When I got to work this morning there were treats on the desk for the department, including chex mix. I wondered how many people in my office would protest if I expressed my dislike of chex mix. What say you, ILX?

I say - what's a chex mix?

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind.

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ew. i hate chex mix. it's chex cereal mixed with pretzel bits and tossed with savoury seasoning, really greasy and wrong and horrible.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to say I wondered how this nasty shit ever caught on .. but then I read this:

Chex mix

One of the great American food company traditions is promoting one's products through recipes. Period cookbooks and women's magazine ads from the 1950s and 1960s confirm the idea of combining manufactured cereal with other products and toasting them with butter was popular. According to one source, Chex Mix (aka TV Mix, Chex Party Mix) was introduced in 1955 If so? The Ralston Purina company was not the first to market the idea. The 1950 edition of Betty Crocker's Cook Book [General Mills] has a recipe for "Buttered or Cheese Kix," Kix being a General Mills brand cereal.

"Traditional Chex Brand Party Mix. This crunchy nibble hit the party circuit in 1955. In St. Louis. There's a good reason for this. The recipe was dreamed up by the savvy folks ar Ralston Purina--a St. Louis company--as a way to push its Chex Brand cereals (wheat, corn, and rice). Today, it's a staple in millions of homes from Maine to Monterey. Some cooks fiddle with the classic recipe, loading it with a favorite nut, perhaps..."
---The American Century Cookbook: The Most Popular Recipes of the 20th Century, Jean Anderson [Clarkson Potter:New York] 1997 (p. 36-7)

.. And now I'm thankful that it wasn't buttered Kix mix that caught on.

purina is most famous for making dog food, which should tell you something.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Chex mix is great. It's the worcestershire sauce.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

How do we rate Muddy Buddies?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, but the pre-packaged version of it has *way* too many pretzels.

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ain't nothin' wrong with Chex Mix. But I'll eat just about any salty snack. Jordan OTM about the worcestershire, though.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was 19 I had gallstones, and what made me have to go into surgery was a night of snacking on chex mix. So therefore dud.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i love it. best of all, if you eat a red halls cough drop immediately before or after eating chex mix, the taste in your mouth is exactly like the taste of shrimp! double trouble!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, isn't it about time to go back to your "regular" name?

Oh, and Chex Mix is pretty classic, but yeah, too many pretzels in the pre-mixed one.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I do like the bagel chip bits though. But I like those anyway.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If we're talking about the pre-packaged Chex mix/Gardetto's stuff, why haven't they made bags filled entirely with rye chips yet?!

(those brown ones are rye chips, right?)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 November 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep. The pre-packaged ones are a little salty for my taste. I had an aunt who made her own and distributed them at Christmas to all the family members. Those were excellent. When I do buy them nowadays, I pour in a jar's worth of unsalted peanuts and down it all with brew. I think there's some in the pantry right now. Hmmm.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn! the bag's been open for some time and they have the consistency of raisins.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

neat! I didn't know this. I can walk to the Purina building from my apartment in downtown STL. One more fine gastronomical achievement for the gateway city!
