suzy (suzy), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, do you play drums/guitar lefty or righty?!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

don't blame me, i voted for ram jam (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

don't blame me, i voted for ram jam (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Drumming & guitaring, I play righty style. Apparently, this is strange.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too! It is strange. I wish I would have learned to play drums open-handed (on a righty setup).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Who amongst ye, when writing, do the old claw/what-I'm-writing-is-soooo-important-I-can't-let-you-attempt-to-read-it-upside-down thing where you hold your hand above the line on which you write and bend it all funkylike?

This big quiet rasta dude I used to jam with a lot was a lefty drummer who played with the MOST open/ambi style I've ever seen. He had two hi hats.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i play gtr righty.

don't blame me, i voted for ram jam (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Not That Adam Levine, Nor That Other Not That Adam Levine, but Our Adam Levine...isn't he a lefty?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Who amongst ye, when writing, do the old claw/what-I'm-writing-is-soooo-important-I-can't-let-you-attempt-to-read-it-upside-down thing where you hold your hand above the line on which you write and bend it all funkylike?

i hold my writing instrument sorta like how i hold a set of chopsticks. thumb towards me, index on top, middle finger supporting.

don't blame me, i voted for ram jam (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Lefty. Play righty. Took me until about the fifth grade to figure out why after writing I often had a big grey (or black or blue) smear on the karate-chop edge of my hand.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Left-handed people are the only true minority left on Earth." - some silly 'professor' I had at community college

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Anybody have any scissor problems?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't do that claw-writing, but I've been told my writing grip is funny. I don't do that thing where people have their fingertips on the pen, but instead my hand looks more like a fist. Actually, it's exactly the same as traditional grip for drums, except the pen is between the 1st & 2nd fingers instead of the 2nd & 3rd.

I have horrible (but legible) handwriting. Luckily, I think they've improved pen ink since I was a kid so I don't get the smearage as much.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I shoot pool lefty.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i play guitar righty and do all sporty things righty. when i first picked up a guitar i played it lefty and my friend made me switch.

oh and i do the CLAW. and for a lefty i have some decent penmanship.

i guess im ambidextrous.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I got scissor problems! How come they only make left-handed scissors for kids, or so it seems?

I can never remember which hand I shoot pool with (both are pretty bad).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i masturbate lefty.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Kev is left handed. He tried to tell me the other night that he was ambidextrous so I told him to prove it. He got all huffy and said he didn't need to prove it - he knows fine well.

Eventually he relented - I gave him a pen and paper and he proceeded to scrawl - with his right hand - his name in giant spidery pre-school handwriting.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I made myself take notes with my right-handed for a month or so in college, in an effort to improve my fine motor control. It didn't work.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm right-handed (please stop stoning me now) but I do most of the things learnt after the first few years of life with my left hand. That includes teh beating off.

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i have always had a wierd jealousy for the lefthanded. it seems so exotic and magical.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

THAT'S BECAUSE IT IS, MS. NORMALISM

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you're all gauche.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

YO

adam (adam), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i supposedly eat like someone who is left-handed, but thats it

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Also in the lefty brigade. Kind of...

Things I do left handed: write, play snooker/pool

Things I do right handed: everything else.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 November 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

SPEAKING OF WHICH, NICK.

Anybody seen that Nintendo DS shit? It's bullshit. To play the Metroid Prime game, you either have to control the D-Pad with your left hand (like we all have spent years perfecting) and the pen/stylus on the screen with your right (which is not cool!), or use the stylus in your left hand and use the D-Pad (or rather the equivalent cross-shaped arrangement of buttons that are normally on the right of the controller) with your right! It's LEFTIST. Or is that Rightist?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Another lefty here. Having mentioned that, though, that left-handed game controller looks like it would make my head explode.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I would end up holding it upside down, I just KNOW it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The DS looks like it would be a kickass RPG format (like, maybe split from viewscreen to mapscreen or menus or some shit), otherwise it looks frustrating and ridiculous.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i am lefty

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a righthander, but am completely thrilled about the fact that my about-to-be-three-year-old throws and holds a crayon with this left hand. Dude's Major League market value as a lefty will be massive!!

tobo (tobo), Friday, 19 November 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Lefty here

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 19 November 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Southpaw factizoid:
Philip Norman's "Shout" makes the claim that PaulMcCartney is right-handed and only plays lefty. This "urban legend" lives on even though Sir Paul has confirmed that he is indeed a lefty like us.

