Immanent means inherent in, and usually has religious connotations. Imminent means about to happen.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

immanent is inside, dwelling, and imminent is approaching, soon. I think, could be the other way round...no, that's right.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, x-post!

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Imminent = likely to happen very soon
Immanent = existing everywhere

C J (C J), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha! Thanks. So - the only thing that cannot be imminent is immanence.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess - I mean, there are lots of things that can't be imminent - yesterday, or yellow, for example. But I get what you mean.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesterday could be imminent - at a Paul Macartney concert, for example. Yellow could also be imminent - at a Coldplay concert.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Not yesterday the word, used as a title for a song - the concept, yesterday, or yellow. If that were the case, 'immanent' could be imminent at a spelling bee.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Immanence could be imminent if the 'second coming' was nearly upon us.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 15 November 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yellow could be imminent - some custard is coming, for example. I am imminent yellow.

emil.y (emil.y), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

at 23:59 two nights ago, yesterday was imminent.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

erk... "were" not "was".

This is my know-it-all and pedantry day it seems. What an arse.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am imminent yellow.

This sounds like a song title.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Could imminence ever be immanent?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 15 November 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Imminence probably is immanent, in that something is always about to happen everywhere.

I am imminent yellow.

This sounds like a song title.

I am curious, Perry?

emil.y (emil.y), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

why "were"?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never used the word "Immanent"

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I once created some detrius of a fake teenage rock band for an art project, and the title I used for their first 7" was Countdown to Imminence.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never used it either; however, I look forward to using it at least five times tomorrow.

KeithW (kmw), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, I meant detritus.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

this is one of those things where you say the words enough and "imminent" and "immanent" start to sound like words in a made-up languauge
