Who is the worst TV character ever?

Chandler Bing. It's like the writers thought "Hey, let's write ourselves into the scripts, seeing as how we're all so lovable people", and so you get this awkward "Here comes the funny..." routine played out by a man with no comic timing and ever less in the way of funny lines.

Tom from Daria may have been worse though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Scrappy Doo

kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago)

I think Doms right on this one.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago)

So is kingfish.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago)

too harsh on Chandler in my view. and nobody in Daria is bad, it's unpossible.

i can't pick Roy Clark characters because they are actually very strong and well defined (Comp, Hyacinth Bucket etc.) tho i usually can't stand to watch them.

i think i'll go out on a limb and say human: everyone in Hollyoaks
and animated: Homer Simpson (00s version)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Potsie...what was his point?

And that Oliver fucker from the Brady Bunch. Clumsy asshole.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Thermoman from My Hero.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 11 November 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Potsie was a DREN though!

Jim Belushi's character on According to Jim...i'm so sick of the "stupid fat fuck married to a beleagured hot chick" show....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

whats a DREN/DRIN?

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Joanie had a crush on Potsie, and decided he was the opposite of a nerd. I'll let your imagination fill in the rest. Sexy results ensued.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Oooh....he serenaded her in his Warren Weber voice heh.....

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

My two favourite shows - The Sopranos and Six Feet Under - both have characters who make me cringe/grind my teeth whenever they appear (Janice and Billy). But in both cases, a certain amount of that is intentional and beautifully written annoyance, so perhaps it shouldn't count.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Larry- Three's Company.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

that cleaner guy in corrie who they've never given a plotline to, except for one stupid one where he saved some guy who had a heart attack and then did a drunken business negotiation with him. they wrote him into the script, yet he remains permanently on the margins because he's so banal.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Rico from Six Feet Under.

Every character on Lost who isn't Claire.

And Jonathan Kent, Lana Lang, Pete Ross, and Chloe Sullivan on Smallville.

Every character on The Gilmore Girls except Lane.

Connor on Angel.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Selwyn Froggit. He used to make me cry when I was a child. I could never understand why everyone was always mean to the retarded man. And Frank Spencer. Jesus, I hated him so much. What the hell was ever funny about him?
I like Chandler.
And that cleaner guy is gone from Corrie now, Kilian. He bought someone's van and asked Big Eileen if she'd go around Europe with him. She declined.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I liked Larry. I always hated Jose on Three's Company.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

dudes, GODZUKI!!!

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Wolf Blitzer

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Dawn from Buffy, hands down. I get her purpose in Season 5 (as the key), but it's like they're stuck with her afterwards. It'd be OK if she didn't talk or have whole episodes centered around her. She has one schtick: everyone treats me like a kid so that pisses me off.

alex in montreal, Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind Dawn, because my sister has the same schtick. Thus, I find her realistic.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I always think that's where Buffy fell down for me. Given that Dawn wasn't real, and any of the feelings that the others had for her were fake, why would it have been such a terrible thing for her to die?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Ally McBeal.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

God, yes. The mere sight of that bug-eyed waif makes me want to vomit.

T-roy (will), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Wilbur Post of Mr. Ed. He was constantly getting into trouble and then following the advice of a horse. His character could have been played by a settee.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Not only was her character awful on TV, but lazy journalists convinced themselves that she represented some sort of new take on feminism, or that she was an example of the modern woman or some such, so you had to read or hear about her even if you didn't watch the show.

x-post Ha ha, a settee!

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Marilyn (?) the normal one on The Munsters. I could never understand why she was hanging around all these FREAKS. Even if they were related...

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Mike "Meathead" Stivic on All in the Family. I know, he was just there to set up Archie, but good god was he annoying and brutally unfunny. It's a real testament to the writers, Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton that this show was able to overcome the combined crimes against comedy of Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers.

briania (briania), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Chandler Bing isn't even the worst character on Friends. Step forward Mr Ross Geller. He's a like a parody of something that doesn't even exist. No human being can really be like Ross, can they?

Secondary nomination: Karen MacDonald off Coronation Street.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Chandler Bing is SOOOO not the worst TV character ever! (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Elmo from Sesame Street.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Dora from Dora the Explorer is probably worse.

