but jimmy smitt's GHOST is going to come back!

I hate this show

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I'd settle for Steven Botchco being shot on sight.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

i think people who watch this show must be some exotic sub-species, i mean WHY IS IT STILL ON? WHO WATCHES IT?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago)

who did they vote for?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago)

there is nothing worse than the affected jerky panning in this show.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:02 (twenty years ago)

There, that's better. I was feeling isolated on that Mad T.V. thread. I needed to embrace the community with a common hatred.

I hope the last episode is a musical using all the songs from Cop Rock they never got to film.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago)

this show is better than Crossing Jordon, though

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 12 November 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago)

High praise, indeed. :)

Joe (Joe), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:30 (twenty years ago)

I was watching Law And Order SVU last night and that show is fucked up.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 12 November 2004 04:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't disdain NYPD Blue at all. I really like Sipowicz, or whatever he's called - Dennis Franz's character - and I always wished they had the nerve to focus more clearly on him, rather than always giving him a cuter, younger partner to stand at the front. Having said this, I did lose interest a bit, what with it being on at inconvenient times, and haven't watched it in some time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 November 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago)

But Franz's character on NYPD Blue is just a watered-down version of the same character he played on Hill Street Blues. That character was kind of a hoot. Greasy, grimey, and very nasty.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 November 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

shouldn't all of the show's viewers have been rendered blind by the sight of dennis franz'a ass?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Friday, 12 November 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it's like a poor substitute for Hill Street Blues in some other ways too, but even a poor version of that great show is still quite good.

Actually I am disinclined to develop contempt for people whatever TV they watch.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Have you guys seen Dressed To Kill or The Fury? Hill Street Blues wasn't the first time he played an obnoxious cop.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 12 November 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago)

yeah, he played lots of cops in movies. but he really got a lot of attention for his dirty cop on hill street blues.

martin, i don't really have contempt for things people watch. cuz i'll watch anything, really. but i have always disliked NYPD Blue. i don't like the tone of it. plus, making it in l.a. always seemed stupid to me. it looks really fake. but not entertainingly fake. ( i have to stifle myself when my dad talks about this show. it's just the kind of thing he likes. like judging amy. those kinds of shows. i bite my lip when he talks about don imus too.)

But, yeah, i can't throw stones. i watch nanny 911 AND wife swap!

did the original really last until 2005? holy shit

lowkey goatsed on the styx (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 30 August 2019 20:29 (six years ago)

A continuation of the groundbreaking, Emmy-winning 1993-2005 original series, the NYPD Blue revival starred British newcomer Fabien Frankel as Theo Sipowicz, son of Blue‘s iconic cop Andy Sipowicz, played by Dennis Franz. Theo is a “hard-drinking, hard-headed and quick-witted cop,” much like his old man, and is working towards becoming an NYPD detective… while also investigating his father’s murder.

This would have only worked if Franz came back as a ghost and they solved crimes together.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 August 2019 20:29 (six years ago)

xp yes and it was fairly rote but it did manage the fairly rare feat of tracking an original cast member's role from start to 'finish', in sipowicz's case to finally be ready to be promoted to being a boss and have the brass want it, which made for some good final-season beats

i'm not sure how much of the writing was delegated in later seasons—looking at it quick i see that their ex-cop/writer from early years still has cowriting credits on every episode—but one thing the original had going for it even late in its run was the legacy milch-isms in the language and diction, probably nothing like the earlier years but still a durable satisfaction
