have any of yall had good experiences with movers in the city? my impending move looks like it'll have to happen on a weekday, and i doubt i could get much help, so it looks like movers might be the way to go. i have zero experience in this, and i'd like to hire some folks i can trust. if you have recommendations, please lemme know! thanks.

I've twice gone with this guy called Vinnie the Mover. If it's a regular Point A to Point B move, he'll give you a flat rate (no hourly charge). He's pretty reasonable, and the guys they sent were pretty fast.

can you email me his info, nate? thanks.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Do NOT use Moshe's. They were so bad, my old building actually banned them from the building. They'll fuck your shit up and you'll lose your deposit.

Sure, I think I still have his card at home. I'll send you the details later.

BTW, I've heard the best rates can be had with Chinese movers, but they only advertise in the Chinese newspapers. I know someone who moved with one, but it helps to know someone who speaks Chinese who can hook you up.

my first move was w/ Time, I think they're called, big white trucks. Two guys who were very strong. Trouble free. My second move was this guy Gus who was an old punk rocker who has one of those giant vans, for a while he was delivering Vice and Flyer and similar mags. They were super cheap, super cool, did everything in 2 trips, respeced the vinyl etc. Unfortunately, I don't think they're doing it anymore.

my friend owns a van and runs his own little moving business. you can email him here: mark_winkel at hotmail dot com

and dan, do you have contact info for time?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

alex is so otm. moishe's = COW CUNTS WHO DON'T SHOW UP - THEN RESCHEDULE FOR THE NEXT DAY AND STILL DON'T SHOW UP. we used ben-hur last time because the commercial jingle is so catchy. it turned out alright. kinda expensive though, but my roommate's company paid for it.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

how expensive is expensive, phil? i really have no clue what i will need to pay for this.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

well actually it was expensive since we were dropping off the models and their bunk beds off in their new dorm in jersey city and then back to move me & regina's stuff to the lower east side. after everything it was like 1200, but im pretty sure your move will be a lot lot less. call one of the companies and get an over the phone appraisal. which will probably not be that accurate, but will give you a rough idea, i guess.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yes but what if i am picking up models in bunk beds?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Make sure they are taped down securely.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I got Time out of the phone book. Moving's expensive no matter how you cut it, and I had to call my mom like 6 times to figure out what an appropriate tip should be. Good luck. I also had the brilliant idea of moving from Park Slope to Cobble Hill, not a very far trip, on the day of the freaking marathon. 4th ave in brooklyn was blocked for hours, so they were late. My only other advice which is prob obvious, but borrow a car, or even rent one, and move all the computer/stereo/vinyl etc yourself. Leave the movers boxes and boxes of books, big furniture etc.

I just used VanG1rls, an all female moving company. They fucking rocked. My guy friend was trying to get a mirror off a pole and one of the girls asked if he wanted to step on her back to get it. But they might be too pricey for you (i got it reimbursed). Also, do you need someone to provide the truck too and how big of a truck do you need, or are you getting your own truck and just need help with the packing. Because i have also used the moving help link on the uhaul website. That was pretty great too because you just type in what you need and on what day and they give you rates from different companies. And basically you can read reviews and the money you pay goes into escrow that you have to give them a code once the job is done to release the money. So at least you don't get screwed. I used this once when I moved to NY and it went perfectly.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Vang1rls advertise on CL, where you can see their rates. If all else fails, don't forget the man with a van option under labor on craigslist.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

some of those man w/ a van people are amazing. Lauren P. used Trztn from Flux Information Sciences and I was supposed to come over real early and help load up. I showed up and it was all done, everything jammed into a van and just Tristan standing there. It was amazing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

did you show up late on purpose hoping that that would happen?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i think Vangirls has a website now. http://vangirlsnyc.com/
I had 4 girls and they brought a 15 foot truck and I didn't have to do jackshit. I had some heavy, huge pieces of furniture too, and they wrapped the hell out of it with padding. I also think you can negotiate with them if it is a smaller move. But, I think they ask if you can tip like 20%.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, I didn't say I showed up late! I showed up 5 minutes after expected, with a coffee for ms. Lauren.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I also have a man in a van worth recommending if you still need one, Yance.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i used ben hur. no complaints. 3 burly men showed up at my apt with a bunch of boxes and things and went to work. about 3 hours later everything in my place (minus furniture) was packed up and loaded on to a truck. a week later the boxes all showed up in ohio, with two really nice guys (jorge & jesus) who unloaded it all into my parents' basement. yay ben hur!
