are these any good?

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

some find them overrated. i think they're charming, but i'm kind of obsessed with william powell (and the cute dog).

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

God, been years since I've seen them. The first one was the one closest to the original, after that it was like how the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes veered away into whatever the hell -- but I like these much better, charming is a good word for them, and Powell and Loy = roxor. (Damn, I forgot about the dog!)

Jimmy Stewart played a BAD guy in one of them! "It's a wonderful life...AND NOW IT MUST END." (not an actual line of dialogue)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, i forgot about that. he played a friend of theirs secretly up to no good, right?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The dog's name (Asta) is always in crossword puzzles. The books are good, too. Almost every chapter begins and ends with drinking, like when Nick wakes up one morning and says, "I need something to cut the phlegm," and then pours himself a scotch.

Yeah or a family member or something?

I remember one of the movies started off with this brilliant party at their house. (Or maybe that was all of them.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The books are quick and fun reading.

Lots of witty banter about getting drunk .. And I love the way Myrna Loy would return Powell's insults with just a scrunched-up face scowl.

It's worth seeing at least one of them.

I thought this was a thread about thin men!

Thin Machine!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i added the first to my netflix queue (it's the only one they seem to have!) though i'd really like to check out the jimmy stewart one.

OT: "holiday" with katharine hepburn and cary grant doesn't seem to be out on dvd. what the fuck is it with these people???

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Once they have a kid it all goes to shit. I can't vouch for the perfect accuracy of these quotes 'cause they just sprang to mind but they're essentially correct:

Nora: "They're saying you were shot twice in the tabloids."
Nick. "Nonsense, they didn't get anywhere near my tabloids." Proceeds, if I remember correctly to shootornament off of Xmas tree with bb gun.

Nora (pointing to glass in Nick's hand): "Is that my drink?"
Nick: "What were you drinking?"
Nora: "Bourbon."
Nick (downs glass): "Yes it is."

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i adore these films!! "holiday" is awfully good too, it's my favorite katharine hepburn film.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 18 November 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I own 'Holiday' on DVD - but maybe it's only out in the UK. See also: Cary Grant

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 18 November 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the bit where Nick complains about feeling terrible in the morning. "I must not have had anything to drink last night."

It all makes sense when you realize the books were written during Prohibition.

Can't remember if this is in the original novel, but I remember from the film:

Nick, bandaged up, with a stack of newspapers in front of him: "I was shot twice in the Tribune."
Nora: "I read you were shot five times in the tabloids."
Nick: "It's not true. He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids."

five years pass...

Hmm. Maybe.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

Love the films--but am confused by peopkle referring to the books plural. Wasn't there just one?

My favourite moment is probably when Powell and son are out walking in Central Park, and Loy needs them home in a hurry, so she makes a cocktail and Powell hears the sound of the shaker and rushes home.

intrigued by the thought of anyone attempting william powellness in 2010 tbh (knowing it will boil down to 'arch stock character 2a' in depp's arsenal)

shecky naw (tremendoid), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

My father-in-law has the box of all these movies, I'm tempted to borrow them next time I visit.

You should, if you've never seen them. At the least, watch the first three.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 October 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

If Tim Burton ends up directing this, firebomb Hollywood.

romoing my damn eyes (Nicole), Thursday, 21 October 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

I've not seen any of them! I look at the set every time I'm at his house, but never had the time to dig in. Usually much more to do than sit around watching movies when we visit.

xpost -- Trust me, that was the one thing I was most worried about when I read the story. Nightmare fuel.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 October 2010 03:54 (fifteen years ago)

Sadly I'll admit to liking work the two of them have done together in the past, but at this point even I'm begging for an executive order forbidding them to work together ever again.

Anyway, bring on the drinks!
