Why are mags aimed at women so retarded? Why?

Teenaged girls get More and Sugar. Clearly, aimed at someone with a two digit IQ and a need to get laid. Quickly. Soon. Then you have the rest of the motly bunch for young women – Reveal and all that bollocks. “Kerry McFadden on her marriage split up” – “how to make him love you more”. What a lot of old toss. Women read this crap too.

C.Taylor., Friday, 19 November 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, because Details and FHM are on par with The Atlantic Monthly and the New Yorker.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Bust and Bitch and Ballcrusher?

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Zoo? Nuts? better than Heat?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

bilious, unfunny, boring. 1.7 pts.

:| (....), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you're being generous. 1.1

beanz (beanz), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ive seen worse, really.

:| (....), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

is this thread aimed at women?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Bust is still pretty good.

Ballcrusher, however, has been sucking . . .well you know.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This wasn’t meant to be funny though. It’s just a reasonable point. I mean, fair enough – thickos and squaddies might read Nuts or whatever but not any normal people. But the girl mags are hideous. “Look at Paris Hilton’s cellulite etc” – it’s all just a way to make the gullible, stupid female readers to feel even worse about themselves and go on a crash diet and/ or end up getting preggers because Sugar says if you’ve not had it by 15 then you’re a minger. Or some such nonsense.

C,Taylor, Friday, 19 November 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the answer's obvious: $$

Who are the advertisers? Cosmetics companies, clothes, etc. It's to their benefit to make women feel poorly about themselves so they'll spend money.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

women's magazines: look at Paris Hilton's cellulite!

men's magazines: phwoar Paris Hilton eh lads??!

a loser is us

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

so what do non-thickos and non-squaddies boys read?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

thickos, squaddies >> normal people (guys line)
but girls 'all' read more and sugar? naaah. none of the girls I knew when I was growin up would have.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I disagree with you on two levels here.

First off, I think you're missing the point of these magazines. They're supposed to be entertainment, escapism. You want something more challenging that isn't a book? Buy The Ecconomist, buy a newspaper. The fluffy bits of these mags are essentially an aid to daydreaming. You should also consider the many people who, reading a very lighthearted article about work or relationships or whatever, will be thinking 'thank God, it's not just me'. People want to see aspects of their day to day lives written about, it's comforting.

Secondly, when was the last time you read a magazine aimed at females properly? They do all carry more serious articles be that advice on sex, rape or nutrition or on women in other cultures or extreme circumstances. Studies by, yes, the magazines themselves, but also by independant bodies, show that teenage girls get the bulk of their sex education not from schools or parents, but from magazines. Despite the Daily Mail hype, the journalists on these titles place a huge emphasis on standing up to peer/ boyfriend pressure and sticking to the laws of the land and the laws of safe sex. I know, I've written for several magazines aimed at teenage girls and women, although none of the titles you mention. If a copy of Sugar or whatever prevents one unplanned pregnancy in a scared little girl, surely that's doing some good?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

aimed at females properly?

took two reads to follow that...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i still want to know what is a considered an intelligent magazine that is aimed at boys

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think women's magazines are fascinating.

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

NME ha ha ha

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

In a society that promotes sex as any other consumable, easy to come by product (rather than as something two adults connect through) I do not think there is a place for any magazine – aimed at young girls – whose focus is on shagging. It is only going to pressurise other young people, male or female, into relationships that – really – they would be better off leaving for a while. Or are such things as an education not important anymore?

I don’t know what non-squadies read. It would be nice to think your average, or garden, squadie, picks up The Independent now and again instead of Loaded wouldn’t it?

C*Taylor, Friday, 19 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG you are so boring it is hurting me!

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you my parents?

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Your first para has a point. To be honest, I'm still the opinion that wisdom and innocence can coexist.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don’t know what non-squadies read. It would be nice to think your average, or garden, squadie, picks up The Independent now and again instead of Loaded wouldn’t it?

so you're saying girls don't read The Independent?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Glamour I'll give credit as usually having one good article per issue - something that touches on an important issue for women. The other stuff - that realtionship crap? -- can just go in the garbage. I've known plenty of staffers for mags like this and most of that stuff they make up anyway.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

are gay men allowed in the Army yet? maybe the barracks are littered with discarded copies of Attitude.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are there squaddies in your garden?

beanz (beanz), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

he's under military observation like the freak he is

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

heh. Nice weekend you guys...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

so mags aimed at women are retarded because there exists mags like sugar and more, on the other hand, even though you can't think of an intelligent magazine aimed at men, not all magazines aimed at men are retarded because the newspaper Independent, which is not aimed at any gender, exists??/

wtf???!?!??!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Girls like clothes. Men like girls with no clothes. Hence, magazines.

Actually, jocelyn OTM -- Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker are religious reads for me. All other magazines suck.

Kenan (kenan), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i think what c taylor is trying to say ultimately is that he's desperate to c on a young v's t's (and if her dad's a colonel then all the better)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The point of the thread is that girls that read More and Sugar are a bit dim really.

C*Taylor, Friday, 19 November 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The point of the thread is that girls that read More and Sugar are a bit dim really.

And have a "need to get laid. Quickly. Soon"

They're reading the wrong mags if they want to do it quickly that much.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And men who read Fango are zitty 47 year old virgins.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

fango really should include a fashion advice section regarding shirts that are three sizes too big

ken c (ken c), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a terrible thing to say about Tep.

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Christ, have I just wasted a serious answer on Calum? Is this because you've just had a rejection letter from one of these magazines?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He wanted to write a feature on Holly Valance, they laughed at him.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You said it for all of us, Anna.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)
