How to get rid of that "Stale Air" Smell?

What to do? We've sealed the windows of our apartment for winter, and it's already starting to build up. There's an exhaust fan in the bathroom, so I don't think it's coming from there.

non-scented candles

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Febreeze it! It actually removes odor causing bacteria, not just masking it like the bargain brand air fresheners!"

andy, Friday, 19 November 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax is spot-on.

Burn tyres.

Daffyd, the only gay in the village (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

fart outside

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow hang on, you've sealed up the windows? Like the apartment is airless now? Is that healthy? Is this a common thing in very cold/snowy areas then?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a common thing especially if your house is drafty anyway, air gets in but not so much that your heating bills are ludicrous.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i am so glad to be australian, i can leave my windows open right through "winter"

gem (trisk), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Not in Melbourne you can't! ;P Bloody perthians ;)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

well when i say leave them open, i would only leave them open a little bit in winter, it does get sort of coldish. but there's none of this sealing them up business!

gem (trisk), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

get plants. lots of 'em.

j.m. lockery (j.m. lockery), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Know anyone with scuba gear? Have the tanks filled and expell the air into your home. If you've got cats or dogs, though, they probably won't won't find this process very amusing.

Serious answer: A humidifier with a touch of sparkling water, or maybe a hint of lemon extract might help.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah plants would work, water fountains too... possibly also one of those deionizer things?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 November 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

candles, plants, running a bit of cold water, cooking

TOMBOT, Friday, 19 November 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"i am so glad to be australian, i can leave my windows open right through "winter" "

Oh, to be able to put winter in "quotes".

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah sometimes during "winter" it gets as cold as 17-18 degrees celsius *shivers*

gem (trisk), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

17-18 degrees sell-see-wha? Are you speaking Australian or something?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yes we prefer metric systems of measurement here, more simplicity = more time available to spend drinking beer at the pub and swimming at the sunny beach

gem (trisk), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to Kilometers Davis, etc?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yes him and sometimes the rolling kilograms

gem (trisk), Friday, 19 November 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I must say I lived in Victoria Australia for 13 years and it often got to minus 7 degrees celcius (19.4 fahrenheit) where I lived.

god made dirt and dirt bust ass (papa november), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

true true, i shouldn't encourage the stereotype that all of australia is balmy. there are cold climates here too!

gem (trisk), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's balmy here in QLD right now and it fucking sucks.

god made dirt and dirt bust ass (papa november), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

actually it's been cold here all week, but it's back to normal now, 26 today and in the 30s on the weekend. mmmm beach.

gem (trisk), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

fill the air with the scents of santorum

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

eat lots of chicken burritos and fart.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

can't they do all three at once?

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 19 November 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, thanks for the suggestions, but it turns out that the correct answer was, in fact, "Not leaving cooked collard greens in the electric wok for two weeks"

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 22 November 2004 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I place odds at 20:1 it's the carpet / floor. Wash it good, see what happens.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 22 November 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

2 week old collard greens hanging about?

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 22 November 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It could be the decaying head behind the stove.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 November 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, it was the greens.
