But if a guy does it, ooooooh you’re a big nasty misogynist, explain yourselves.

Chantel, Monday, 8 November 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My best friend calls me a slapper a great deal of the time. But the key thing is that she's my best friend, not her gender.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Anna, check this out, it's REALLY weird and cool! If you call someone of either sex or of indeterminate gender a HOPELESS VIRGIN WITH NO MATES, NO CLUES AND TOO MUCH SPARE TIME you're not being sexist at all.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that is really cool.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes calum is a virgin, sometimes he is in a monogamous four year relationship. either way he seems very bitter.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe he's only joking?

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Same way that I can call a good friend of mine a c*nt, but if someone else did it, they would be likely on the receiving end of a kicking.

3underscore (___), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

virgnity and monogamous four year relationships are no laughing matter

Hey, Steve, is that what Derrida and similar meant about mutable identities? Because I wonder. Maybe I should get someone with a Cultural Studies MA to sort me out but fuck it, I'm too busy with my covetable media job to beg for help from, y'know, the intimidating world of academia. Are you too busy in your covetable media job to ask for help from the intimidating world of academia as well, Steve?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard anyone seriously call someone a slapper in a long time.

In answer to whether it is ok, I would say it depends whether the other women are right slappers or not.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I probably shouldn't reply to this question, but no, of course it is not okay - certainly not if it's meant insultingly, as opposed to messing about. It's nothing to do with gender, it's just manners really.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yes suzy i am, and of course i have to work twice as hard as you to get anywhere what with not being a WUMMAN!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It is quite obvious that men can't call women all the names women call each other (unless they're good friends), due to unequal power relations. It's the same as with whites or non-whites using the word "nigga".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

For example, I can call my friends "chicks", because they know there's no sexist thought behind that, but I wouldn't call girls I don't know that well "chicks".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

is it okay for me to call other men slappers? i rather enjoy that.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to quite enjoy calling my male friends "sluts".

Masonic Laundry Boom (kate), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

From now on, I'm going to call Stevem 'SlapperM'.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

bitch!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

slapperm!

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

So I guess Chantel really must be Callum then, seeing as they share the same bugbears and language of expressing them. The bugbear being their inability to understand polite discourse and thinking that 'the pendulum has swung back too far'.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i call phil two a slapper a lot

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could be a slapper.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

how did the term bugbear arise?

(alternative question: what is/was a bugbear?)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

a bugbear is like a carebear stevem.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think bugbear is related to words like bogey, boggle, boggart etc. as a kind of malevalent household spirit.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Uhm... that's not me. sorry.

Chantel, Monday, 8 November 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes calum is a virgin, sometimes he is in a monogamous four year relationship. either way he seems very bitter.

They don't *have* to be mutually exclusive

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 8 November 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

one can still be a virgin after a bukkake

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 November 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a slut, I'm a ho, I'm a freak

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 8 November 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a slapper?

briania (briania), Monday, 8 November 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Lady if you have to ask....! (it's another word for slut.)
