I figure I need to start publicizing this a little more readily, but that weekend has been the subject of advance planning -- on and off! -- regarding a Big Ol' Get-Together for Various Types in London. Various things have been threatened, but I don't know how firm all the plans were, so I thought now was the time to try and nail things down. Kate, had anything been settled or not or...?

Erm... oh shit. I've been too busy planning tours and getting my freaking life sorted to actually remember to do anything about Starstock. It's probably too late to actually get the Betsey for a Friday night at this point.

Does anyone else have any ideas for pubs that will let people do semi-acoustic sorts of things in their back/upstairs rooms and not charge a hire fee for the privilidge? I know they exist, I just don't know much about London pubs.

Cue me going on about Monkey Chews in Chalk Farm again, though its tiny. Plus have you read Kevin's post on 22 - mentions the Buffalo Bar which would be a good possibility. Or get ambitious and use Dingwalls or Borderline? Or get hip and try Cargo or 93 Feet East?

Er.. semi-acoustic? Er hello, can I be a Various Type?

No, no, not big venues. Need little intimate venue about the size of Betsey and free for "Starstock" on Friday 3rd August. Need suggestions of venues! Don't even know if we'll be able to play, as Matthew will be out of town and we still haven't even looked at which songs we can do without him. Karaoke barcrawl might actually just be a better idea... we can have all of us do songs of the bands we *wish* we were in. That might be better than anything else... I'm a rubbish promoter/organiser as the SVS went to show.

Hang on, what's Starstock? My poor little brain is getting confused.

What is Monkey Chews?

Starstock was supposed to be this big musical get-together featuring the musical output of the various bands whose members are all on this other Secret List that some of us are on.

It was going to be The Lollies (until our drummer went on holiday) and MJ Hibbert and the Validators (and I think the Validators are on holiday too) so then we decided to make it a semi-acoustic thing.

Lack of organisation has clearly scuppered the idea. Unless Chris has found us a venue, and that means that he can play, too.

Oh, this is all to celebrate Ned being in town, BTW.

The Various Artists would play, if they knew how to play live, we got played twice on student radio!

Monkey Chews is a pub / fish restaurant in Chalk Farm, with an upstairs room that has a DJ booth, similar size to the Betsey but without the L-shape. It has a screen for videos and a bar. Bookable for little dough I imagine.

Last time I was there was a Will Oldham theme night, where they showed Gummo with a soundtrack of continuous Oldham.

MJ has confirmed he's in somehow, though his preferred date is the 4th, not the 3rd. So we must either Plan Wisely or just do a two-day bash. ;-)

there is another secret list? one which you're all on...except me. sheesh, i'm not that bad am i? *sulk*

Hey Gareth, you're not the only one. I'm not on it either, despite what it said on the Focus Group contributors list.

Well one of the days I am organising a Pumpkin Publogs Rainbow Pubcrawl, which will involve central London pubs with colours in their names. Exact route to be determined - chances of the Blue Posts, White Horse and Red Lion in Soho being involved, very high.

Pete, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think you mean the Golden Lion, we have had this conversation before.

Emma, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

No The Red Lion on Gt Windmill Street was what I meant, though by all means the Golden lion on Dean Street (with the best jukebox in Soho - pshaw) could be included.

I thought the 4th was Tom's day to Do Stuff? I don't know. It's impossible to organise when people are counter-organising.

masonic boom, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, that's why I sent out all those earlier messages. ;-) Fret not, Things Will Happen. Just maybe more on the fly. Presumably Tom's return from vacation will bring clarity.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If you need DJs or anything like that, I'm up for it. Have got decks too. I'll bet RickyT'll do it as well.

Karaoke a good idea as well. Especially if we're all drunk...!
