is there really an H is Chrystals? I thought it was Crystals...

They've been tarting up lately, which is interesting to note from the bus.

Is this a stealth thread to find out who lives in North London?

they had two shopfronts before.. one slightly further up the road but it was being refurbished.

two years ago there was a excellent kebab shop at highbury corner, reassuringly called "Kebabs and Burgers" who did the most scrumptious chicken kebab ever..

I was still living in milton keynes at the time, and i went there after seeing Urusei Yatsura at the Garage, after tasting that kebab i've made up my mind that I wanted to move to London.

When I finally move here, it was almost like a pilgrimage when I took the tube to Highbury & Islington station... BUT ONLY TO FIND THAT THE PLACE HAD CLOSED DOWN! :( my whole reason for moving here, gone.

But now there's Hillmarton Tandoori to take its place, and King's Kebab at Earl's Court. Crystals are ok, too. Plus Chicken Land.. where once someone walked in, and when asked upon the question "what would you like sir?", answered.. "chicken"

So, does anyone know if it's true that the doner kebab was invented in Berlin in the sixties? My Time-Out guide to Berlin told me this.

Anyway taking sides: Donor Vs Shish Vs Shawarma.

I'm with Shawarma, but wouldn't say no to the others if they were on offer.

what's the difference between a shawarma and doner?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Doner is minced lamb and spices compressed and cooked on a spit and then usually served in a pita with salad, mint sauce/chilli sauce etc.

Shawarma is pieces of lamb (or chicken) compressed with (different) spices - such as allspice and mace, cooked on a spit and then usually served in a "wrap" with salad, chillis etc and a sauce made from ingerdiants such as tahini and lemon juice, etc.

Shawarma sauce is called taratour.

the pinkish-white goop that all of the sauces drip into is one of the foulest food-related things. and the stink..

i'm glad to report that the storeplace for "kebabs and burgers" is now another late night food shop, and do very delicious curries indeed! (i had some meatball and boiled egg curry the other night - after the garage, no less! - and yum!) london is worth moving to once more.
