they're only asking for *trouble*.

what kind of air conditioning is it? the one at my old office was this crazy "climate control" system that turns on heating when the office gets too cold!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:20 (twenty years ago)

I hate air con, it swallows up energy and dries the skin, unless you live somewhere really hot, when i guess its o.k. The problem is that aior conditioning in conjunction with the automobile has allowed (not exclusively) Americans to colonise bits of desert etc, which should have remained uninhabited. Now they eit inside, chewing up electricity watching soaps and the world pays the price. Whats wrong with putting a fan on and drinking lots of fluids. People seem to think that sweating is a bad thing, its a beutiful, natural part of life.

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:21 (twenty years ago)

I hate air con with a passion but if we didn't have it on in our rack room we'd probably overheat and have to shut down within 20 minutes.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:51 (twenty years ago)

Obviouasly it has its merits, I just think that to maintain our species in the future (and tro protect many others) we need to get get fermiliar wih being uncomfortable.

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I am uncomfortable! I'm fucking freezing!

I am now at war with my office manager. The entire office is sitting here with jackets on. She has just said "how can you be cold, its blowing at 23 degrees?" I DON'T CARE HOW WARM IT TECHNICALLY IS, EVERYONE HERE IS VISIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Dude, point out the wind-chill factor to her. Then knife her in the guts.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Do you not have radiators? Maybe w/out the AC you'd all be BLOCKS OF ICE

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:10 (twenty years ago)

on the plus side, it's making the outside air warmer!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:10 (twenty years ago)

and (sorry cannot resist)

man, my whole uni to thread. the best one is having the air con on, then swtiching the heating on to counter act the effects of the air con (or vice versa). then open the window/door becasue "its a bit stuffy in here"

aaaaaaaaaarghhh!!!! in russia, they have to wear fur coats in doors becasue heating turns itself off! in the west, weh ave to wear coats indoors, because we voluntarily make it cold inside in winter
god this is so retarded.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I knew you'd understand.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:53 (twenty years ago)

What drives me nuts is people who insist on putting on the heating when our Rack room can heat the entire building several times over. I'd prefer forced draft cooling though but this building isn't set up right.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago)

A university with air conditioning?!?!

The temperature in my office depends entirely on whether the sun is shining. On a bright day, the solar gain means we swelter, but at all other times we freeze. At least from October to April we have radiators on. Most people in my office prefer to work in short sleeves though. I mean, WTF? This is November, it's jumper weather.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:26 (twenty years ago)

we've got air conditioning, but that's cos of the archives. The stores properly air-con, with temp and humidity control, and temps at 18c, the office can't be too much hotter, cos the change in temp/humidity would be bad for the archives that come out of store, so it's 21/22c, and 40% RH.

It's worse in summer though, do you dress for the tube where you want as little clothing as possible, the weather outside for the walk to and from station and lunchtime, or the office, in which case you need tights and jumpers and boil to death whenever you set foot outside.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:40 (twenty years ago)

I hate it when it lovely & sunny outside & absolutely freezing inside the office.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:42 (twenty years ago)

The defence must be because it isn't air conditioning! It is "climate control".

3underscore (___), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago)

It in furiates me that we create 20 odd kW of heat and then expend a whole heap more energy removing that.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:46 (twenty years ago)

I have a fleece in my drawer for cold days - you could have one for summer days, Vicky.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I do! I have two in the office that I leave here, a lightweight one and a heavy one

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:20 (twenty years ago)

what I need to do is have a good supply of tights too, as it's the bare legs that's the killer in summer!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

What gets me is why there seems to be this idea that buildings should be 30 degrees inside when it's 5 degrees outside and 15 inside when it's 30 out.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I always forget in the summer & stupidly wear sandles! grrrrr

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago)

air conditioning in winter vs. roommates who don't understand how heat works and turn it up to 80 degrees before heading out for the day while you're still sleeping so you wake up and think you have a fever or something. air conditing in general is for wimps though.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

How about a nice blanket to go across your knees?

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:06 (twenty years ago)

When I was a kid and my family used to make long drives to visit all the family at Christmas time, my dad would always blare the A/C in the car to keep himself awake. What a jerk.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard of any place that uses air conditioning in the winter. Such madness!

However, at my old job they started turning down the heat so that it was barely on just to save money during the winter.
