Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of them are actually Puerto Rican. Like Alexander Graham Bell.

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Alexander Graham Bell? xpost exactly!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Alexander Graham Bell was a Scot.

Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What, no Chad Kroeger?

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Melissa Auf Der Maur being David Suzuki's advocate hurt his chances, that and him saying at the end of the show that he was voting for Tommy Douglas (also my vote). Sorry for not being jokey.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What's interesting is how many CBC employees there are on the list (2 in the top ten alone!).

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, Tim Horton (and just about everyone else) beat Mordecai Richler! I love Mordecai Richler! (i wouldn't ever call him a great cdn, but i wouldn't call anyone that)

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

can mordecai richler make me a damn fine cup of a coffee and a sandwich that melts in my mouth?? I think not.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Mordecai Richler discovered Maple Syrup. (makes as much sense as Bell being on the list)

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Where are Huck & Bryan on that list?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point, Huck. If there's anything anti-Canadian it's pointing out that someone here is greater than everyone else, our variant of the "tall poppy" idea.

Scott, what the hell kind of mouth do you have that can cause one of those hardtack buns of theirs to melt in there?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm, i had a lovely sandwich at a tim horton's outside of london, ontario a few years back. just lovely. i really felt at home there.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The only reason why I would say I should be on that list would be to get that ASSWIPE Hal Anderson OFF the list. What a fucking embarrassment.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

there are some people i like on that list, but no alice munro means i have to poop on it. (although it is possible that pam anderson is GREATER in mass than alice munro, so, you know, technically, she could be a GREATER canadian.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

DON WAS ROBBED.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's Brent Bambury? That guy is awesome. I love that guy. He's a CBC employee, why isn't he on the list? Why?

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he's great! Also, David Wisdom was awesome.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

we should do a 100 Greatest Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Employees list!

I really should just go ahead and move to Canada already.

Noodles, do you ever listen to GO! (BB's Sat. a.m. show)?

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The star of CHMA!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Noodles, do you ever listen to GO! (BB's Sat. a.m. show)?

I'm usually watching football Saturday a.m. Sometimes I even remember to work on ilx if the game sucks.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Go is a fantastic show, but I often miss it because of other things we have on the schedule. :(

Brent is definitely one of the CBC's under-utilized talents. Of course, the Brent years on BNW were great, but I think he also makes an excellent fill-in host when he appears on As It Happens.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the Brent years on BNW were great

They really were. I used to listen to it nearly every night back then.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, wow, I don't think I've ever heard him on ASH!

xpost,

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Where are Huck and s1ocki and Mrs. Chuck Tatum?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

How many Canadians have there been, ever?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Memo to Adam: I'm not great!

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

As Shit Happens?

He's great on AIH because he doesn't back down from the hard questions, even when he has a difficult interviewee. Kind of interesting because I seem to recall that when he started BNW he wasn't exactly a tip-top interviewer. He really grew into the role.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, yeah.
what do you like about go?

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm in sync with his sense of humour, and I find it really amusing what he gets away with on Saturday morning; he's almost certainly exposed a fairly wide Saturday-morning audience to music that would otherwise be extremely obscure to them. I think it's that combination of fun and subversion that I really like about the show, even if it is overly camp at times.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Kiefer Sutherland is Tommy Douglas' grandson? WTF??

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 November 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep! Apparently Kiefer's mom was Tommy's daughter! Weird but true!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 29 November 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Considering that Tommy is the father of our Canadian healthcare system, there's a good case to be made that Kiefer is the nephew of our healthcare system.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 29 November 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I met Keifer at Milano's on King Street a few years ago. He was quite nice. The nephew of socialized healthcare... ...who knew?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys are drunk. Well, Tommy won anyway. It was nice that a fellow alumnus of my university was the winner. Terry Fox was really good as well. I'm bothered that no woman was ranked higher than #18 and it was Shania Twain.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Joni Mitchell and Anne Murray both leap to mind before Shanners, but we should all be thankful it wasn't the dreaded Dion female.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The only ones that I hadn't pegged were Banting at #4 and Suzuki at #6 - I'd reversed them, in my prediction. Everything else was bang on, I'll say smugly, incl. Gretzky at 10 and Douglas-Fox-Trudeau at the top.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

neat that a pro-wrestler is on the list, but disappointing that both Bret Hart and AVRIL LAVIGNE are ahead of John Candy.

also, MUCH disappointment that Guy Caballero is missing. surely, his advances in the field of small-town TV broadcasting were of utmost significance.

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

narduwar wuz robbed

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

what the fuck is terry fox doing so high, i mean he had one leg and he ran across the country and everything, but thats not really national is it ?

i mean if it wasnt for tommy douglas, terry wouldnt even have that leg (he says w. a small amount of sarcasm)

anthony, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

WHERE ARE THE KIDS IN THE HALL?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

".....we should all be thankful it wasn't the dreaded Dion female."

But the DDF did crack spot 27. Ye gods!
