Yeah, obviously it's a different 'guy' and the kids don't care. But isn't there a subversive element missing from the new version?

and is it just me, or does he look like Frank Skinner in the first photo?

wasn't part of the thing with Basil Brush meant to be that he had drunk a bottle of sherry before the programme started (and that's a lot of sherry for a very small fox)?

I recall the original (i saw it in the 80s, so how 'original' is doubtfull) as a kid and loved it. Without the use of parent aimed inuendo he seemd to make the show a series of utterly clean yet strangely profane injokes. Basically he got the kids to laugh both with and at him.

"Dirty Gertie from number 30" was mentioned a lot!

i've just learnt from TV that his favourite catchphrase is "boom boom"

I cannot comment on the show itself. However, the second picture looks as if it is supposed to be a squirrel, not a fox.

The first one - a career spanning classic TV and probably my favourite album from my childhood. Versus one that tries to be too real.

He could be the same guy. He's just 20 years older. He looks like a dirty old man in a mac.

KeithW (kmw), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I was slightly disappointed when I found out he wasn't a brush.

Basil Brush saying "It's dirty Gertie from number 30" is the clearest memory of crap Saturday night telly that I have. If I ever got to be a talking head on "Best Saturday evening kids shows ever", that would be the bit I would mention a lot whilst giggling in a "look at me, I'm clever, I remember stuff from about five minutes ago" manner.

The Basil Brush Show, whose star is famous for his "Boom Boom!" catchcry, first hit TV screens in 1970 and was screened in Australia.

It ran until the early 1980s but was revived a few years ago.

It is broadcast in Australia on the ABC.

Australia, Australia, Australia, Australia, Australia, Australia, Australia

When did travellers stop selling heather/pegs?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 17 March 2008 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure it wasn't long ago that I avoided someone selling me 'lucky heather' - but maybe they were 'faux' gypsies.