"YEAAAAHH! YOU DID IT! YEAAAAH!"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

i realize he is not a "character" but the host of fear factor should be stoned to death.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa OTM about Ross. Phoebe annoys me rigid these days too.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:29 (twenty years ago)

oh, how about olivia from cosby? i hate that fakey cute kid crap. rudy was much cooler because she didn't have to try that hard.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh, now that Emily has broke down the 'reality show host' barrier, let me suggest TY from EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago)

maybe ty and the fear factor ass could stone EACH OTHER til the first one died or was hideously disfigured in a new reality show "FEAR THE EXTREME MAKEOVER FACTOR".

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Well, if you're going to go there, then look no further than While You Were Out's Maria Strasser (I think is her name, which I only know because people in my house used to talk tirelessly about how horrible she was.)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

or maybe it was Theresa Strasser. Or Marcia Strassman.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

the friends episode(s?) where ross starts having temper fits over people stealing his sandwiches is one of the worst, most embarrassing plotlines on any sitcom, ever.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh good God, Begs has the right idea.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago)

hand down, most annoying, started fast-forwarding when she's on-screen is THE MOM FROM MY SO-CALLED LIFE. she is the most self-obsessed, annoying character to the point where I cringe on the couch and get really mad.

scout (scout), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago)

andrea zuckerman on 90210. boring and old, she was.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:55 (twenty years ago)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

x-post
hahaha! after the first season she looked like one of the teachers. and luke was looking pretty long in the tooth towards the end, too. I would've killed for sideburns like that in high school.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Hyacinth sodding Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances.

Wesley Crusher and Deanna Troi from Star Trek - The Next Generation, and most of the characters from Voyager and Enterprise.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:24 (twenty years ago)

OMG, I can't believe no-one has mentioned KIM BAUER yet!!!

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Damon Wayans in 'My Wife And Kids'. I don't remember if he's called Damon Wayans in it, I think he might be called 'Steve' or 'Michael' or something - the more I think about it, the more likely it seems that he's called Michael - but BY CHRIST is he annoying. The entire point of every episode is 'Damon Wayans is a really good dad'. One episode the daughter's best friend is pregnant. She doesn't want to talk to her parents. Daughter: "You should talk to my dad." FOR FUCK'S SAKES. Plus, he appears to get all the jokes in the script too. (Not "all the good jokes", please note. There aren't any good jokes, unless you think Damon Wayans mocking his son for being short constitutes a good joke. In which case, you are Damon Wayans).

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Every character on The Gilmore Girls except Lane.

!!! !!! !!! Every character on Gilmore Girls is awesome except Lane. She's Spin Magazine Incarnate.

adam (adam), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago)

She's the only one who doesn't chirp incessantly. All I hear while watching that show is radio static on blast.

"SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Gilmore Girls is all that keeps me sane in this Buffyless world.

adam (adam), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Veronica Mars is keeping me sane.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

That 70's Show...man, why is that crap still on?!? Why was it ever?

Phil Dokes (sunny), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

I've only seen about half-a-dozen full "Friends" episodes, and I always want to stab Rachel in the eyes. I think it's really a "take yer pick" situation with that show.

And Emily, that dude from Fear Factor also now co-hosts "The Man Show," so you can hate him even more.

Also, everyone on "My So-Called Life."

sugarpants (sugarpants), Friday, 12 November 2004 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Phil Dokes hates the universe

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 12 November 2004 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Season: Eight 1996/97
Episode: Karate Kids #177
Why the hell hasn't someone put a stop to this yet! An evil gang is kicking 3J and Richie off of their own playground. Not if Park Ranger Urkel has anything to say about it. With the transformation chamber, he makes Bruce Lee Urkel, Bruce Lee Richie, and Bruce Lee 3J. This is the only Family Matters episode that was rated TV-PG.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 12 November 2004 21:13 (twenty years ago)

I imagine Bruce Lee 3J clearly qualifies as the "worst TV character ever"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 12 November 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I mean, the kid's name is already THREE-J. Now you have BRUCE LEE THREE-J. Good God.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 12 November 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

the friends episode(s?) where ross starts having temper fits over people stealing his sandwiches is one of the worst, most embarrassing plotlines on any sitcom, ever.

also the one where Ross finds out Joey and Rachel are seeing each other and proceeds to shriek "I'M FIIIINE!" for the entire episode.

Okay, but did anyone see the guy that played Brian Krakow's "MALE LESBIAN" character on the L-Word? He wins this hands down.
