I used to be fine with the idea of legalising hash but my flatmate smokes it every night and he's braindead...

Walks like a neanderthal, no brains left, seems to struggle to speak... hmmm. Not so sure this is a good thing.

SuperChantel., Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

is your flatmate encino man?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe he was braindead anyway?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe. Stoners are such assholes anyway. And they never clean up after themselves.

Super.Chantel, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps the asshole-ness and uncleanliness should be what's made illegal

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I love when people take extreme cases and generalize...just as all drinkers aren't sloppy, all smokers aren't "braindead"...all comes down to moderation, my friend

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Take it from a guy who's username is a Sun Ra reference!

Just kidding; it's a really good point. Everybody handles substances differently, depending on pre-existing personality traits.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i would legalise weed but not hash

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

who cares if he's brain dead? It's his birth right to become so if he chooses. what, next anyone who doesn't work 40 hours a week will be put in the pen? MY GOD MAN

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, it's been far too long since I've scored some hash and/or weed :(

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Weed stopped agreeing with me a few years ago so I no longer smoke it, but a large proportion of my friends use it regularly and none of them could be desribed as braindead by any means. Some of them start spouting shit or stop wanting to go out and do fun things when they're stoned, but, as Oops said, they're perfectly within their rights to behave like that if that's how they want to behave.

BUT SMOKING WEED REMOVES YOUR ABILITY TO CHOOSE WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(nb I don't actually believe that.)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Weed is perfect for when you're bored.

Are weed & hash different things?

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Hash is a concentrated form of the same drug. I forget how its made. It makes the THC more potent, but it doesn't make the weed better -- doesn't make it taste any better, doesn't give you that lucid, crispy kind bud high. It's just pot, but a lot of it.

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of the stupidest, most annoying people I've ever met were big stoners, and some of the smartest, most interesting and alive people I've ever had the pleasure of being friends with were even bigger stoners.

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

BUT SMOKING WEED REMOVES YOUR ABILITY TO CHOOSE WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU.

YEAH, THAT'S WHY ALL THOSE FUCKING POTHEADS LISTEN TO NOTHING BUT PHISH AND SHITTY JAM BANDS!!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you need to untangle the idea of what is right and good from what is or should be legal. Making himself brain dead is not good for your friend. You see that rightly. Your friend is buying a lot of trouble for himself by acting this way. But responding to his problem by throwing him in prison seems like a particularly inapt solution.

I see no problem with punishing addicts who steal because they are thieves. I see no problem with punishing addicts who commit vehicular manslaugher because they have taken a life. But punishing addicts for being addicts is wrongheaded in my view. Treating them for addiction seems more to the point.

You just can't stop people from wanting to numb themselves or stimulate themselves or aggrandize themselves or delude themselves with drugs by threatening them or punishing them. You can see how well it has solved the drug problem in the USA. We've been ratcheting up the penalties and enforcement for decades and its as bad as it ever was.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe you oughta tell him to ease up on the geef instead of telling some internet strangers you want him thrown in jail?

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Aimless OTM - throwing people in prison for weed is counterproductive as prison can be the gateway to heroin (which prisoners wind up using because pot is testable for three weeks and smack's three days).

Here's the thing with hashish/cannabis resin: it's cut with all kinds of shite including human skin from a number of hands rubbing it and there's usually a few interesting pieces of Third World cellophane embedded in your order. Think of that coating your lungs. Bleah. Hash is NASTY in the main unless it's charas - the oily, pliant dark one - since London is usually awash in quite shitty Leb/rocky. It's a bad day on my block if my friend says 'actually, there's pollen' when unable to offer other varieties. THAT'S NOT POLLEN. Ew.

We have started calling weed Dubya around these parts in an effort to consume less of it.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't let the black metal guys find out there's human skin in that stuff.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

burning a stick of dubya sounds great fun though.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i got some free weed in glastonbury because these girls took ages charging up their mobile phones in the mobile phones charging place, and so they said i could have the bit of grass that's left on the table from their rolling up.

it was mostly tobacco though.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Somehow I knew Aimless' post was his from the first couple lines. Totally OTM. Like I said, it is (or should be) the right of every human to completely fuck up and waste their life if they so choose.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the weird thing is, none of the stoners I know demonstrate the classic stoner traits. They are all responsible, reasonably hard-working, cerebral and reliable ppl.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 11 November 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Agh! I forgot about that despicable European habit of mixing tobacco in with the weed. Tell me you all in the UK don't do that shit.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

For real when my old roommate from Norway rolled one up I almost passed out and I was like WTF but then I realized it was from the nicotine cause I had never had a cigarette before.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

uh I mean the majority of you lot, since i guess it's obvious from your anecdote that at least some of you do.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, you gotta fly down here and toke with me matey =)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 11 November 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the European way is to mix with tobacco, because it burns better. We call this a spliff. Americans are also culturally stupefied/annoyed when they see a European doing a massive Bogart because they forget the mitigating tobacco (it would be rude to do this with neat grass wherever in the world, but whatever).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 11 November 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I have it mixed... its just too sweet/strong without, for me.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 11 November 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

YEAH, THAT'S WHY ALL THOSE FUCKING POTHEADS LISTEN TO NOTHING BUT PHISH AND SHITTY JAM BANDS!!!

-- Eisbär (llamasfu...), November 10th, 2004.

that's really the only convincng case i've ever heard for keeping it illegal.

Mr. Vas Djifrens (byzantum), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I don't have a stoner aesthetic. No carvings, no leaves, no Floyd, no ARGH ARGH tapestries or thirdy worlde items of any kind - apart from the leaves that's the Katesthetic (she knows I hate tapestries, oh the irony Kate does not smoke). No airbrushing either. Mustn't forget about airbrushing.

Here, stoners listen to dub, not boring shitty jam bands. Our version of jam bands is called 'pub rock' and what do people in pubs drink?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 11 November 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I do, Trayce! Some day. It *will* happen!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes when I've got no weed nor hash, I can listen to dub and get high by audio proxy.
