"Weird end of the season for Bill Maher who witnessed his own trainwreck of a show. It finished with uber-blogger Andrew Sullivan massaging his own ass for what seemed like an eternity during the credit roll. . . . Sullivan, a favorite of Mahers then went on at the end of the show to grab his own butt and squeeze it through much of the credit roll. Weird, weird show. Great for parties."

". . .why was Andrew Sullivan – there's no polite way to put this -- rubbing his own ass, in full view of the cameras and for what seemed like an eternity? (This screen capture fails to do justice to the sheer duration of the event.)"

Hahah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:55 (twenty years ago)

I turned it off during the Alan Simpson bit, which was totally uncomfortable to watch. I've got it on tivo though in case I feel like beeing even more skeeved out, thanks for the tip.

First person who finds video link gets a cookie!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago)

I suspect his blog explanation will say something about Catholic theology and marriage.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:58 (twenty years ago)

I checked to see if he had an explanation, but no dice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he was wearing a wire.

jushinthunderliger (deangulberry), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago)

It was a good show, actually. Andrew Sullivan was something approaching sane, which I guess he has been for a few months now.

Kenan (kenan), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I mean, apart from the ass thing.

Kenan (kenan), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Edging to sanity, not there yet. May never happen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Wait, didn't he basically accuse Noam Chomsky of "bilking" the country for millions of dollars in appearance fees for college lectures?!?! How is that sane??!?! I'll bet he doesn't accuse Anne Coulter of doing the same!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:02 (twenty years ago)

The Noam thing is part of the oddball constellation! I'm just glad it finally dawned on him that the Iraq thing was a fuckup, even if he only focuses on how it was handled rather than the fact that it even exists.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, well you can't expect from these guys, Ned. David Brooks seems in a similar sometimes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

similar QUANDRY, ahem.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago)

A good place for them to be. Especially as it gets more problematic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Not that Dem politicians are saints in this regard either. Robert McNamara I'm LOOKING at you!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:09 (twenty years ago)

cookie please

John Cocktolstoy, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago)

That is odd - though actually he could be looking for his wallet.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Who the hell is Andrew Sullivan? He can't be that prominent if I've never heard of him.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:06 (twenty years ago)

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I gathered that. But why do I care what he has to say?

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:12 (twenty years ago)

It's an American thing (even though he's a Brit). Professional contrarian. Gay Catholic conservative. Currently my canary in the coalmine for watching when the right's internal contradictions start to tear itself apart (after he goes, I figure more will follow).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:16 (twenty years ago)

I think Sullivan in that photo was just stuffing his "arguments" against Chomsky back from whence they came.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh he totally pissed me off re: Chomsky. Not just the "Oh, he makes millions from his lectures" bullshit, but the way he took one little thing NC said out of context to extrapolate that NC thinks Saddam is good and the US is evil after NC himself even said that the world is better off without Saddam in power. Typical rw meathead.

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Meathead was lw.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:45 (twenty years ago)

typical rw Archie, then

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:46 (twenty years ago)

This must be the explanation

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

"for what seemed like an eternity"? all of 2 seconds after he stood up (judging by that video). Sullivan's "Virtually Normal" is a great book. He's wierdly unattractive now though (he used to be very handsome).

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:59 (twenty years ago)

From today:

SLATE HITS BOTTOM: Yep, they have an entire article on the fact that at the end of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" (transcript here), I got up and readjusted my power-glutes. Slow news day? It was the first thing my boyfriend pointed out to me when I called him after the show. The reason? Slate demands an answer. It itched.

You don't have to prove that your opponent eats fetuses and rapes baby seals. You just have to make him deny it.
