I just ripped one of the test tone tracks from Pan Sonic's "Vakio," put it on repeat on Winamp as non-distracting background noise so that I can concentrate on reading

To what lengths do you go to ensure amenable reading ambience?

walked across the campus to the cathedral-like law library with a backpack loaded with 6-8 hours worth of supplies(batteries, CDs, cokes, etc).

didn't leave until kicked out by library staff.

Sometimes I put my headphones on with nothing playing, to block the noise out at work and so people stop bugging me.

I did that on family vacations when I was 11 so that my parents wouldn't try to talk to me.

I have never quite gone to the lengths of slaughtering my entire household in order to get the requisite peace and quiet, but I've come extremely close.

two months pass...
Can anyone recommend (or have) any sound files of ambient murmurring as one would hear in a cafe? That is, people speaking but without any conversations being intelligible.

Have you tried just putting on music (a bunch of it, on random, so you don't get sucked out of your cocoon by recognizing what song's coming next), but lowering the volume just enough so it's hard to make anything out?
