Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 11 November 2004 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 November 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago)

'I Hear A New World' makes me want to kill folk

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 11 November 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago)

i hate those blue fuckers

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 11 November 2004 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I've been coerced into tagging along to it twice. (for free, obv.) The first time, I thought it was complete fucking dud. The second time, however, I thought it was only major dud.

There is probably about 10 minutes' worth of entertainment in there.

The Boston troupe just started a new show besides "Tubes". I saw "Tubes" three times and by the third time I wanted to murder them all, but before then I would have said classic. The entire conceit is appealing to me.

I've never seen them. It's no Stomp then, is it? Or Blast? Or Please Bring in the Noise and the Funk?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

It's much weirder. "Tubes" is abasically all about how much can you entertain an audience by being a big blue creepy manbot.

I saw the Chicago troupe. I say they are a mild classic, based on three factors:
1. C'mon, the show is pretty fun, even if they overarching "concept" doesn't really make any sense.
2. They give jobs to a lot of out-of-work drummers from old indie bands.
3. There's a portion of the show where they play parts of all these classic rock and metal songs, and someone (who may have been part of the crew, ie, it may have been staged, but I honestly couldn't tell) yelled "Freebird!" and they instantly broke into a note-perfect rendition of Freebird.

#3 - they do that every show.

It's your autobiography!

One of the best gags on the season premiere of Arrested Development the other day was when Buster (I'm pretty sure that's who it was) found a poster for a Blue Man Group audition and thought it was the name of a support group for depressed men.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:10 (twenty years ago)

(It was actually David Cross's character, Dr. Tobias Funke)

Those Blue Men and their Group have crushed my soul.

They have a few "spontaneous" gags like that .. but still, they're clever.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

(ha ha, right, thanks Nick!)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

(Oh, I remember now, he was out looking for ladies.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I know nothing about them apart from the Intel adverts. However, it appears they are a troupe of mimes who decided that miming in whiteface would only make them the targets of derision, so they adopted the exciting, edgy, fabulous idea of being mimes in blueface!
