister, a huge country fan who has gone to several NASCAR events and lives in Arizona, voted for Kerry. My dad, who is from Philadelphia and listens to the same music as Alex and is completely anti-Christian atheist, voted for Bush. I hate these fucking threads with their assumptions and I just don't even find it funny as a joke at this point.

This is why we AREN'T WINNING.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Ally excruciatingly OTM

miccio (miccio), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:26 (twenty years ago)

Ally - I'm agreeing with you; the people I was saying were complaining about joke answers wasn't you - it was people who seemed to complain about posts like "If you believe in God" or "If you have arms" or something.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:27 (twenty years ago)

i was not under the assumption that this was a "serious" thread

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:28 (twenty years ago)

when my mom asked my grandmother to explain why she sent her a "france vs. freedom" e-mail, she said it was just fun and not to take it so seriously.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Well, if it wasn't, what was wrong with the posts like "if you believe in God"?

37. you're convinced you're revealing the rampant hypocrisy in this thread by subtly taking the substance of each listed item to the next frightening level, when you're really just steamrolling over everything and making an ass out of yourself.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

i don't want to fight w/ you, ally. it's also good that you know 2 folks whose voting habits went against what they were "supposed to," as do i (e.g., a personal injury lawyer-friend who voted for bush even though bush bashed his kind throughout the campaign and if national tort reform gets passed HE'LL BE OUTTA WORK). but if any of the things are not true IN GENERAL, please point them out and correct us.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:31 (twenty years ago)

but if any of the things are not true IN GENERAL, please point them out and correct us.

-- latebloomer (posercore24...), November 8th, 2004.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:32 (twenty years ago)

and frankly, if people DON'T think that the pro-bush people DID NOT so vote on the basis of certain religious beliefs then they've NOT been paying attention to what bush voters THEMSELVES have been saying about WHY they voted the way that they did.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago)

"You should not vote if..."

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah cuz liberals ain't capable of childish, simple-minded intolerance, uh uh no way. They never dismiss what they don't understand like them gay-bashers. nope.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago)

you try talking to the jesus freaks and see how much love & understanding YOU have for their stupid-ass views.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago)

haha "they started it!" grow up.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:38 (twenty years ago)

e.g., my job has been outsourced to india, my son is draft-age but gosh darnit i'm gonna vote republican 'cause two homos in san francisco kissing and getting married is GROSS!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, but I'm completely with Miccio, Ally and Tom here, perhaps unsurprisingly. I understand it's meant to be a joke thread, latebloomer is correct, etc.. But they have all nailed it and I've been trying to say some of the same things here for the past few days.

Frankly, I wasn't surprised at the reactions the day after the election. I won't be entirely surprised at the reactions now. But if y'all keep this up and just DON'T STOP, and if you're emblematic of a larger problem (and in many ways I fear you are), then frickin' either hand over the Congress even more to the GOP in 2006 or hope and pray things get so goddamn bad that when you get to laugh and sneer "I told you so" in people's faces that they're so disgusted with Bush that they don't also slug you in turn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago)

...another of Callum's aliases, I'm afraid.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:54 (twenty years ago)

MY FATHER, WHOSE DAUGHTER WAS ONCE GIVEN A LEFT BEHIND BOOK BY SOME RELIGIOUS FREAKOS THATS STILL PROBABLY LYING AROUND THE ATTIC SOMEWHERE AND SO TECHNICALLY IS OWNED BY HIM, VOTED FOR KERRY. YET YOU GUYS ARE SAYING HE SHOULD NOT VOTE BECAUSE OF THIS?????? I AM APPALLED.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 8 November 2004 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Although I'm for Kerry, I think the proper end to the sentence is
(You should not vote if) "you need someone to convince you that your vote is immportant."

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 8 November 2004 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh cripes. First i get shit for taking this election too seriously, and now i make a joke (`twas i that made allusions to contemporary country music and NASCAR) and suddenly I'm the fuckin' antichrist. This thread is a joke, as should be treated as such. And lighten up -- you have four years ahead to be walked on, why not let off a little steam while you can?

It's okay to be mad about this election. Not mad, are you? Try this on for size:

President Bush has announced his intention to appoint Dr. W. David Hager to head up the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. This committee has not met for more than two years, during which time its charter lapsed. As a result, the Bush Administration
is tasked with filling all eleven positions with new members. This position does not require Congressional approval. The FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee makes crucial decisions on matters relating to drugs used in the practice of obstetrics, gynecology and related specialties,
including hormone therapy, contraception, treatment for infertility, and medical alternatives to surgical procedures for sterilization and pregnancy termination.

Dr. Hager is the author of "As Jesus Cared for Women: Restoring Women Then and Now." The book blends biblical accounts of Christ healing women with case studies from Hager's practice. His views of health care are far outside
the mainstream for reproductive technology and modern gynecological practice. Dr. Hager is a practicing OB/GYN who describes himself as "pro-life" and refuses to prescribe contraceptives to unmarried women.

In the book Dr. Hager wrote with his wife, entitled "Stress and the Woman's Body," he suggests that women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome should seek help from reading the bible and praying. As an editor and contributing author of "The Reproduction Revolution: A Christian Appraisal of Sexuality
Reproductive Technologies and the Family," Dr. Hager appears to have endorsed the medically inaccurate assertion that the common birth control pill is an abortifacient (causes abortion). We are concerned that Dr. Hager's strong religious beliefs may color his assessment of technologies that are necessary to protect women's lives or to preserve and promote women's health. Dr. Hager's track record of using religious beliefs
to guide his medical decision-making makes him a dangerous and inappropriate candidate to serve as chair of this committee. Critical drug public policy and research must not be held hostage by anti-abortion politics.

Members of this important panel should be appointed on the basis of science and medicine, rather than politics and religion. American women deserve no less.

85. Whether you would like to consume an alcoholic beverage with a candidate is more important than a candidate's positions on matters of national importance.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago)

You should not vote if this applies to you: "A recent survey by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland found that nearly 70 percent of President Bush's supporters believe the U.S. has come up with "clear evidence" that Saddam Hussein was working closely with Al Qaeda. A third of the president's supporters believe weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq. And more than a third believe that a substantial majority of world opinion supported the U.S.-led invasion."
