Fashionista people, can I have some advice?

I've got too many clothes & need to cut back, and don't have the time/patience for selling on eBay or whatever.. Does anyone have an opinion on whether it is worth keeping or selling (there is a posh consignment shop in my city that might take them) a couple of YSL Rive Gauche pieces that are not my size & I'll never wear?

There's a black dress, incredibly simple style and straight cut w/black velvet top & rest is black wool blend, buttons at the shoulder. Perhaps early 80's. Also a fabulous, awesome royal blue silk tie-neck blouse that is right in style and gorgeous but size 38, too small for my frame.

Keep as an investment of sorts, or sell (where? consign?) because I am in a ton of debt and could use the $$?

daria g (daria g), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Well, on The Bank of Mum and Dad they are always trying to get them to sell their fancy designer clothes, but they don't seem to get much money for them.

I am not a fashionista, but my advice would be if you are never going to wear these things, then sell them.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:13 (twenty years ago)

There are people who will sell stuff on your behalf on eBay. Of course they're going to take a percentage of the sale cost and probably pass the expenses on to you, but this will give online label maniacs a chance to bid up the prices.

Throw shit out. We won't tell God.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I know folks will sell for me - there's a place in the next neighborhood - but I don't think they'd bring what they're worth right now, from my knowledge of how sales have gone of late on that site. (People are not buying a lot, it's not the season.) I'm more wondering though whether these are likely to be investment pieces & should be held on to for that reason, even if I could pull in a couple hundred bucks now. Suzy, are you out there? Lauren?

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm a size 38! I can't offer any wisdom on if they'd be good investment pieces, but I might be able to take them off your hands if you do decide to get rid of them.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 04:05 (twenty years ago)

take photos, send them to me. i might buy them. for my, uh, girlfriend of course

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 06:43 (twenty years ago)

no really, send pix. i might buy them

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 06:44 (twenty years ago)

Consignment places are HORRIBLE - I never, ever take to the people who run them as there seems something pinched and mean about them. Any shop you sell them to will give you 30 to 50 per cent of what they are to be sold for but the top might do well at a vintage place.

Boutiquey vintage places are often good for this. I'll give you this example: today I reserved some virtually unworn Manolo Blahnik kitten-heel boots in a cool, newly-opened secondhand clothes/furniture 'guerrilla shop' because they were so cheap I had to. We know what these cost in shoe shops, right? I'm paying £100 and I am normally the stingiest fucking haggler in the universe.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 06:59 (twenty years ago)

they ARE horrible. i sold an awesome helmut lang jacket. for like 180, which meant i only got 90 bucks for it. which is only like 30 pounds. ugh. also sold a varvatos shirt for $80 (i got 40), and some ugly j lindberg shirt which i was lucky to pocket 25 for. so in other words, sell your stuff somewhere else

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 07:03 (twenty years ago)

Hmm.. That's a good idea, Suzy. I'll try calling up some boutiquey places in Boston, that's probably the nearest place to me to look. I didn't realize they took that much of a cut.

Phil, I will indeed send you pix pretty soon, if something happens to be your cup of tea let me know. What size do you wear? The dress is actually a size 42 or 44 (can't recall offhand), it's very basic, er.. I actually found it at a thrift & thought, I'll kick myself if I don't buy it. I have accumulated way too many clothes and now I'm weighing.. OK, on one hand some of this stuff is valuable, on the other, I hate having all this junk around and I gotta move within six months at the most.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 07:26 (twenty years ago)

oh wait no, i meant it. its not for me. im not an asian ladyboy. i swear. seriously really.

but me and my roommate have been doing some styling work for fashion editorials and wouldn't mind some vintage'y YSL and stuff.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 07:32 (twenty years ago)

how can i emphasize the fact that the dress is not for me, without sounding like "methinks thou doth protest too much".

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Methinks the ladyboy doth protest too much.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 07:39 (twenty years ago)

FINE FINE ME LOVE BIG AMERICAN BOOM BOOM STICK. SELL ME YOUR YSL RIVE GAUCHE DRESSES

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 07:44 (twenty years ago)

haha! phil, dude, is there anything else you and your roommate would like for your stylist collection? I was bummed out during the spring/summer & had a bad thriftshop habit which means I have an absolute ton of vintage around my little apartment.

the blouse is 1000x hotter than the dress. it kills me that the blouse doesn't fit me. and it's not even like I can pretend I'll drop ten pounds and make it fit, it's the proportions. arrgh.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 07:59 (twenty years ago)

Phil, who are you styling shoots for?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 08:10 (twenty years ago)

I've got a £350 (new) prada dress that I'm never going to fit into again, I'd love to be able to sell it & get some decent cash for it!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:48 (twenty years ago)

yes, stay away from consignment shops. you'll get ripped off. i'd try ebay with a reserve price for the items and see how it goes, or else just hang on to them. they shouldn't diminish in value, and it sounds like you'd be sick if you let them go for anything less than what they're worth.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 10:51 (twenty years ago)

Haha that was really me posting under Ed's login up there (accident) but the question still stands.

