In all seriousness...are Man U shite?

So 0-0 against the utter shit from the blue half of Manchester. Their defence played us off the park and none of our millionaire strikers could hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

Is it time to sit back and either think of Europe or realise that it's going to be a couple of years before we take back our rightful place at the top of the Premiership?

Simon Green (fatmancunian), Monday, 8 November 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I think it might be a lot longer than that.

Bumfluff, Monday, 8 November 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Though the O'Neill factor might change all that (and that's looking more imminent than ever now).

Bumfluff, Monday, 8 November 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

is van nistelrooy back next game?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

before we take back our rightful place at the top of the Premiership

tcha, you sound like a Spurs fan...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the utter shit from the blue half of Manchester

I take offence to that. It was mostly our second string, some kids playing their second ever games in the Premiership and stuff, and they never looked too worried.

Never looked like scoring. The Blue half of Manchester runs supreme another season of derbies. When will the "six easy points" myth run dry for you guys?

3underscore (___), Monday, 8 November 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think they are shite. They're just having their bad spell early.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 8 November 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They are finished.

the bellefox, Monday, 8 November 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

even though their recent form is better than the current champions?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Chelski will walk it this season. The one thing which might upset the apple cart is the strong from of Boro and Bolton, who are likely to take points from almost anyone.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if people feel that Everton's position flatters them somewhat? i know Everton fans would take offence to that, but it's merely a suggestion.

if Man Utd don't finish third i'll be shocked.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought everton would do well.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Manyoo midfield is hugely lacking in strength and depth compared to either Arsenal's or Chelsea's, and I can't really see any long-term replacements for Keane, Scholes or Giggs amongst the younger/newer crop, and none of those players are the force they once were. Also the defence is still hugely gaffe-prone, Ferdinand or no Ferdinand.

I would still much rather see Man Utd win the Premiership than either Arsenal or Chelsea.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

that to me is the equiv. of voting Bush!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck does THAT have to do with anything!!

Simon Green (fatmancunian), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

so you prefer Bush?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck you sebastian!

WHY DO YOU BLAME FOOTBALL? WHY ARE YOU APOLOGISING FOR THE HOOLIGANS?!?!?!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course our position flatters us - Everton are NOT the third best team in England. We've prospered thanks to the fixture computer shoving a lot of obvious strugglers our way nice and early before our squad is stretched diaphanous by injury and suspension. Still, four away wins is pretty impressive and if we'd taken more than one of our many, many chances vs Spurs and Villa we'd be in an even better position.

We seem to have a reputation as 'grafters' but I don't believe that was any different last season when it took us until March to chalk up seven wins; we seem to be better tactically and technically - Gravesen has never been better.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

timmy cahill was a great signing from millwall too.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Everton are NOT the third best team in England

Which is a shame, because you guys would obviously appreciate it much more than ManYoo fans seem to!

frankiemachine, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"the utter shit from the blue half of Manchester"

"Piss off bellend!"

Simon's great, isn't he?

Not that we Blues have an awful lot to crow about, but Jordan (no jokes please) had a fine game on Sunday, and Richard Dunne was a colossus for all the right reasons. Richard 'Ton' no more.

I was amused by a couple of things that Ferguson said afterwards. Firstly, he defended the indefensible by saying that Smith had only made two tackles all game, forgetting that both of those had been studs-up howlers.

I also liked Ferguson's pronunciation of the word 'clear'. With his propensity for replacing Ls with Ws (Weeds, Wiverpool, etc) it sounded like he was claiming '2 queer penalties'.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

richard dunne has been in excellent form for a while now, its good to see him getting widespread props for it since his sunday performance (although being a manyoo fan i wish that stellar performance had come against arsenal or chelsea instead ;-))

as for manyoo, there are several problems:

- error-prone silvestre at centre-half
- rooney and ronaldo will probably remain raw and inconsistent for a while yet, despite their undoubted promise.
- great keane games have become increasingly rare the last 2 and 1/3 seasons, to the point where he looks ordinary most of the time now.
- most obvious candidate to fill in for keane when he's knackered was the reliable nicky butt, a player i always liked - sold to newcastle because he's slipped down the midfield pecking order. and who is ahead of him? desperately ordinary players - kleberson, djemba-djemba, miller, o'shea, p.neville - all have looked no better than average on their run-outs in midfield (and frequently worse than that). fletcher may be ok.
- scholes in poor form so far this season - he's only 29 and he was very good last season, so i hesitate to say he's "past it", but he we need him back to his best sooner rather than later.
- giggs may well be past it, i haven't decided yet. i wish we had bought duff.

