Who really cares about Princess Diana anyway?

All this memorial fund nonsense and "Princess of Comnpassion". Tell me why I should care about a posh English toff who met an unfortunately early demise but who was still well spoilt?

Mr Truth, Monday, 8 November 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems idiotic, doesn't it? I have this vague memory that 12 years ago, when I was at boarding school, everyone thought I was a freak already cos I was vegetarian and they never made any concessions so like if it was spaghetti bolognaise, I had to scrap the mince off each strand of spaghetti with my fork or not have dinner. And anyway it was one of those spaghetti bolognaise nights and the warden-lady was at the head of the table and I started cracking some jokes about what a mockery the royalty was and how it shouldn't be allowed and something about Princess Diana, and my friend, this redhead, said to me quietly 'now you've done it, the warden's a real fan of Diana' and I looked at her more closely and noticed she had her hair done in the Diana-do. And sure enough, there were problems from that time forward. Nothing overt, she didn't even speak coldly to me, she just took this kind of incredibly detached attitude towards me. Like when you secretly hate a kid but you can't hate them overtly because that would just be evil, like kicking a dog even if it is a really bad dog. A really ungrateful dog!

So in answer to this question, I would say that you will never be able to understand who really cares about Princess Diana unless you really care about her, it's a kind of tautology (or koan?) like who cares about soccer.

its fashionable to love the celebrities who care about people in poor countries.

Dunno, he was pretty quiet.

Um, back on topic... The thing is, people do love the monarchy. I'm indifferent to Diana personally and I'm a republican (anti-monarchy UK version) so I'll never get it, like xx said.

A worthwhile contribution I've made to this thread, I think.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 8 November 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are we suddenly caring about caring about Princess Diana?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 8 November 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't care.

i was very very drunk in the Latin American Club with about six other people, one of them British, who got really dismissive about her, then later, got terribly depressed about it. I was actually so drunk I don't remember any of this though and was surprised all over again about it the next morning when I saw it on the news.

DJ Mencap, Friday, 31 August 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

My sister went all funny the week of Diana's funeral, having previously never given a flying fuck about her, I got into an argument with her about it - she'd probably deny it now

What now for man who wrote 'Diana' on his forehead?

My friend's sister has a collection of Diana figurines. Always creeped me out.

Also creeped me out.

You've packed in your job and got up at 5am for the last six months to attend the Diana inquest. Now that it's all over, what do you do?

so many fitting responses to this fizzing around inside my head that i can't bear to commit myself to any one.

I'd go with "YAHHH TRICK YAHHH"

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

I saw the man with Diana written on his forehead outside the High Court yesterday. He obviously looked like he was fishing for an interview with one of the many TV crews, but was being ignored by all. He was wearing his crown, but the face writing was sadly a bit smudged.

Neil S, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

I care about Princess Diana. Does that mean there's something wrong with me? I collected pictures of the wedding as a child. She was so beautiful. Uncommonly beautiful.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 28 July 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

Also, the picture in the article is so grainy the person in it could be anyone with a similar hairdo to Diana's, it's no proof she was alive before she died.

Okay but wait...isn't anyone alive hours before they died?

“You will be polled on what you believe was the cause of her death and who was behind it,” Turner said, adding that he has yet to receive any complaints from the Palace. “We ask questions like ‘Do you think the royals were involved?’ ‘Do you think she was pregnant?’ All we do is ask questions on: what’s your opinion?”

Turner insisted: “It’s definitely not in poor taste. It’s just showing the route of what happened. For people who’ve never been to Paris, it’s just showing the topography, and the distance, and the tunnel, and that kind of stuff…It’s done very professionally.”