Consignment shops' owners are a seething nexus of mendacity and snobbishness. It does not translate into $4U.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:16 (twenty years ago)

(I don't even know what consignment shops are)!

Shabazz (hello chickens), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:20 (twenty years ago)

ha, suzy! i wondered about that post!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:21 (twenty years ago)

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:32 (twenty years ago)

50%, no bluddy way!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:36 (twenty years ago)

You would have wondered more if Ed appeared to ask if Phil was working for Butt, Index or Vice (although Phil appears to be doing sterling work on the butt and vice fronts without working for the named mags).

Did you scope the price I got on the boots? That's U$180. Not even my Pucci dress cost that much when I found it so I'm in the murky world of spending more on a single pair of shoes/boots than any other item I've ever had, but for secondhand, hence flux state.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Daria, I know you say you can't be bothered with Ebay but it is super fun, seriously. Give it some consideration - if you've got a digital camera then go for it!

(and on the subject, does anyone want to buy an orange men's Reiss sweater or 2 pairs of W32 L30 jeans?)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Suzy, would you fit into a UK10 (i know how tiny you are!!), wanna buy a black prada dress? ;-)
Mark - how baggy are the jeans, I can't tell?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Please, you people with your boys' jeans and Prada dresses, I just committed to £100 Manolo boots.

Pink, what season the Prada? I am UK 10 right now, and this is a heavy 10 today due to PMT.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:06 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of getting some boots.

From Shoe Express.

Shabazz (hello chickens), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Pink, I don't think they're particularly baggy but they're also not tight - they're my ex-flatmate's, not mine. They're nice though - certainly worth more than 99p :/

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I think they are... twenty pounds?

But I'm not sure.

I got some Shoe Express boots last year, and returned them in a week.

They weren't as nice out of the shop. In fact, they were yucky.

Shabazz (hello chickens), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Starry, go to Kate Kanzier in Leather Lane, it is my secret cheap-shoe weapon (they only look expensive). It's where I got yellow kitten heel ruched stripper stilettos in the sale for $10 and silver and black pairs of Mary Janes which were £25 each.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:16 (twenty years ago)

I shall NOTE this name!

Shabazz (hello chickens), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:17 (twenty years ago)

i want to go shopping.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Pink, what season the Prada? I am UK 10 right now, and this is a heavy 10 today due to PMT.
I got it for Christams 2001. It's black with a round neck, zip up the back & the length is just below the knee & the edges of the dress (as you look at it straight on) are slightly longer than the middle. It also has a fabric belt around the middle. Very classic looking & could be altered quite easily. I think it's gorgeous, but each to their own.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:22 (twenty years ago)

I think i would kill to go shopping with Suzy, she knows all the best places!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Pink, I only know about Kate Kanzier because it's on me frickin' doorstep, but it's good, it's where those funny Golae with the Chinoiserie live, and is a magnet for directional LCP students (who also shop at Best in Back Hill and the teeshirt section of Magma). About 2/3 of the shoes are totally plastique so the anti-cruelty brigade can go there too (Starry, I thought of Katie G).

Lauren, I want to go shopping but it cannot be done until next week. I will instruct the friendly fashion assistant at ESM to tidy away some details of sample sales which might be cheaper. I still need to LOSE my old trainers and get some decent black everyday lace-up shoes of some kind, or a suitable replacement for my Issey Miyake shoes. Ed thinks how could I possibly need more shoes.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago)

i think phil and our fannypack pal will be in town end of next week. that would be a great shopping party.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago)

suzy, that shop sounds pretty cool. i'll probably forget what it's called and ask you at least four times to remind me and then fall in love with it. just like chris. who still makes me amazingly happy and simplifies my hair life hugely.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:12 (twenty years ago)

hey, I'd like to take a look at pictures of the blouse/dress too!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Actually - I need some similar advice. For reasons I won't bore you with I've got to go out and get "gigging clothes", I've no idea what to get. I just don't DO clothes.

I look like this:-

And I sound like this:-
http://www.valentinerecords.co.uk/records.html
(scroll down til you get to the one with the kickass sleeve :))

Any ideas? Please God have some ideas because I have NONE.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:53 (twenty years ago)

oooh we get to play dressup with lynskey!

I would say an untucked oxford shirt would look very good on you, something vintage-looking if you can find it. You could top it off with a sweater if you wanted to look a little snuggly and twee.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

You would have wondered more if Ed appeared to ask if Phil was working for Butt, Index or Vice (although Phil appears to be doing sterling work on the butt and vice fronts without working for the named mags).

i LOVE butt magazine!!! anyways, its more my roommate that does the styling work - i just help out now and then putting together looks and getting stains out of junya watanabe coats before they get returned to bergdorf for full refund. just shot a story for russian jalouse, animal, and some miami magazine. forgot the name. like nicky style or something. and some test shots for models and stuff. nothing that huge.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago)

