That's the reference library for you. Basically it doubles as Ry High's library and . Try using Robarts over by UofT.

That's nothing, Glasgow's Mitchell Library has over 2 million books, and you can't take out any. Reference libraries are just a big fat tease.

i kind of wanted to talk about what makes a reference library and what makes a circulating collection

The big desks and comfy chairs are some of the best things about the British Library. And the little light that comes on on your desk when your book is ready to be picked up.

anthony, are you confused as to which is which? or maybe, are declaring a dud on reference libraries?

When I was at uni I loved going to the (reference) library and requesting the oldest books I could, just so I could get to wear the white gloves. I don't have a white glove fetish, I just loved being able to touch a book printed in 1520 or whenever. Reading 500 year old books made me feel so fucking peaceful.

ok, lets say i am mr reference libraian (sp), what makes me say--hey all of this spivak nonesense, we shouldnt let everyday ordinary people see it.

lets stick it over here--why this desc. ?
i mean beanz old books are going to be fucked if they circulate and people tear apart art books or censor sex books--so i get that, but what about everything else.

Because that particular library is geared for high volume. Lots of students looking for the same few books. By not allowing check out the same book can be used by two or three students in one day.
