Post yr memories of Crazy Horse here. Unfortunately the one that immediately springs to mind for me is EH singing "Liverpool are magic, Everton are tragic" at the civic reception for LFC's Euro champs in '77. He did apologise.

John Reid? No it's Princess Anne...

:(

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Another memory - Emlyn uncharacteristically rampaging through the Swedish defence to slam a shot against a post in an otherwise drab goalless friendly International in '79.

The most successful British club captain of all time?

He was a buffoon, but he had a lovely smile.

And who can forget his part in this immortal team?

He'll always mean a Question of Sport to me. Him and Bill Beaumont (weirdly I saw a Bill Beaumont lookalike on my street on Sunday evening). A photo taken from an odd angle in the picture round, and Emlyn twisting his head upside down to get a better view. That is how I'll remember him. A golden time when I got both mystery guests almost every week.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

And me madchen! Very sad indeed!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I know Hughes was a rather irritating little Thatcherite, but he was still the guy who lifted LFC's first European Cup and this news makes me incredibly sad.

The last couple of weeks have been fucking appalling.

The most successful British club captain of all time?

Liverpool's most successful period was after Hughes

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

LGE CHAMPIONSHIP 72/73, 75/76, 76/77, 78/79
FA CUP 73/74
EUROPEAN CUP 76/77, 77/78
UEFA CUP 72/73, 75/76

Is pretty good, no? Although he wasn't captain for all those years. He stands in my mind as the paradigmatic LFC captain much more than, eg, Phil Thommo.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He was definitely successful, no doubt about that!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Who preceded him as Liverpool captain? I suspect he lifted at least six of those trophies above.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Was it Tommy Smith?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Might it have been Larry Lloyd (offloaded to Coventry [?] by Paisley shortly after he took over from Shankly)? Was Ian Callaghan ever captain?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Callaghan - too self-effacing. Larry Lloyd to Forest surely?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Callaghan - too self-effacing

Not an accusation that could ever be levelled at Emlyn!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Hughes took over from Smith when Paisley took over from Shankly in 74?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Turns out Lloyd was sold to Coventry in '74 but signed to Forest in '76 by Cloughie.

I think JtN might be right.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Smith was a bit of a dodgy character to have as a captain perhaps? Mind you, Billy Bremner was Leeds (and Scotland!) captain at the time.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

He used to do 'motivational' speaking after he retired. For some reason I can't fathom, my mum was at one of these events. She said Emlyn was drenched in sweat at the end.

Did he ever score for England? I remember him hitting the bar once (the same game where Wilkins threw the ball at the referee?).

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite EH memory: He scored a screamer against Ipswich (I think) and celebrated by running towards the camera and yelling Fuuuuuckin' eeeeelll!

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

A part of my childhood revolved around his weekly, stupid, infectious laugh. RIP.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

For me, he will always be wearing a pale blue sweater, perhaps with a darker blue stripe across it, and perhaps a yellow shirt beneath, in a pastelhued or perhaps grey studio, opposite Bob Wilson, on a still fraying video tape from a Saturday lunchtime very early in 1987, going through every FA Cup tie forthcoming that weekend and mentioning, unforgettably as you can see, a "fairly poo-or Chelsea si-ide at the moment".

the bluefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember if you set the shirt colours to pink on Emlyn Hughes International Soccer it looked like they were all playing in the nude? Heady times.
