So, WHAT DO YOU WEAR TO WORK?

Either describe or post PIC!

THe reason I ask is that I have realized I dress like complete shit to go to the office.. today I am wearing these hideous grey trousers with a black and white stripey top... the whole thing clashes something awful, but most of the time I don't give a shit! If I worked with a HOT D00D I might try to look better, but.. pah. Anyway! So! Tell us!

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Same things I always wear. Jeans with a t-shirt or untucked button-down. Some black pants every now and then to switch it up.

papa november (papa november), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I wear my normal clothes, though I try to avoid the worst excesses of 'colourblind homeless person and messy eater to boot' that surface in my leisure wardrobe...

I really wish I had some gorgeous smart clothes for work. I'd feel all motivated then I'm sure.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

dress pants and dress shirts. occassionally some cords.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! You can't look worse than me. Working from home screws with your dress sense. I am wearing a black t-shirt and a pair of wide-legged black sweat pants I bought in an effort to look slightly presentable when answering the door to the postman. This may not sound too bad, until you realise I haven't showered today (3:00pm GMT) and I have crazy bag lady hair. I tend to get dressed in the evenings for the benefit of those I live with.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Grey hoodie, jeans & trainers, pretty much exactly the same as I wear outside of work.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

T-SHIRT, TRACKY BOTTOMS. ANYTHING I WEAR GETS COVERED W/OIL AND WD-40.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I work a variety of strange shifts. Today, for example, is a regular day shift, so while I'm still wearing jeans and sneakers (black vans, if you must know), I'm also wearing a button down shirt (I look like the guy who comes to repair your xerox machine). When i'm scheduled for an overnight shift, however, it's not like I'm likely to be dealing with editors (or anyone, for that matter) in a face-to-face capacity, so it's a bit more relaxed (Butthole Surfer t-shirt? Why not?) That said, it's generally a good idea to look at least quasi-presentable. Ya never know what's gonig to happen.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I wear anything I want. Since I don't like coming in to work, and nobody sees me all day, I dress worse for work than I do to go just about anywhere else, save the laundromat. Jeans, t-shirts, mismatched sweaters and shoes, white socks with black pants... this is the one place that I really don't care.

Kenan (kenan), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm at work right now and I'm wearing olive green cords with frayed bottoms, scuffed red shoes, a black jumper from Primark and a tatty red hair tie. And this is one of my more respectable outfits.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a few button-up shirts that I alternate, a couple of sweater-y things if it's cold, a couple of pairs of really cheap-o slacks from Target or wherever, a couple of pairs of corduroys, and one pair of really really cheap dress shoes. Basically I look like shit. I don't even know why we have a dress code, it's a closed office, no customers come in here, I just talk to everyone on the phone.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I look like a typical person who works in Finance. Don't go for the non-matching collar shirts, but cannot abide having pockets on shirts. Don't wear a tie most the time now (can't be arsed) but that'll change next year with a new job). Suit. Smart, but I actually like dressing like this to work.

3underscore (___), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also a suit but with a tie. Also never non-matching collar. Cufflinks. I Am Not A Spiv. I hate wearing a suit but I meet people who wear them all the time at work, so I kinda have to.

beanz (beanz), Monday, 22 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Same clothes I wear for the rest of the week. So, today I wore: very old blue jeans, blue jumper, pinkish striped shirt, black t-shirt. Librarians don't do suits.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucky for me.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's one of the main reasons I work in a library!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I love wearing a suit, and I look kinda hott in one, but I couldn't deal with the attendant ironing/buffing/dry cleaning (though if I had a decent enough job to deserve a suit I could probably afford my own dwarf cleaner to do it for me).

Ol' prune face (Mark C), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm in a suit today because the CEO came to visit. although I had too much work to go and bore myself in the meeting with him, so it was kind of all for naught.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I really ought to get a suit sometime.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The shop I work in has no dress code beyond "clean and somewhat presentable", so I alternate between sweater & workpants business-casual and jeans & t-shirts casual-casual.

I think I'd need a whole new wardrobe if I ever changed jobs.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 22 November 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

We aren't supposed to wear jeans or tracksuitery. So today I am wearing a pink t shirt, a black skirt (flash, with little metal stud detail) and a grey cardie. Black shoes and stockings.

