How do you get the burning taste out of an espresso pot?

I left it on too long by accident, and now every coffee tastes like burning. I've scrubbed it, soaked it in detergent and boiling water, soaked it in white vinegar, &c. I don't want to have to buy abloodynother one.

boil the vinegar right through it; rinse it. also fill it with baking soda paste and let it sit for a day or two.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah? Excellent, thanks.

I didn't boil the vinegar through it, because I didn't know what vinegar does when it boils. Stupid metal.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

are you matey with any restaurants or coffee shops? ask them for a tablespoon of their filter cleaner and dilute it in the pot and leave it overnight...

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahhh. Good thinking.

And I thought all was lost. I love youse.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.urnex.com/products.htm <----- works wonderfully.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.urnex.com/espresso.htm

this powder is the stuff i'm talking about, any establishment with an espresso machine will have a version of it

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it going to cost more than a new espresso pot? :)

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Urgh, it is. Hmm.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

no idea. it's industrial restaurant stuff. It's probably not too pricey, but you may have to buy a case of it.

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

go with the "borrow a teaspoon" idea.

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, yeah.

I should try the local coffee bean shop, it's packed full of wondrous coffee-related products. Trayce knows the one.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Here we go. That's my local shop. At the bottom of the page there's a detergent thingy.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus that *is* expensive. I wouldn't pay more than... zero. What wrong with asking to scam some off of a coffee shop? You seem determined to buy it for some reason. Just be all like, "This might sound weird, but..."

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Because I'm not the kind of person to walk into a coffee shop and ask them for free stuff.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's cleaning product, though. They don't care, they just work there.

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You do it then.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This is an episode of Seinfeld, obv. You're Jerry and I'm George.

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What burnt? The grinds or the base water part? If the basket wot holds the grinds burnt you might be able to buy a replacement basket from Coffee Company, they seem to sell accessories. Also, replace the rubber seal, as that would likely be a major source of unremovable stink.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

And the rubber seals are cheap.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks. The whole things smells of burning. The base, the filter, the ring, everything.

I'm boiling diluted vinegar through it as we speak. After all that, if it still smells a bit but I can't taste it, BFW. If that doesn't work, I'll probably just get another pot [~$15 at Matchbox].

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Because I'm not the kind of person to walk into a coffee shop and ask them for free stuff.

that's why i said "are you matey with one" even with someone who works in one, because they could just get you a little bit. having said that, if you use your coffee pot a lot, having some proper cleaning powder might not go astray, you would only use a little and it lasts for ages

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: Oh, and nothing looks burnt, it just smells burnt. The outside of the base is a little bit charred, but only on the outside.

Gem: Nah. But you're right, I should just get some for the long run.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think also the aluminium pots tend to burn/stink easier too - stainless steel ones are more pricey but, altho ive blackened mine, it doesnt have a burnt smell at all.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am just guessing tho, mind you. I sound like some kind of nob coffee expert, haha.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

So that's why they're more expensive.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm nob coffee

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ew

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

just get a small tin of citric acid, use one spoon to one litre of water and boil the mix through several times, then rinse. Do not inject fluid into eyeballs or use as enema solution

It tastes like burning!

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I threw it out. Thanks everyone.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Get one stainless steel!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I will! Just as soon as I can find a cheap one.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm... if Coffee Company arent cheap (and I havent checked their prices really), you could try somewhere like Where House on Bridge road, or Supply and Demand... even Target sells stainless steel pots I think.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent, thanks.

I got my aluminium ones from Matchbox, and there were some very stainless-steel-looking ones at the front for not a lot more. They're the same ones The Coffee Company has in boxes behind the counter.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

A good brand is Vev - theyre not that cheap tho. But my Vev machine's lasted me like 5 years or more and its all black on the base but still works a treat. Just need to change the ring every 12 months or so. The dude at coffee company said my pots really rare and not made anymore - its a 6 cup one but the basket has this little divider disc you can insert into it so you can put in half the water and grains for 3 cup, which is what I normally make in the morning (and then drink out of a huge mug).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.coffeecompany.com.au/product_images/Vespres4Box&Pot400.gif

this one's $49.90 at Coffee company and it looks pretty good. Thats a good price (I paid more for mine but then mine is 6 cup).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I like collecting these things - Ive got a shitload of aluminium ones in varying sizes, my 3/6 cup Vev machine, and one of those spout and platform one cup espressos, which sadly got burnt up by a dopey pothead housemate *grump*. I want some more... MOOOREE.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for t'advice, I'll pick up a 6 cup stainless steel [or request one as a christmas present].

They get addictive, don't they? I bought 3, 6 and 9 cup aluminium ones because they're so cheap [and I stuffed up]. The 3 holds enough for nearly one cup, and the 9 holds enough for nearly two cups. The 6 was perfect before I burnt it to death.

This is me, who two months ago didn't drink coffee.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah :D Yeah, it is evil.. I just cant touch instant since I was introduced to the wonders of espresso at home.

I'm paranoid of the cheapo aluminium pots as I've noticed that if you leave a bit of water in the bottom, or over-burn them, the metal seems to discoulour and give off a strange bloom.

Also all that shit about alzheimers disease gave me the fear, even if it isnt true.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Instant's the very reason I never drank coffee. Every time I tried it, it was so foul that I couldn't finish it. It's only this year that I tried it from an espresso pot and loved it.

Alzheimer's disease? wtf??

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

agh suddenly I've gone all dizzy.

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh pfft :P Ive made you all paranoid now havent I? heh soz.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I should explain: it has been posited that aluminium can cause alzheimers disease. Hence avoiding it in antiperspirants, metal pots, coffeepots etc.

I think its been debunked since but I'm not sure.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The dizziness is a sugar thing, I must have had too much then none or something. Everything's spinning and I've brown out in a sweat. If I stop typing it's because I've passed out or some such.

Oh and these cheap pots are also shit because they leak everywhere when I pour them.

xpost: Ah. Time for a new pot then. :)

Adamdrome Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

brown = broken
