How do you justify going somewhere you've already been?

How do you go back to London for the 4th time when you haven't been to Tangiers?

I was just thinking how nice it would be to visit Mexico City this coming spring, I haven't been there since I was a kid. But then I thought, "Well, there's a finite amount of vacation time, and money, so why don't you try to go somewhere you've never been?"

I never re-read books either, for that same reason.

A buddy of mine is forced to go on vacations with his inlaws, always to Hawaii: "Oh, but we go every year, it's a tradition." He wants to go Mexico or even a different tropical island, but they only want to visit the same place they've gone to again and again. Boring.

It's tried and true, you commie.

has this got anything to do with sleeping with one's ex?

'Cause it's never the same place. Travel isn't necessarily about quantity, it can also be about depth as opposed to just breadth of knowledge (fox v. hedgehog). Go back to Mexico City or don't, but don't be so greedy for novelty that you never get to know any place.

It's true, novelty is what I crave. It just seems like life is short and Circus Circus just stays the same...

i'd very much like to go back to places i've already been, because i don't feel like i'm done with them yet.

don't blame me, i voted for ram jam (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what she said!

Every time I visit a place, an angel dies.

nostalgia

I hate the backpacker mentality of collecting places they've been - I often think half the point is to be able to impress people. Getting to really know a foreign locale is admirable and very worthwhile. A 1-4 week tourist experience is pretty superficial in terms of learning about another culture/lifestyle/environment.

Especially if you love a place, but choose not to live there for whatever reason, return trips are a great idea.

supercub, Friday, 19 November 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have nothing against roaming, per se, I just think that I can rather easily justify returning to a place I like.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

why live anywhere?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you going existentially suicidal on us here, gabbneb?

I LOVE collecting places, just like people. Been there, done that, that's so '01, etc.

I've been to 49 states but not Alaska and I don't really want to go. It doesn't really count, anyway, seeing as how it's Russia.

andy, Friday, 19 November 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I mean, I understand the 'travel' and 'non-travel' boxes, but isn't the corollary "How do you justify living somewhere you lived yesterday?" I suppose it comes down to "how often do you travel?"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Not very often

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I would go insane if I went to the same place every vacation.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm insane thinking that no one wants to go to Alaska, just out of principle for not completing 50 states.

(Florida, on the other hand, is a perfectly valid state for that principle.)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just having a discussion with a friend about the travel vs. buying things approach to disposable income.. We agreed that it is an interesting personality indicator.

I buy things. Although I do travel on occasion.

supercub, Friday, 19 November 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Alaska has mosquitos and the beer costs too much.. I would go if it was sandwiched somewhere between Oregon & Idaho.

andy, Friday, 19 November 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I only go on vacation to New Orleans. I think, 'how could I justify going somewhere when I could go to New Orleans?'

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't have any mosquito encounters, but then again, I stuck to the south central part of the state. Maybe Denali has lots of mosquitos. Still though... the FJORDS!

donut christ (donut), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That is silly, Andy; Alaska is gorgeous. Unbelievable glaciers and forests, and more pleasant than oh so many other places in the U.S.

Sooo glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

For 20 years, my wife and I have gone back to the same place on Maine's coast where we honeymooned. We're quite familiar with the area by now but still there is no hint of a diminishing return.

She's pretty well travelled. I'm not. But we both agree that this is our favorite place to spend some time relaxing and forgetting the everyday hubbub of our lives. Of course we're pretty much old and decrepit, y'know.
