Chilled Juice in the supermarket: why?

so, another supermarket question.....although this is pan-supermarkets so hopefully my foul bourgious tendencies wont be exposed like in the morrisons thread.*

In the supermarket today, i decided to open up this question that has been bugging me for many years now, to a wider audience. namely:

why are there two sets oif juices in UK supermarkets?
- Chilled, or
- Just on the shelves, ie room temperature, normally in their wholesale packaging boxes.

why are the former so much more expensive than the latter? is it for the cost of running a fridge?

do they think we are stupid? do they think we dont realse that we could juts buy the standard juice at a reduced rate, and then put it in the fridge, to achieve the same effect?

is the market for the "i must have 2 litres of cold orange juice right NOW!" market that big?

can anyone shed any light on this mystery?

i mean, i guerss if they stock it so, it must be becuase people buy it, which begs the question: why?

* well, i have come to acknowledge that morrisons staff are really helpful and knowledgeable about where everything is, i suppose they have to be given the layout is so awful.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Yes, we think you are stupid.

Safeway Steve, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't think this is a mystery. People will buy the cold orange juice because it's cold. I mean... it's cold. It's already cold. You could drink it now if you wanted. Of course you won't, but that's missing the point, and the point is that it's already cold. What don't you understand?

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand why they sell bread. I mean, they sell the yeast and the flour and sugar and so on, and they charge so much more for the bread. Do they really think we're so stupid that we won't just buy the ingredients and go home and make the bread?

I've never noticed that big of a price difference in hot or cold juice. I shop at Kroger in the US.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

The chilled juices are less processed than the shelf-stable versions, and therefore require more careful handling. And then the costs of this handling are passed on to you the consumer.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

More preservatives in shelf packs is the simple answer, apart from sunny D of course where their oh so clever marketing men realised that people will pay a premium for a chilled product thinking it's good stuff. Same with Soy milk, which doesn't need chilling, but people wouldn't buy when ambient.

oh and you know those scrummy fresh cream cakes? They used to be frozen.

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:11 (twenty years ago)

It's like the stack of warm cases of beer. Sure it's on sale for 8 bucks, but it's warm! I'm not buying beer because I might want a beer later, I'm buying beer because I do want a beer very soon.

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:12 (twenty years ago)

is the market for the "i must have 2 litres of cold orange juice right NOW!" market that big?

I'm a key constituent of this market. Shopping makes me thirsty.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

shelf stuff is generall pasteurised too and made from concentrate.

also - no scrummy bits

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

"Impulse Purchases" are where supermarkets have traditionally made up for taking losses on bulk inventory.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:16 (twenty years ago)

STOP SHOPLIFTING IN BULK, PEOPLE!

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:24 (twenty years ago)

ok so thats my first question answered, so whast with fucking "concentrate", whats that shit all about?
so every juice on the shelf is from concentrate, or is stated as such, except cloudy apple juice. so is that less processed and full o shit?

also, what the fuck is ham that is reformed from pork!??!! i spent ages loking at packs of ham that were either "reformed" (cheapest) "formed" (mid range) or no mention at all ("the best")

along with the prograem on starwberries that just aired about polytunnels and eating fucked up strawberries, i am freaked out about food. when was thee point that we stoppe eating food that was made of,well, food, and thought we should pump fucking weird bad shit into ourselves?

ps yes i am stuopid, although i think there is a slight diffeence between making a loaf of bread and slinging some shit in the fridge.

this may also explains osme shopping habit differences: i generally go to the supermarket once a week (cos its sort of out of town, and i have to drive), so buyign exclusively shit that i want to eat in the next hour or so doesnt make that much sense....

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:40 (twenty years ago)

ham that is reformed is made from offcuts, scraps, and other 'reclaimed' parts that are then mushed up and pressed.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:42 (twenty years ago)

juice using concentrate - it's a lot easier and cheaper to transport concentrated juice from overseas and then dilute it again than it is freshly juiced. I can't say that all shelved juices are concentrate, but all the orange juices are.

The point we stopped eating food that was made of food was when producers were able to cut corners to make prices cheaper and consumers lapped it all up and began expecting cheap prices without looking into how they were making things so cheap.

One thing it has meant though is we only have to do one shop a week, rather than every other day...

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:46 (twenty years ago)

There's chilled juice in the supermarket / I can no longer shop happ-pil-lee...

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

hey ambrose, you ever eat sausage rolls?

and you want real food all the time? don't go to the supermarket

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago)

so every juice on the shelf is from concentrate, or is stated as such, except cloudy apple juice. so is that less processed and full o shit?

Most shops sell freshly squeezed orange juice as well in the chilled cabinet, no? In an opaque plastic bottle with a screw top?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 23:59 (twenty years ago)

hey ambrose, you ever eat sausage rolls?

nope. ever since i ahd to squeeze out the shit from a pipe in the bakery.....

don't go to the supermarket

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 11 November 2004 06:50 (twenty years ago)

I am reminded of a joke that the Austrian comedian Alfons Hader tells a lot: "Do you know what Knackwurst is made out of? The leftover bits from Leberkäse. And what's Leberkäse made out of? The leftover bits from Knackwurst. It goes on this way eternally."

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 11 November 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago)

That's really much more clever than the jokes about wieners being made from lips and assholes or cows' eyes, dogs' heads, old phone books, and WIENER FLAVOUR.

That makes me feel sick Porkpie.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard of warm juice or beer selling for less than cold ones in the states--in fact, I think the idea would probably be laughed down. Oh well, different strokes...

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

It's crazy, the same long life, from concentrate juice selling for 10p more in the fridge than in the aisle. A disgraceful waste of energy and proof that thre is nothing truly stupid that we won't fall for.

Ed (dali), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
ambrose swears a lot in this thread. and before the watershed as well.

i'm not really sure what i'm doing in this thread, i was actually looking for artichokes. i blame the lighting

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 6 January 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

this thread was based on confusion, anger and ignorance*. these three things often result in swearing. the original question became redundant very quickly.

i probably have 10 potential ILX threads thrown up every day in my mind, most of them nonsense like this. i just dont post any of them, due to not being bothered, deciding hat they are stupid, or just forgetting - except for a few that get through, like this.

what will you do with those artichokes?

* i am not claiming to not be ignorant, confused or angry on occasion any more. not?!

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

i dont know, i just want to start having more artichokes with things

on 2nd jan. morrisons was closed, and i went to waitrose. i bought the expensive juice there, i got pink grapefruit (which i am coming round to now, i always preferred normal grapefruit before), and apple with cranberry.

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

I don;t think I've ever had a non-pink grapefruit juice. In fact I think I'll go have some now! num num

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 7 January 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 7 January 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

im having a pint of water and two bananas

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 7 January 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

i only buy 'not from concentrate' juice now. what's that about?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Saturday, 7 January 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Concentrat juices made by juicing, then reducing in water content, freezing and shipping and then reconstituting near the point of sale.

Not from concentrate juices are simply pasteurised. (sometimes frozen)

Freshly Squeezed is simply squeezed chilled and shipped.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 7 January 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Asda does LOVELY juice for £2.50 for 4 litre cartons. Pear and blackcurrant is just astonishing.

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 7 January 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

ten years pass...

this thread was based on confusion, anger and ignorance*.
