Finding out you're being shunted sideways to a job you really don't want, whether you like it or not

Its either that or face redundancy, just before Christmas. Fucking bastards.

Has this ever happened to you? I'm seriously considering taking the redundancy money and walking away tomorrow, but I very much doubt there'll be too many people hiring before Christmas.

(Yes I know you can tell who I am, but you can't be too careful)

it hasn't, but its happened to people i have to now work with. there is now resentment on BOTH sides (me & my colleague for having someone foisted on us, them for being foisted) that makes the whole work environment pretty poisonous, and often the resentment is focussed on the poor respective foisted parties rather than the management who engineered it...

I've been made redundant just before xmas but I am in a bit of a diff boat, as I've worked here for almost six years so I am getting a *very* generous tax free payout, plus half my long service leave. It'll last me six months unemployed without resorting to the dole, if it has to.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes this has happened to me. It wasn't even a pure lateral move in my book, I felt it was slightly inferior to my original position. I stayed, worked my way out of that job and back into the job I had been in (and then into the next job above my original position, where I had wanted to be in the first place). I was happy to overcome the adversity, but in retrospect it was a waste of 2 years. Good luck.

If you're careful, redundancy money lasts longer than you think it would.

Seriously, getting made redundant is not the worst thing that can happen to you. Think of it as a way to make a career move laterally instead of being shunted.

The thing is, I don't think that redundancy money is going to last that long at Christmas, and I'd only get what I'd be paid up til the end of December. Accepting redundancy is not an option, really - in the cold light of... whatever it is when you've been awake since 3am.

Essentially, as of the end of this week, my job is not going to be there any more, and there will be no prospect of me doing what I actually want to do within this company, probably ever again.

Maybe its a good thing, maybe I've been in the comfort zone too long, and that's stopped me moving on earlier, as I should have. Maybe its a kick up the arse - take the job, which I know will be boringly undemanding, sit out the last three weeks of the year and really hammer the jobhunting in the new year (as I was intending to anyway). I'll have to drop them in it just as they've filled what is really a pretty key position, but fuck it. Still, pretty depressing way to end the year.

There is actually another offer in the pipeline, but its dependent on a couple of higher management things happening. If that goes ahead, then everything's fine, but I'm not banking on it.

Well, the other option is to be shunted into the yucky position but only stay there until January, when you can start looking for a real job. ~it may be a test to try your patience, but at least you won't be penniless over Xmas.

Redundancies due here, too. We find out just how many next Tuesday. But it looks like I might be able to take reduced hours/work from home more and do more freelance work for myself. But because of the type of organisation we are, there's unlikely to be more than the statutory redundancy pay (1 week for every year you've worked there) - and nothing at all for people who've only just been recruited in the insane expansion over the last year. Morale is not high.

This happened to me. I was then mostly unemployed for the next 18 months and went through all my savings. Be careful Trayce.

'Voluntary' redundancies being 'offered' here too, soon. Probably won't affect me but by god morale is low. I've decided on a policy of not talking to people about it because it just degenerates into petty moaning and makes everyone feel worse.

I say take the sideways move and try to get another job ASAP - always better to be job-seeking from a position of employment even if you do have redundancy money.

six months pass...
This may well be happening to me soon. Our big boss last week made some organisational changes and put a chart up on the projector explaining the new structure.

Him: "Any questions?"
Me: "I notice my job isn't on there"
Him: "Yes, we'll be discussing that within the next few weeks"
Me: *gulp*

Hurrah for management! I find out my job doesn't exist anymore in a room full of my colleagues (all of whose jobs are still there) without anyone having the courtesy to warn me first.

I've been told not to worry, and that something else will be there for me, but my job as it exists at the moment isn't and I'm not very happy about it.

Oh dear. :-(((((

Oh, that's rotten.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 30 May 2005 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, there is still an admin function, but it will be in a different office and, shall we say, more streamlined, and all the other stuff I do will be divided between my colleagues.

I am also the deputy manager of my office, a role created specially for me, but this new structure doesn't involve that position either. I was off sick when the factfinding stuff was done by the people that make the decisions so don't really know what was said to them about what I do and why they think that it can be done in another office away from my colleagues. Someone will apparently be talking to me and the other admin people in the next few weeks to find out how best to organise it, but I'm not wholly optimistic that the role they envisage is what I want to do.

(thanks nathalie and andrew though)