Ocasionally I worry I will get told off for showing too much bust. This is not cos of exhibitionism but because I have been unable to find many nice new tops since last summer when I was rather smaller. The buttons are starting pull apart on my nicest shirt.

isadora (isadora), Monday, 22 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Lately it's been semi-dressy gray trousers or beige cords, a knit top, and a sweater. In the summer I wore skirts more often.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 22 November 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend to go fairly smart - smarter than most people in the office - because I like to take off my work clothes as soon as I get home and put on comfy jeans or joggies or something. It's psychological, see? Take off the clothes, take off the day. Today I'm wearing black knee-high boots, black opaque tights, a black, red and beige patterned skirt and a red wraparound top with a black vest underneath. I'll wear jeans to work if it's the last day before I go on holiday, or if we have an away day.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've started wearing whatever I want because the first time I wore jeans to work I pleaded with my boss "please don't hassle me because I don't look smart", and he just laughed and said he didn't care just as long as I wore 'something'.

I try not to wear tops with huge logos on though, quite easy as I don't own any.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I wear what I'd wear going out. work has a very competetive dressing atmosphere.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that said there is not that big a line between what I wear going out and what I wear in the day or at home or whatever.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

My coworkers all noticed the day I threw out my velcro shoes and was wearing different shoes. Although now I just wear black doc martens. And I only have 2 pair of black slacks I alternate between. And one pair has staples all along the cuff that I was seen stapling together at a meeting because I had noticed the hem fell out. That was over 2 months ago and I just restaple as I see fit. On top I just wear whatever is not a t shirt. I am supposed to wear a suit. I am not meant to work really.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My work attire is all over the place, but usually never too scruffy. Granted, this is my last week here, so I've let everything slide. Today I'm wearing dark jeans and an old grey sweater (i still feel wrong saying 'jumper'). Sometimes I wear a suit with a tie, sometimes without - this only happens when I have client meetings, and the tie issue depends on the client. Most times I'm in 'office casual' mode with a dress shirt and decent trousers (not jeans). The shirts are a mix of french cuffs and button cuffs, but never the non-matching collar/shirt thing. That's for the real city wankers. Although I do have a pin-stripe suit (granted, it's a subtle stripe).

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Today: Junior Levis, black Converse, old David Bowie T-shirt from the Heathen tour that I wore to bed last night and liked so much that I decided to keep on today, slate gray zip-up hoodie. Also: Acqua di Parma lavender perfume as part of my new scent-wearing experiment.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

aujourd'hui: ripped-up Mclusky shirt, Paul Frank knee socks, DDR army knickers, high-school wrestling team cardigan from 1947. However, my boss is NUTS. These things tend to cancel each other out

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

YAY MORLEY TIMMONS!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you say that now :)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Temping on an industrial gig today, and man am I dressed for the part: khaki-colored Wranglers, brown short-sleeve Dickies work shirt, black government-issue steel-toe boots. I'll probably be wearing the same thing for my newsroom job tonight.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Business casual, so a button down shirt and decent pants and black or brown shoes. Sometimes I wear jeans, though. Today I'm wearing a grey suit/lt blue shirt/orange tie though, since I had a meeting with clients.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

last time i temped on an industrial gig:

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that's G.P.O. disguised as me, basically.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Normally just wear jeans but today, oh fuck, today, after many years of cycling to work, I've finally managed to forget to bring a change of clothes with me. So instead of jeans, I'm mincing around the office in pair of 3/4-length lycra tights, quite shiny ones too... They're great on a bike, but now I feel like I'm dressed for a sodding panto. Not good at all. They also smell a bit funny after years of abuse. Expecting a day of wolf-whistles (can wolves whistle?) and arse-pinching. Oh dear. Luckily no meetings, but my stint at the helpdesk might be even more embarrasing than it usually is. Someone please shoot me now.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Most days: black trousers, blue shirt, maroon tie, black waistcoat.
Some days: blue check trousers, blue striped apron, white chefs jacket.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Archel, if you ever wanted to figure out who NickB is, today's the day - he'll be dead easy to spot.

(or do the pair of you regularly meet for coffee and academic banter?)

