Can we talk about not only how inappropriate the "God Bless Our / Pray for Our Troops" magnets are, but that they are made in China?

Hey, what about the pink breast cancer ribbon, though? What are you PRO-CANCER or something you black-hearted JERK?

Oh, we're sure they're useful.

For example, say you're stuck in traffic on the Williamsburg bridge in your 2003 Chevy Suburban, and another guy, who is a breast cancer researcher, is stuck behind you talking to his wife on his cell phone. He tells her that he has just dropped the kids off at violin practice, he took the garbage out before he left -- he even unplugged the coffee maker, but he just can't shake this strange nagging feeling that he has forgotten to do something. Just as those words come out of his mouth, he glances up and sees your pink magnetic breast cancer ribbon that has "Find a Cure" written across it, at which point he comically slaps his forehead and exclaims:

"Ohhhhhh YEAH! THAT'S WHAT I FORGOT TO DO!!! YOU KNOW, FUCKING CURE CANCER! HAHA, I TOTALLY FUCKING FORGOT THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. WTF! I TOTALLY SPACED! LOL! :P."

if I was far from home with every chance of not actually making it home again, every chance of never seeing my friends and family again, every chance of having shrapnel wedged in my head or a limb blown off, every chance of having mental or physical disorders for the rest of my life because of what I'd experienced in a war zone, then the knowledge that the people back home were praying for me would actually come as some comfort. No I'm not being sarcastic, I actually mean this.

The fact that they're being made in China is only a problem if you buy the jingoistic, patriostic, nationalist stance, is it not?

it's not as if it says "Pray that our troops will annihilate the Iraqi scum", is it?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I can understand the 'support or troops' ones. Sure, they deserve our support (even if the task they're being sent to do is completely asinine imperialism). However, telling people to pray for them puts a big old dick in the secular government ideal. Not to mention, they seem to think that our army has God's blessing to kill the heathens in the middle east or something. It just smacks of another crusade when people put it that way.

Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but damn. Made in motherfucking China. They wonder why we have to have wars abroad to sustain our way of life.

Pray for our troops. Pray for their troops. Pray that peace comes soon. There's nothing fellatious about it.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

pray for fellatio.

I'm actually 'praying' that our economy collapses soon, so that we won't be an international bully anymore. Also so that we realize we should focus more on sustainability just to keep living, not wars to keep living at our current standard of living (which is impossible).

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Praying for your soldiers has no effect on the ideal of secular government - that would only be the case if people had to pray for them. The idea of a secular society is not one without a religious life.

You must have a really long bumper.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish someone would make a pray for fellatio ribbon.

Dale Panopticalis (cprek), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd actually buy a pray for fellatio ribbon magnet
even though I don't have a car.

I think the US has far more protectionist trade arrangements than the UK and has done for some time - we got over our 'Made in [somewhere other than here]' outrage years ago and now shrug it off.

It does ppl good to pray. It does ppl good to know that they are being prayed for. Whether there is a God on the other end to "hear" the prayers is largely irrelevant.

Well, part of the problem is that our economy is shifting towards something we can't afford in the long run. It's hard to imagine a service-based economy for this country, where everyone simply sells goods and services to everyone else. It's unlikely we'll be able to sell enough services to other countries to make up for the amount of goods we have to import because we don't produce any at home. We've already got (and had for a while now) an enormous import/export defecit. When the economy starts to cool we're going to feel the effects of that at home, and it's really not going to be good.