There are easier ways of getting clothes for shoots than maxing out your card even temporarily. You can imagine that I've never had to resort to this as a) not a stylist and b) most fashion companies would frankly debase themselves to appear in the magazine I work for so they...put out, shall we say? If you are here this coming week we can talk about it properly.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago)

xpost etc. I'll put up pictures when I get them. I just got home from a couple weeks out of town & can't find the camera right now. I've done the eBay thing, am just kind of burned out on it b/c people don't want to spend much $$ lately, and then there were a couple of massive headaches with rude buyers & now I have a lost package to deal with. Such a gigantic headache for so little compensation.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah, usually get stuff from showrooms, but the watanabe thing was for a spec and she didnt have any sort of letters from any magazines. im still fairly certain that i'll be in london in a week or so, so see you then! unless of course i don't go to london, in which case, see you next time!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I think the sailor look would be good. I look like this in lady clothes

That's me in front looking like Alyson Moyet. The other people are all incredibly dangerous and should not be approached.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I am instantly regretting posting that.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:07 (twenty years ago)

So much so that I removed it. Not for me, you understand, for the other people involved.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:14 (twenty years ago)

But my tits look great in that pic.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:15 (twenty years ago)

shit, the karl lagerfeld h&m collection has been available for 4.5 hours now. i better get to the store before it all sells out.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

isn't it appearing in London on the 18th? Or am I totally remembering the ad wrong?

Perhaps there will be some left when you arrive here, Phil.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago)

it was out today at 9am with free krispy kreme donuts. my friend who did some of the PR just called me and said it was madhouse. like skinny gay guys clawing over the last size 36 jacket. i hope there's still stuff left.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

bernard, go to h&m and get everything from the karl lagerfeld collection you can. it'll be cheap. but then you might look like interpol. if thats what you want

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, Phil, that looks like an outing worth pursuing.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:24 (twenty years ago)

shit I totally forgot about the Karl Lagerfeld H&M thing.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Ally, we might have your back here.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:37 (twenty years ago)

The only couture clothing I've ever put on were from Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. I have no idea how we came into possession of them for the weeks we had them but I have fond memories, particularly of an electric blue velvet coat that resembled something off the Sgt. Pepper album cover. I wore it constantly, despite 110F weather, until we had to give them back. I have a soft spot for Lagerfeld ever since!

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:43 (twenty years ago)

what a dud. i went out in the rain and they had some size 36 suit jackets left but they were still a little too big for me, and the smallest suit pants they had were 34. 28,30,32 all sold out. but since i was in the area, i stopped by louis vuitton to try on the black bomber jacket with white mink hood for $4600 and pretended that i was was actually considering buying it. then went to dior and tried on one of the super-fitted suits, but i think the sales guy was fairly certain that i didn't have $2500 in my bank account for a jacket.

ally, where did you get it from and why did you have to give it back??

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I just finished an article for ESM about the No. 5 advert, it's out about now (issue 250). Two separate viewings produced two separate 50ml eau de parfum freebies (and Chanel popcorn at film screening).

Phil, you'll catch this on the 18th which is also the Issue 250 party. See Lauren for details.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago)

I am going to go shopping for $4600 jackets next time I'm somewhere they stock them.

is karl lagerfield good?

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

phil, we got it from Chanel directly (though I still haven't figured out why they were charitable enough to give these things to a college newspaper for a fashion shoot). We had to return it because they were on loan. The fashion shoot we were styling for never panned out, btw, the resulting photos resembled "pimps and hos" waaaaaay too much (it was the season where everything they put on the runway was electric colored velvet and corsets and giant hats) and we decided they'd think we were making fun of them.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:21 (twenty years ago)

No, Ally, no offense would be taken - that would be known as 'a moment' in fashion terms. Plus duh they like know student publications' fashion editorial is going to be that bit combative. At work I saw the Graduate Fashion Week stuff because they were running it and it was pretty extreme even by my standards.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Phil, you'll catch this on the 18th which is also the Issue 250 party. See Lauren for details.

rats. my flight departs on the 18th, but doesnt get in until noon on the 19th. oh well. i'll see about coming a day earlier though.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago)

i dunno suzy. my friend used this as-four bead necklace from spring/summer 2005 in a shoot, and his stylist put it together all upside-down/backwards/inside-out and they got an unpleasant voicemail once they saw the photos.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Haha the thing is, Suzy, I don't think we ever really planned on running the piece--we just wanted to parade around in the clothing. The photos were really more embarassing to us than I'm sure they would've been to Chanel (who probably never would've even looked at them).

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:39 (twenty years ago)

It's really nice that everything Lagerfield designed for H&M is black and white. Since everyone who is in a 100 mile radius or knows someone in a 100 mile radius of H&M is going to own pieces of the collection, leaving your house without running into 10 people wearing a piece of your clothing is going to be harder than it was before, But at least you can blend it in better.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:42 (twenty years ago)

Read Cosmopolitan by Toby Cecchini for a pretty good beatdown of As Four, kicked out of *Passerby* for being pretentious.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:44 (twenty years ago)

haha, i was going to dress up as h3nry from as four for halloween. comb-over and togas and glitter and a fake circle-bag made of cardboard.