He's allergic to lettuce (Mark C), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Today = beige Diesel cords, black Fred Perry, black Nike Air Max. I look gr8.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I was just thinking about that Mark. Maybe I will hunt you down and wolf whistle at you, Nick.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinch my arse though, and I'll probably cry. I'll be dead easy to spot, but I'm not bloody going outside again till it gets very dark indeed.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

today it's brown New balance 574s, brown uniqlo cords (a bit scruffy - I need some new ones), a blue with claret trim lacoste polo and a stone island zip up cardie - pretty much par for the course these days, seem to be able to get away with most things in last month of employment. New job = entirely casual - yay!

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't worry Nick - have you seen the way some of the academic staff dress? Like bag ladies, half of them. And that's just the men.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, were I to be wearing grimy velvet loonpants, I'd have no worries. As it is, I feel about as appropriately dressed as Peter Pan at a soup kitchen.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, moderately smart most of the time, unless feeling skanky. I don't see the public in my office, but if I had to walk across the square looking rough I'd feel terrible. Plus there are attractive/posh doctors to compete with, but the multitude of people wandering around in scrubs in the main hospital counteract that somewhat.

Today: black pinstripe turnups, red v-neck t-shirt under thin black stretchy v-neck jumper, RED PLEATED ROUND-TOE KITTEN-HEEL SHOES (which are the reason for the rest of the outfit, really). Yesterday: beige cord knee-length a-line skirt, black scoop-neck t-shirt, brown slinky cardigan, black pointy long boots.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 25 November 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have given up wearing a tie except when I have to go to any reasonably formal meetings (i.e. with people beyond my division) but otherwise I am in a suit, with black shoes and white shirt.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Update, after today's lunch shift the white jacket is now somewhat variegated.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, are you FoH sometimes then? How does that work?

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 25 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm front of house most of the time. I'm the assistant manager. But being of a culinary bent I have a fairly high input into the menus and given that I'm getting fed up of the general public I'm training as a chef as well, with a view to getting in the kitchen full time as soon as I can afford to take the pay cut.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep meaning to write a publog post about chef training. It's interesting.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

you really should it'd be very interesting. I'd love to do it myself apart from the pay cut and the not being able to deal with people shouting at me very well.

Someone is doing something of a similar ilk on E.gullet too.

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and the hours...

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Chefs hours are far more sociable than FoH though, it's another factor in my reasoning. The chefs are generally out by about ten, I get out between midnight and two in the morning.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

what's on teh menu now then Matt?

(sorry for the derail everyone)

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Today's lunch two course (basic bistro fare, bear in mind this only costs 6.95)
Starters
Soup of teh day (Mushroom and Brie), Pate, Warm black pudding and bacon salad with red wine dressing, artichoke hearts hollandaise, tempura chillies w/ coriander mayonnaise.
Mains
Chicken breast w/ chilli salsa, Penne with stilton and greens, Hot pork loin baguette, steak-frites bearnaise (two quid supplement, Lamb hotpot.

Doing hollandaise to order on a busy lunch is a kick in the dick.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oh fuck

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I met a chef while travelling and he told me a cheats way of doing hollandaise in a blender, I'm buggered if I can remeber though,

Tempura chillis though? nice

I'll go for the baguette right now too.

also - nice trendy black pudding salad ;o)

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha this is the North of England. We go through black pudding like you wouldn't believe. It might be reet trendy down south though, lad, oop here it's just scran.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Pastry? Good God no. I spotted a commis trying to put carrots in it the other day and nearly killed. Luckily for him the fucker didn't keep his knives sharp, so I sacked him for that instead < / dinner rush >

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you've just got yrself a booking there lad.

when are we next in Chorley?

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt has been sounding more and more like my step-dad as this thread has progressed... that last post was downright eerie. Most disturbing.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Archel I read your post on the "Who's your daddy thread" and my frst thought was how your step-dad sounds like most of the chefs I've ever worked with...it must be rubbing off.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope not too much... he for one is covered in burns and scars, has a recurring wrist injury and fucked up high blood pressure, and last month had a (minor) brain haemorrhage. Not a low-stress career.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the beauty of working at a college is that i can dress any ol' way i want to. the problem with this is, there's no encouragement to dress in anything better than a pair of jeans, sneakers and a tshirt. i look young for my age [see the most recent "what do you look like?" thread] and i am often mistaken for a student.

lately i have tried to dress a little bit more fashionable, if not for my sake, then for the hot workstudy student that [i think] has a crush on me.
