huh? what's that?

download VLC (www.google.com) and use it to play the DVD. then use grab to capture the screen. remember to pause using the space bar rather than using the pause button on the on-screen controller, to avoid annoying 'pause' legend in the corner of the screen.

set playback to de-interlace for best results.

if you want to do something else, snapz is a good shareware program (30 days free) that can capture screen shots, moving video, whatever you want. try versiontracker.

ok cozen i downloaded and installed VLC. it won't seem to play DVDs, and i can't get it to quit unless i force quit. does this sound familiar? if so do you have any tips? otherwise i might just uninstall it.

I got ScreenShot Plus (shareware, $5 suggested, but the download is the full version, not a limited demo) a few months ago when I wanted to get some frames from a Devo DVD.

i tried using screenshotplus, but when i try to grab an image from dvdplayer, the image just ends up black. there must be some kind of protection built into the application. or is it the disc itself?

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

no wait, that was precisely the frame i wanted to grab, problem solved

Dude, I could make you some black frames in Photoshop pretty easy.

"black frames" sounds like a garage revival band.

i was reading around on the interweb, i suspect the problem is rooted in the video card--something about processing the dvd in such a way that screen grabs are impossible. i'm not sure i want to believe that this is true, however.

Yes, I use Snapz Pro as well, and though I have to go in with photoshop to remove the application window and scrolling bars, it works nicely. Forget VLC, it's a heartless program that always pauses three seconds after you want it to and can't frame advance.

vlc is annoying for some stuff but the streaming support rules

the black-bit-where-the-picture-should-be is a function of the overlay thing that video cards do - the picture is written straight to video memory so the window system doesn't even know about it and can't grab it.

i'm more familiar with linux and mplayer but that has a flag '-vo x11' which says that video out should go via the x11 thing and this way X can see the picture and will be grabable via screenshot programs (although most dvd players for linux (er, xine anyway) have snapshot capabilities built in) (i tend to capture and then use avidemux which'll let me single step through frames). there might be a 'don't use overlay' option in VLC.

ok, videolan FAQ:

1.10. How can I take screenshots?

To take normal screen capture of the video displayed by VLC:

* Under XFree, add the -V x11 option to the command line. You'll have to find a X11 screenshot utility somewhere.
* Under Windows, add the --nooverlay option to the command line and use Prt Sc button to put a screenshot on your pasteboard. You can then paste this picture in a picture editor or a Word document or something.
* On Mac OS X just press command-option-3.

you know you can set the size/borders of the image you want to capture in snapz right? you can just select the image and not the app window if you want!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That's true. Doesn't really matter though since I always have to resize it.
