"Admittedly" and other overused ILX speech

Is the word "admittedly" used all the time by everyone on ILX because everyone's covering their ass or because everyone is so smart and self-aware?

I admit it. "Admittedly" makes me sick.

This thread could have been called "use other words please," but that is another ILX phrase that is overused.

Please list other overused and annoying phrases.

"overused"

I agree with you, insofar as "admittedly" is a verbal tic and rarely needed to complete the sense of a sentence. However, because real human speech is loaded with verbal tics, reproducing some of these tics into ILx posts helps to make them more conversational and informal, and somewhat makes up for the deficiencies of talking by typing. In this setting, the overuse of such meaningless or extraneous words is connected to the requirements of our art.

It still can bug the shit out of one, regardless.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"regardless" is next!

Huk-L, Monday, 8 November 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I use "inarguably" more than "admittedly."

and "festering" more than both combined!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Admittedly it's patently untrue that I am more annoyed by such speech more than I am annoyed by those who get annoyed at such trivial things.
I am bemused by this thread and will ponder it duly.

oops (Oops), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Admittedly" - admission - guilt - indie guilt?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that's the implication, yes.

The old man used to get pissed if we used the word really.
His old man hated the use of the word gross to mean disgusting rather than large.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not the thread duplication itself, it's what the repetition of this topic says about the personality of the average ILE poster, and how that reflects upon me.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Words are just words, they're just symbols of things or actions or whatever. So instead of getting mad at those of us who say "admittedly," perhaps you should examine why it annoys you when people own up to their own failings. Perhaps you feel guilty for not examining your own weaknesses and instead relying on a false machismo?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

people should stop using the word "magic stick." can't male ilxors find a less crass way to refer to their genitalia (though a search revealed that actually the majority of use women when referring to men's, ahem, "magic sticks.")? it demeans us all. grow up.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops! I searched for threads, instead of messages, or something.

I am marvelling. The majority of what? How exactly does one use a woman to refer to a penis (plz include diagrams where appropriate)?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

According to the search function, I have used the word "pimptacular" on ILE exactly as many times as I have used the word "admittedly".

The search function is fun. For people who are very bored.

Apparently, I use "admittedly" when I feel guilty about not being more knowledgeable. I also enjoy parentheticals:

Hmmm. I liked Moon and Antarctica quite a bit, though I've never really liked anything else I've heard (which, admittedly, isn't much). So I dunno what "better than M&A" means for me.
-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), March 16th, 2004.

I'm actually liking this album more than I thought I would. Prior to this, everything I've heard by !!! (admittedly not much has all sounded the same -- which is why I prefer Out Hud. But there's some nice things happening on this album. Two thirds of the way thru, "Hello Is This Thing On" is the highlight.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It turns out that, quotations excluded, I have used 'admittedly' a total of 7 times on ILX. From approximately 20000 posts, this is surprisingly low.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Admittedly, dan is otm

bostonneb, Monday, 8 November 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM is annoying and overused.

Logged Out, Monday, 8 November 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Admittedly, OTM may be overused. However it is not annoying. Surely you must admit that.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Admittedly lo**ed out is otm. And overused. Admittedly, we are underused.

bostonneb, Monday, 8 November 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Admittedly, OTM may be overused. However it is not annoying. Surely you must admit that.

You're right, I confess. When someone responds with a simple "OTM" to one of my posts, I get all giddy. But, when someone insults me and then someone else backs up that insult with an "OTM," the term becomes annoying.

Logged Out, Monday, 8 November 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I have used "admittedly" seven times in over 3000 posts. I am quite happy with the context in each case.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i used it once. i wouldn't have thought i'd have used it at all, it having that many syllables.
