Do I need an iPod?

Someone at work just got a new one and offered me her old one for £120-ish. But I keep thinking that if I get one at all I should get a brand-new model. But that's more expensive and it's not like I really need one anyway. Why am I incapable of making a decision?

I'm not certain that the difference between a new one and an old one is at all worth noticing. HD size vs. a newer bigger one...maybe. But unless this one's in crap condition and holds next to nothing, I say go for it.

It's a 40GB. I think I'd rather a 60GB. But it's so much more expensive.

I'm such a tart for consumer gadgetry. I don't need this.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It must be my mac sending me subliminal adverts.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hey
even I got me an ipod thinger.

they can't be all bad.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've thought about getting an IPod, but I honestly don't know when I would ever use it. My main listening hours are in the car, where the car stereo does just fine. At home, I prefer my home stereo. Now, if I spent a lot of time on the train, that would be a different story, I guess. Plus, the thought of trying to extract all the MP3s from my CD collection gives me the heeby-jeebies.

I've got a 20 GB and I haven't even filled up a fourth of it. Those AAC files are really small.

I am a big-time train guy.
Public transit+walking only for me.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My 20 gig is full and I want a 40 gig! Someone offer me one for £120!

ledge (ledge), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuesday night: charge ipod fully
Wednesday morning: take ipod to work, total listening time: 40 mins
Thursday morning: leave house, prepare to listen to ipod - it's out of batteries.

THIS is why you shouldn't buy a machine which can't even be turned off (the power drains in 72 hours even when it's new, even if you don't use it AT ALL).

NB I have only been using it for roughly 6 months, maybe 2 hours a week. I have several other issues/problems if you need any further persuasion.

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You can turn it off, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, you can definitely turn off an ipod.

But I'm pissed at mine because it's not working properly with Windows and either crashes the computer or just doesn't load songs.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, the thought of trying to extract all the MP3s from my CD collection gives me the heeby-jeebies.

This is EXACTLY why I'm holding back for the time being. It's just far too much of a task.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm do you let it switch itself off after it's been on pause with a buncha songs queued up? I think if you physically turn it off it doesn't bother to maintain the buffer, and drains much more slowly.

xpost

ledge (ledge), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

How do I turn it off properly then? I've tried everything.

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

But I'm pissed at mine because it's not working properly with Windows and either crashes the computer or just doesn't load songs.

have you checked to see if it's the pretty common firewire problem people with windows were having?
it had something to do with a firewire chipset issue.

They released a patch for it and there's also a windows patch that helped fix it.

I actually had a problem like that when I first got mine, but after applying the two patches, everything works fine now.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ol' prune, Hold down play/pause.

Also unlike everything you used to be told about batteries, if possible don't let it fully discharge, you should try and keep it topped up. Although sounds like it's a bit late for yours... mind you I don't treat mine particularly well, it's 18 months old, and I still get about 8 hours. Maybe it's Warranty time.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Why am I incapable of making a decision?

Incapable of making a decision, eh? I should introduce you to someone I know!...oh, wait a minute...

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ledge, yeah, that's what I do. Maybe the constant running down has made it much less effective. The thing is, I can live with it having a fairly limited playing life; what angers me is that when the fucking thing is OFF it still eats up power at a ferocious pace, and THAT is unlike almost all other goods of this type.

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Since I saw an IBM laptop on Craigslist the other day for $350, I've been looking at it every morning. That one was sold, but some deal like that will come along again soon, I know it.

Which is to say, there are better things you could be buying with that money.

Kenan (kenan), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, think of all the music I could buy charities who would benefit from £120.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark you need a new battery.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's very cheap for a 40 gig, go for it at the very least you could dtick in a new battery for £25 and sell it on for 250

Ed (dali), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I get 12 to 14 hrs with my i-river, and no Jobs obeyance into the bargain.

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I would worry about whether you can get a warranty for it. I got a new one three months ago and it's already not working in such a way that I'm going to have to call the company because this issue is not addressed anywhere that I can find (haven't yet because it's a midterm week and I don't have time to sit on hold or read off personal information for two hours). And if they can't tell me how to fix it, which I expect will be the case, then I will have to send it back. SO. Buying a used one would be fine except what would you do if you couldn't get it fixed or replaced?

Maria (Maria), Friday, 19 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a suggested fix for battery problems.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 22 November 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

keeping iPod 10% free is a good idea but I think his increased battery life claims are a little exaggerated. I just ordered a replacement battery including tools for £26 all in, not a bad price to pay every year for improved battery life, improved over the original batteries as well, by about a 1/3.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 November 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone tried one of those AirPort Express things that allows you to listen to your iTunes on a stereo in another room?

mcd (mcd), Monday, 22 November 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My boss has one, it's great. I'd like to get one, a doddle to set up, you end up forgetting about it music comes out of the stereo, great.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 November 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

that was on Win XP as well.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 November 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I heart my 40G ipod I paid $400 for a few months ago. If I could get another one for >$200 my head would explode from joy.
