Can I get a list of thoughtful, left-of-center gifts that might fall into the 'less-than-$100' category? I'm looking for stuff that isn't so obvious. Handmade, unique items are a plus. Something like this or this, perhaps?
So far, I'm getting my pops the Goodbye, Babylon box set and I think my brother or bro-in-law might get this Maisonneuve Magazine Box Set. Both of these things pay a lot of attention to the presentation what with the wooden boxes and added ephemera that, in my opinion, add a specialness to the overall package. Any other ideas along these lines? Or any other lines, for that matter?

So this year everyone I know is getting a homemade present. This a)saves me tons of cash and b)exercises my artistic skills.

my parents have devised an elaborate gift-giving scheme to try to save everyone money - we now have a very complicated set of step-children etc so it is all a bit confusing and exhausting and uncertain, wondering if one should get a gift for someone, trying to suss out different peoples' expectations - but it verges on the ridiculous when you receive two Excel attachments specifying who is giving to whom

like a not so secret santa?? thats nuts. this is your family. they owe you for putting up with them all year and you owe them for the same reason.

sunny the problem is that there are two second wives, two sets of step-kids, two uncles, a cousin etc all converging at the same time
the lovely emma b's family has a much more sensible approach to gift-giving: parents give stuff to their kids, kids get a couple of small things for their parents, and you're done.. whereas in my family people kind of get something, no matter how small, for each other person who's going to be around - it has become exhausting and expensive

the Sandisk Sansa Clip would make a pretty sweet high-end stocking stuffer - it's like an iPod shuffle but has a screen, doesn't require iTunes, is ridiculously tiny, and costs $60 for the two-gig version

Home made presents can be great! I've been busy making small bottles of flavoured vodka (buy cheapest supermarket own-brand stuff and add crushed-up sweeties to it) and I'll be teaming these up with home-made chocolate shot glasses. Wrapped in cellophane and ribbons, it looks very acceptable.
