Scanning slides

I've got hundreds of old slides that I'd like to scan into my PC. Can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced slide scanner?

what kinds of slides are they? can you not just use a normal scanner?

normal scanners won't work ken - slides don't reflect light. you can buy attachments for scanner that'll reflect the light back through the slide (mirrors, bascially) but slides also tend to be very small so you need a high resolution scanner.

(no recommendations, sorry)

We have an attachment at school here that has a backlight and a special set of things for slides and negatives. You put the slides/negatives into it and then plug the device into the scanner, which has special settings in its software for slides/negatives. It really works quite well, and I imagine is cheaper than a dedicated slide scanner.

Unfortunately I don't know the actual cost as I get to use it for free.

So I'm basically of no help.

I did this with all my grandfathers' slides (both paternal and maternal), as well as my dad's. The leftover/doubles we used to make a big window shade. I've posted some of the super-old Disneyland ones on the Disneyland thread.

Also fond of this one, of my mom as an adolescent: https://www.flickr.com/photos/joshuababcock/5393559653/in/album-72157625793372785/