Ken L (Ken L), Saturday, 20 November 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Bend Sinister all up in here

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Saturday, 20 November 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I am left-handed and my deep emotional scars from having to learn "normal" scissors remain.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 20 November 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Donna!!

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Sunday, 21 November 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Lefty and proud of it!

I pretty much only play sports right handed. I seriously can not bat lefty. Or shoot! Or throw!!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm left handed

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I write, play guitar, open doors, eat, brush my teeth, play pool, masturbate, you name it left-handed. About the only thing I can do right handed is use scissors.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait, I can operate a mouse right-handed. I think that's it.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i bowl, mouse, frisbee, scissor right handed.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

RIGHT HANDED SCISSORS SUCK!! I hate those damn things!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that I think of it, I open doors with whatever hand is most convenient, but I do bowl and throw frisbees lefty.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i pet kittens left handed

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I eat finger food lefty because J1mmy th0mas pissed on my right hand when I was about 6 and I'm not sure if it's clean enough to use yet.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I write, eat, jerk off, wipe my ass, drum, use knives, kick, skateboard, and maybe a few other things left-handed/footed, but throw and play guitar right-handed (as I might've said once I started playing when I was 8 and wanted to play left-handed but my teacher didn't want to teach me with the strings treble to bass and was too lazy to switch the strings around for me so I learned right-handed. No wonder I suck). I shoot right in hockey and golf and bat right but I'm not convinced those activities are left or right-handed in nature, especially hockey where most right-handers seem to shoot left (I play goal with the stick in my left hand, which I think is a lefty trait). My dad is profoundly left-handed whereas my mom is right-handed. My stomach is upset.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope nobody jerks off left-handed and uses scissors right-handed AT THE SAME TIME.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i am not left-handed.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Then you suck!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I brake with my left foot! omg can I join now?

Daffyd, the only gay in the village (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, inline skates, specifically.

Daffyd, the only gay in the village (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm left handed AND I masturbate left handed AND I wipe through the legs

drunk remy is not logged in on set, Sunday, 21 November 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

my name means "right-hand man"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 21 November 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah! That bum cleaning thread is long gone but I paid attention to my wiping practices a little more closely and noticed that I am a hybrid wiper - sort of doing a bit of a swirl around the sphincter rather than a unidirectional wipe. PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT!

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 21 November 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If you could get high off buttwipe I'm sure we all would.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Sunday, 21 November 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesterday I bought a Christmas present to send to an ex-bf of mine(we've remained good friends, probably because we now live thousands of miles apart) which included, amongst other little things, a pair of left-handed scissors and a left-handed ruler since he's a southpaw. I was wondering whether this might have been a silly idea but having now seen this thread and the comments that a few of you don't get on very well with right-handed scissors, I think I might have made a good choice of gift after all, hurrah!

C J (C J), Sunday, 21 November 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm left handed, though I do lots of things right-handed as my left arm is a bit fucked following a childhood accident.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 21 November 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

A good friend of mine has a dog named Lefty. He's a very sweet dog. I even worked up a song for him once, to the tune of "Brandy."

xpost
where did you get the scissors? Maybe I can put them on my wish list. The ruler too.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 22 November 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Lefty/you're a fine dog/what a good pet/you would be???

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Monday, 22 November 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

C J (C J), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

do americans call righthanders "northpaws"?

gem (trisk), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

no.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder what the origin of the phrase is? in australia we have the slang term "molly duker" for lefthanders, i believe this has something to do with boxing and being able to throw unexpected punches.

gem (trisk), Monday, 22 November 2004 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Southpaw

Southpaw has its origins in 1880s' baseball slang. Baseball diamonds were often arranged so the batters would face east, to avoid looking into the afternoon sun. The pitcher's left hand, or paw, would therefore be on the southern side.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 22 November 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Raises left hand, mumbles something about tin openers and creativity.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 22 November 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Using the rating method of Oldfield, Laterality quotients range from 100 (right handed) to -100 (left handed)"

"This subject's laterality quotient is: -100.0
Placing this subject in the 10th left decile."

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the info, CJ.

Can we have theme music, a theme song? "Left of the Dial" maybe?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Left Handed - Lali Puna

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

another word for us lefties is "sinistrals"...how cool is that?

http://www.io.com/~cortese/left/southpaw.html

waxyjax (waxyjax), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

that's cool but not that surprising because i think sinister means left in latin doesn't it?

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

see jordan's post upthread

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

haha. also thanks for your southpaw link above cindy.

i vaguely remember reading about lefthanders were thought to be mildly evil, that's how 'sinister' got its contemporary connotations...

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

lefty me.
