kissing cousins (for reals)

I find this oddly poignant. Especially the message board. Not for any personal reasons, I barely know my cousins. It's just a weird sort of socio-cultural limbo, like this thing that's right on the border of acceptability depending on where you live. I like the way the site has all these trivia facts about various famous people who married their cousins, or whose parents were cousins (Einstein, apparently).

I've never even really thought about the issue. I guess I can't really see why it should be a big deal, but at the same time I have some automatic recoil from it. Which I guess is just cultural conditioning.

My cousins are bogans, hence kissing them would reduce my intelligence by osmosis.

Daffyd, the only gay in the village (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine are stark raving religous. So uh.. ew.

(and on the other side, bogans as well).

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

every last one of my first cousins and most of my second cousins are married (and also redneck bogans). so i guess it's not an issue for me.

gem (trisk), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This bloke didn't marry his cousin, he married his identical bloody twin.

Don't get me wrong, they're both reasonably hawt, but I couldn't fathom marrying something that looked exactly like me. Ick.

Daffyd, the only gay in the village (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

uh... from the article you link it says they are 1st cousins. stay off the PCP.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i think he was joking?

gem (trisk), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, joking. As in, 'christ they look similar, in fact so much bloody so that they might as well be identical facking twins.' Hence my point about marrying yourself.

God.

Daffyd, the only gay in the village (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

also surely everyone would realise that identical twins would share their gender

gem (trisk), Monday, 22 November 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say "err, identical twins have to be of the same sex." YOUR JOKE FAILED.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh you pedants!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, to clarify, i meant my comment in the sense that, surely everyone would realise that adam was joking, because real identical twins are the same sex.

gem (trisk), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor Adam :(

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

some guy I worked with once wanted to get with his cousin so I developed a theory based around some disproven notions of biology and passages from the Old Testament that "allowed" him to go forth and copulate without guilt. I called it "the incest loophole"

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

My cousins are all wacky Pentecostals or wacky Baptists. And unattractive.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 22 November 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I know one person who had a one-night stand with her cousin when they were both in their late thirties. They had, apparently, fancied each other from the time they were about twelve. After the one-night stand her cousin was so freaked out by what they had done that he moved to London and she never saw him again.

Then again, I know another set of cousins who moved to Canada and got married and they're happy and everyone in the family seems pretty cool about it.

I can't imagine fancying any of my cousins. Not that they're not objectively attractive, I just can't imagine it.