on the plus side:
- i like carroll in goal.
- blunders against portsmouth aside, ferdinand has had a strong return.
- smith and heinze have provided a healthy dose of battling (and footballing) qualities since their arrival.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember a few years ago people asking Ferguson about who he was going to get to eventually replace Roy Keane and he said "I don't need to get anyone - Nicky Butt is right here."

I don't really understand why he let him go.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any truth in the rumour that Scholes is seriously ill?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

most obvious problem i forgot to write:

- perhaps ferguson has just lost his ability to organise and motivate footballers? for all their quality striking options, united's attacking is all unfocussed huffing and puffing, with none of arsenal's precision.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i hadn't heard that rumour, billy.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish we had bought duff

Or Robben.

Ferguson's preference of Kleberson, Djemba-Djemba etc over Butt continues to baffle me. Although at least Kleberson occasionally has a good game, Djemba-Djemba is the worst player I have ever seen play regularly for United.

(The rumour I've heard is that it is Darren Fletcher who is seriously ill)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(... but still fit enough to play for Scotland! Arf!)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still in shock that Everton loose there two best strikers and start punching above their weight afterwards.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

rooney should play in midfield

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

and be made to make at least two passes before allowed to take a shot.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

rooney behind smith and van nistlerooy ken? the thought has occurred, but perhaps it is a little gung-ho?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd hardly say Everton were "punching above their weight", draw with Man Utd notwithstanding. So far this season they have beaten Palace, West Brom, Man City, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Southampton and Norwich. When disgruntled Spurs fans talk about "the sort of teams we should be beating", these are the guys they are talking about. The difference with Everton is that they actually HAVE beaten them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean.. it used to work pretty well with scholes as the dude who makes the little wavey runs and occasionally have a pop at goal. now scholes seems to stop doing it and rooney hits the ball hard enough.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt: yes, but last season we lost our last four games - all to bottom-sixers - to finish 17th. And that was with Rooney, Radzinski and Unsworth. I think we may have redefined, or reestablished, our weight class. When I look at the rest of the Premiership I tend to think that only Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool, Newcastle, Villa, Boro and possibly Spurs have obviously superior squads. I thought this last season and the season before too (ok, perhaps Villa and Boro haven't been in the second tier for long). And yet last season we were inferior to a further eight clubs.

I see we play the Arsenal youth team tonight. My fourth sentence above still stands.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I might put Bolton in that second tier now, but otherwise I agree.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon's great, isn't he?

-- Japanese Giraffe, November 9th, 2004.

I do try!!!

Richard Dunne was the man of the match. Jordan had a great game as well and Wright-Phillips was amazing as ever.

I've heard the Paul Scholes rumour as well.

I thought Roy Keane looked absolutely dreadful on Sunday as well. It's all gone a bit PT at OT!

Simon Green (fatmancunian), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps he should now retire from club football to prolong his international career.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba = spot on.

Aww, thanks for being a sport, Simon! Not sure about Little Shaun. I thought his performance was full of mistakes, apart from one mad, take-the-long-route dribble inside his own area. The bloke's got some bottle.

As for your lot, Ronaldo is so far and away your best player - no contest. And although his crossing was amusingly crap on Sunday, Heinze looks a great player.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just found out what happened to our lot in the Cup last night.

Anyone who's worried about how their team is doing... just look at Southampton, and thank the Lord you don't know Lowe.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

At least your lot lost to people old enough to vote.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'd say a Premiership defence conceding five against Watford is actually worse.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

japanese giraffe - i don't think ronaldo's performances in the premiership have been particularly consistent. he's had more ineffective games this season than effective ones, as far as i can tell

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine is an opposition fan's view. He's the only one of United's players who really had me quaking in my boots on Sunday.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, it's fair to say I'm ever so slightly happier now.
