It is very forced... that's the word. It's like they're trying to make fun of themselves while trying to make fun of something else, and none of it ends up working. The impressions are uniformly terrible, the writing is insipid, the comedians are anal leakage. And oh yeah, the ethnic jokes! Hummus breath HO HO HO!!!

black people actually get to be "people" every week on Mad T.V. instead of always having to be "black" people like on SNL. Maybe someday SNL will stop seeing the very sight of a black person as some radical thing that needs to be pointed out with a heavy-handed ham-fist. but that's for another thread. It's possible that Lorne is still shocked by the very idea of black people.

The skit I saw last night consisted of a white woman's cellphone going off continuously in the middle of funeral. Everyone else in the funeral is black. No jokes/laughter whatsoever. Not even anything racial. Effect: zilch. Maybe this shit is funnier when they export it to the third world or something.

It's often hilarious, but it isn't for snooty folks who don't enjoy broad, physical humor. They take more chances then most t.v. shows. They aren't afraid of failure. unlike SNL, a show that writhes in agony underneath its own flop-sweat. Mad t.v. would be even better live. Too bad they don't do that.

We should have a thread about black people on SNL. I've always thought it's remarkable how consistent their agenda is. You watch "classic" skits like Eddie Murphy in whiteface, experiencing how craaaaazy all the white people get as soon as the last black guy gets off the boss (and at the bank: "Sure, you're white - take all the cash you want!") - exaggerating the issue of "white privilege" to a comical degree, in order to laugh it away and deny it. And whenever I see a little snippet of the show now - they're still doing that!

But that guy who plays Stewart (Michael McDonald?) - every single one of his characters is exactly the same, some shrill, obnoxious wiseass who says "inappropriate" things very very loudly in a "funny" voice (all of which sound pretty much the same). It's somewhat amusing for like one sketch but that's about it.

Here's one thing I like about Mad T.V. And I'm sorry to keep bringing up SNL, but it's such an obvious horse to whip and I'm nothing if not obvious: In the 10 years or whatever that Mad T.V. has been on there hasn't been one cast member on that show who hasn't been willing to look silly/like a buffoon/like an idiot. I respect that. On the other hand, almost NOBODY on SNL is willing to look that silly. They are ruled by fear. A lot of people on t.v. are. They are looking ahead. Mad T.V. provides a healthy dose of anarchy. Will Ferrell shoulda been on Mad T.V.

i can't say that i have watched much mad tv, but what i have seen i was not impressed with. and if it is so much superior to snl (which sadly isn't saying much these days) who are some funny people who launched their careers on the show? i can't think of anyone, but i am pretty ignorant on the cast, so maybe someone else can help me out.

Ms. Swan can stink up the joint, as can Stewart, as can any recurring character. Will Sasso, however, is comedy gold. Also, David Herman (AKA Michael Bolton from Office Space). Also, ARTIE LANGE.

MadTv still sucks. Saying that it's great because it's better than SNL is smoke and mirrors.

Mad TV is just as guilty as SNL of inventing an annoying character and beating it into the ground over and over and over again. Nothing makes me reach for the remote faster than seeing that retarded Stewart character or that old lady "oh, dear, baby!" person appearing on screen accompanied by the studio audience applauding as if Fonzie just walked onto the set or something.

I'd love to see Mad TV live, they'd be able to do it easy because they've memorized their lines for the most part. Try looking at SNL sometime, how rarely they actually look at each other while they're speaking. Or don't. But if even if you do, don't, because it starts getting creepy watching them face away from eeach other into that fake faraway space that actors look which is actually where the cue cards are.

MadTV was much better during its first seasons. And Will Sasso saved the series after that. I have to admit the Stewart, Miss Swan and other recurring characters are fucking annoying. But it's funnier than SNL this Days. Well, of course, herpes seems to be funnier than SNL this days.

MAD tv was a show that had a funny sketch precisely once every year, at most. but SNL isn't exactly much better these days. I love low-brow humor, but I wish they'd both learn "brevity is the soul of wit" when they run sketches that go overlong
