t''t, Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

does sinker ever speculate about the point of the extra point in the title? I mean usually it's "..." but Anderson made it very specifically "If....", it's in the title, is it significant?

that's my point on the point

filmgruff, Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

but Anderson made it very specifically "If...."

erm, anderson seems to've made it very specifically "if....", even - no capital letter there in the film's title.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

k someone shld alert imdb then

filmgruff, Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

imdb -wot's that?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

internet movie database innit

where it has this handy clue:

"The title of the film was suggested by the secretary of Memorial Films when she overheard Lindsay Anderson and David Sherwin endlessly debating possible titles."

hmmmm....

filmgruff, Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was two dots.

Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a sec, is this book one of those 33 1/3 series about Bread?

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

A copy editor writes: four dots is grammatically possible - an ellipsis followed by a full stop. It is standard when an ellipsis ends a paragraph. Film titles, however, don't usually have full stops....

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

this is out today? cool. I wonder if any shops will have it here.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"an ellipsis followed by a full stop" - a nice summation of the film

filmgruff, Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the book has 4 on the cover
http://www.bfi.org.uk/competitions/images/if.jpg

the website that has that picture put three (although the website seems to have died in between me seeing it and linking it now)
http://www.bfi.org.uk/competitions/if.php

poster on imdb shows 4
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063850/

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I always assumed the title to refer to the Kipling poem. In which case, the ellipsis followed by a full stop makes the best sense.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, i want this for Xmas!

youn, Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone else used/got imdb pro? It's fucking great - there's a starmeter which ranks people in films according to how many searches have been done in their name.

He's allergic to lettuce (Mark C), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

truly we are living in the best of all possible worlds!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 November 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's just four dots for the sake of it, or by mistake, like the black and white nudie sequences.

Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(slocki, r u on xtesi or samthung?!)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 November 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I want this for Christmas too. I think I killed the other If.... thread by asking about music, but I'm gonna do it again anyway - Does anyone know where I can get the music (some or all) for this film? Soulseek would be nice if anyone has any...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 29 November 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the full soundtrack album doesn't exist (partly to do with soundtracks not being recognised as records to the extent that they are today).
