That face you tend to make when passing co-workers in the halls

It's such a stupid face!

I can't be the only one who does this. On my way to the kitchen just now, I did it to three separate people (and they did it back to me!) and it was only through this repetition that I began to realize how stupid it is!

It involves raising my eyebrows in acknowledgement and mouthing either "hey" or "hi" (I'm not sure which) as I pass.

It is stupid!

Yeah! I just wait for the corridor to be clear before I venture out, and then I walk really quickly to the exit.

I *hate* myself for this. I do either:

1) a stupid quarter smile which I imagine makes me look either smug or, well, stupid

2) a full closed-mouth grin which probably looks all too enthusiastic or, well stupid

3) the old chin-nod, which probably looks patronizing

It's impossible for me to pass a co-worker and not do one of these things.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid I often don't say anything to people in the corridor or photocopier room, I'll say hello if they speak first. I'm a terrible person, because I reckon I could be quite socialable if things would just click.

Yesterday I was almost dragged into agreeing to be part of an inaugural office book club! Talking to co-workers is dangerous and bad!!

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

- eyebrow raise

- chin nod

sowhatifimonmysticrecords (deangulberry), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I glare and flare my nostrils... so they know that I know what they're up to... on the internet.

andy, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I do the "WESTSIDE" handshape.

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh fantastic, I thought this was just me being socially awkward! Does anyone else ever wake up in the morning without talking to anyone for a good hour or so, only to give the first person you come into contact with a bellowing "HELLO!!!" or a pusillanimous meow because you haven't had the change to gauge the volume of your own voice?

Patrick Allan (adr), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but I am the first in the office and so this person would be the cleaning lady, who "doesn't count".

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I do this to all my office homies:

I haven't eaten any co-workers yet and when I do, I intend to pass them in the restroom like a civilized person. My face will be one of bemused contempt.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't eaten any co-workers yet

I can't even figure out what you were trying to say here.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm confused.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

n/a, it's a sub-par joke about 'passing' co-workers. Sorry everybody. Pray continue whilst I sit in the corner here and contemplate both subjects appropriate for public *ahem* consumption and jokes that actually work.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(he means passing like pooping)

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Listen to the smart lady.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It must be an old person's phrase.

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

OH. I have been slow all over ILX today. Sorry.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll pass by co-workers in the hallway, give them a friendly smile, and then just after I've passed them mutter loudly, "dick" or "bitch".

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone get that young British man to speak up? I'm a bit hard of hearing.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I always pretend to shoot myself in the head or I do the "my hands are attacking my face" gesture. My coworkers are used to it.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the face I make may be exactly the same face I make when I'm trying have a poo, a thin lipped grimace. So michael's joke isn't so off the mark.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

an awful, awful image.

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

but you know exactly what it looks like!
